A

What to do in the Green Season?

By Donald Willems

A

t this time of year, it rains frequently in Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Outdoor activities at this time are limited. Here are some suggestions of things to do during this Season.

open daily, Tuesday thru Sunday, from 7am till 4pm, closed on Mondays. Raining outside? Workout is one option. Take a taxi to the Gym Mucho Musculo, located just down the last hill before entering Quepos. The gym charges a modest fee of 2000 colones and in open Monday thru Friday, from 6am till 8pm. Saturdays the gym is open until noon, and they are closed on Sundays. Phone: 2777-3400. Work those biceps, crunch those abs, and by all means, don’t forget to firm up those BUNS.

The mornings are mostly beautiful. Try to wake up early so that you can enjoy your outdoor activities during this time of day. A trip to the beach during this time is very pleasant. Walk down the beach near Manuel Antonio Park. Have breakfast at one of the restaurants on the beach. Many of them open at 6am, and have menu selections that range from pancakes to “Gallo Pinto” (the traditional Costa Rican breakfast).

The Bar Mogambo opens everyday 4 to 12 with a happy hour 4 to 6 pm and 9 to 11 pm. They had a nice view to enjoy while having a cocktail and meeting new people. Barba Roja Restaurant has a gay party every Sunday at 4 pm. Liquid Lounge is the discotheque to have a life DJ and goes from 9 pm till 2 am Tuesday to Sunday. The locations of these places are shown on the map in this publication.

On Saturday mornings, (5am till noon), take a trip up to downtown Quepos. They have a wonderful Fruit Market with all the varieties of fruits and vegetables that are grown in Costa Rica at this time of the year. While you are in Quepos, enjoy a traditional Costa Rican style breakfast in the Central Market or stop for some fashion shopping in the locals boutique on the main street of the town.

Want to brush up on your Spanish? Get out of the rain, and get into the classroom. Enroll in the local Spanish schools and you’ll be speaking with the locals in no time.

Take a hike in Manuel Antonio National Park. Even if it a bit rainy, the beauty of this park is quite impressive and is well worth some exploration. The park is

And our favorite indoor activity… We’ll just leave that to your imaginations. n 5

JUST THE FACTS...

By Donald Willems

plant was demolished years ago, but it is still used as a landmark when giving directions. When I am in San Jose, I will often use the Holiday Inn building as my own personal reference point, partly because it is one of the taller buildings and can be seen from all over. Remember, not everyone will know the directions, to you destination. Also, not everyone will be referring to the landmarks you assume. Don’t be afraid to as... and ask often. Many people visit Costa Rica for its natural beauty, and abundant wildlife. Often you will hear that Costa Rica has a higher bio-diversity than any other country. For a country half the size of Kansas, this may be a bit hard to believe. Some countries like Brazil, do contain more species of plants and animals, but Costa Rica leads in bio-diversity. Bio-diversity is decribed as the number of species of bird and mammal life that exist per 10,000 square kilometers. Costa Rica leads with 615 species. Neighboring Panama, has 581 specicies, while the United states averages 108. There are over 10,000 varieties of plant life as well in Costa Rica. More of discovered every year. Of this amount there are 1,400 varieties of trees and 1,200 types of orchids. In addition Costa Rica has more than 35,000 insect species, not all are mosquitoes and ants. There are 160 types of amphibians, and 130 varieties of fresh water fish. And of course there are reptiles, 220 species of which half are snakes. The national parks are the best places to observe the wildlife of Costa Rica. 13% of Costa Rica is national parkland, while 27% of all land is protected in some way. Manuel Antonio park is one of the smaller parks, but also has the highest amount of visitors yearly. n

Getting around Costa Rica and San Jose can be a bit daunting for most travelers. Street names and addresses are seldomly used, or known to local residents. Instead, locations and directions are normally given with the use of local landmarks, and nearby intersections. Hopefully these tips will make your travels a bit easier. In San Jose, and most towns, streets that run east/west are called avenidas. Streets running from north/south are called calles. Downtown San Jose is centered on Avenida Central and Calle Central. Other streets are given numbers in their names. Avenida Central runs east/west thru the center of town. Any street north of this will be oddnumbered, starting with Avenida 1. Any street south of Avenida Central will be evennumbered starting with Avenida 2. Calle Central runs north/south thru the center of town. Any street east of Calle Central will be odd-numbered starting with Calle 1. Likewise, any street west of Calle Central will be even-numbered starting with Calle 2. Distances are also given along with a street or landmark name. A normal city block is usually considered to be 100 meters. However, the number of meters from a landmark is not always literal. If you are told something is 500 meters north, it is generally meant to be about 5 blocks north. Now here’s the tricky part. Landmarks that are used in directions, will often be a park, school, government building, or a local business. There are times when locals will give a different landmark than the one you may expect. A good example is the bus terminal going to Quepos. The locals will usually refer to this as the Coca-Cola bus station, because of the Coca-Cola plant. Ironically, the Coca-Cola
