Acciones

Welcome to The Manuel Antonio Gay Guide
W
e trust you will find us as your travel resource to the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area. Manuel Antonio has been known for the past 40 years, as one of the most gay-friendly places in all of Central America. In this issue you will discover comfortable accommodations, efficient transportation, exciting tours, Spanish school, fantastic restaurants and shopping, relaxing wellness spas and masseurs, as well as bars and hot spots for all to enjoy.
The coast will allow you many adventures. Manuel Antonio beach is just one of many beaches you will find here. It is frequently named one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Unlike most resort locales, which are lined by intrusive hotels, the beaches of Manuel Antonio are bordered by natural rainforest, with an abundance of palm and almond trees reaching out from the edges of the sand, and mountains rising from behind. Facing out to the west you will find many volcanic islands dotting the sea, offering beautiful and interesting additions to your sunset memories and photos.
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most visited in Costa Rica. The park offers beaches, and hiking while you are surrounded by some of the most plentiful and varied plant and animal life anywhere on the planet. In addition to its beauty, Manuel Antonio has some of the best seafood you can find. The tropical fruits are simply fantastic and can’t be beat as a refreshing and healthy snack. If you haven’t seen a particular fruit before, be sure to give it a try. You will never enjoy fruit as juicy and fresh as that which is available here. One of the best resources of the region, is the people that call Manuel Antonio and Quepos home. The locals are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people one can find. Travelers can be found from all points of the globe. Anywhere you go, you will enjoy the company and tales of the person sitting next to you. Whichever manner you choose to enjoy your stay in Manuel Antonio and Quepos, you will truly learn the meaning of PURA VIDA.

Here’s the Adventure
I

n Manuel Antonio every day is an adventure. You have many fantastic tours to choose from. Take a different tour each day, or fill your day with a choice of 2 tours. Here are some recommendations from the experts. Gaytours offers a schedule of tours for the LGBT community; check it out on page 16. All tours include transportation to and from your hotel. Damas Island Mangrove Tour. You will be transported from you hotel to a typical costarican home where you will board a boat or a Kayak (your choice) and float between the Pacific Ocean and Paquita River estuary, among the mangroves, along Damas Island. This location has 4 different classes of mangrove trees, abundant wild life and is one of the most important parts of the biodiversity. Hiking in Manuel Antonio Park. On this 2 ½ hour walk, your guide will point out animals such as monkeys, sloths, birds, bats, lizards, frogs, snakes, and insect life. Using a high powered telescope, you will be able to see things that the casual visitor often misses. You will also learn about the unique habitat, vegetation, and animal behavior in one of Costa Rica’s most treasured national resources. Sunset Sails Tour. This is a wonderful boat trip along the scenic coast, beautiful beaches and islands of Manuel Antonio National Park. We will then anchor at a protected cove where we can go swimming and snorkeling, eat a delicious meal, and admire some of the most spectacular sunsets on the Pacific coast. Drinks and food are included, along with the sounds of our favorite music. Canopy Tour. The tour begins with a nice lunch, you a given safety instructions and you suit up. To start everyone gets in a truck and goes up a mountain to the first of the zip lines. The tour includes: 10 lines and 15 platforms, 2 rappel lines and a treetop suspension bridge. For an additional $40 a Super “Mono” rail, where you can fly like Superman on Central America’s longest line. Horseback Riding Tour. To start you will receive riding instructions and safety tips, and will be paired up with a beautiful and strong horse. Then you will head out to explore the rain forest and the ride will take you through the mountains. At the end of the trail you will find a wonderful waterfall, where you will be able to rest for about 30 minutes. You can lounge on the grass or take a swim. To end the tour you will be served a delicious lunch made with local ingredients. White Water Rafting. Upon arriving at the departure point, you will receive a safety talk before getting into the river. The tour is approximately 2 ½ hours in the raft where you will tame the rapids, taking occasional pit stops to rest and admire some of the region’s beautiful flora and fauna. Your drive back to base camp will be much shorter, where you can change your clothes and savor a delicious homemade meal. Tres Niñas Boat Rental. This is a great option to watch the coast line and have a private tour with your boyfriend or group of friends. They have 3 boats with GPS that you can drive yourself, or hire a Captain. You can bring your own drinks and food or order from them all the service. The boats hold 1 to 8 people for the same price. 21
Manuel Antonio Park
D
by Don Willems
eclared as a National Park in 1972, a definite must see for those visiting Costa Rica. While one of the smallest parks in the country, it is one of the most visited. In 2011, Forbes Magazine listed this park as one of the 12 most beautiful national parks in the world. It contains several hiking trails to enjoy both flora and fauna. Your hike will take you through a tropical forest with lush foliage, from the beaches up thru the lava stone cliffs. Including several scenic overlooks of the pacific ocean and the 12 islands which border the park. Within the park are 4 different sandy beaches, each with its own personality. The forest grows right up to the beaches, with coconut palms and almond trees provide shady cover from the hot sun. Swimming, sea kayaking and snorkeling are also a fun way to create memories of your visit. To walk Manuel Antonio Park will give one a broad experience of the vast biodiversity of which Costa Rica is proudly known for. The park boasts of having 109 species of mammals, and 184 of birds. A large assortment of reptiles, insects and bats also make the park their home. 3 of the 4 types of monkeys in Costa Rica are found here. They are the Mono Congo, or howler monkeys, the Cara Blanca or white faced monkeys, and the Mono Titi, also known as squirrel monkeys. Large groups of these monkeys are seen throughout the park. The Mono Congo are a bit harder to find of
the 3 but their howls can be heard from very long distances. Many of the animals found are currently considered as endangered. The ocean also contains a varied assortment of wildlife such as dolphins, flying fish, manta rays and turtles. The islands along the coast of the park are also protected as breeding sanctuaries for many types of birds, like the brown pelican. Although Manuel Antonio is not their home, whales migrate through the area and can be seen at different times throughout the year. The park is open year round and is equally enjoyable in both the “dry” as well as “wet” seasons. The area averages 151 inches of rainfall each year. The driest time is during January, February and March. The wet season is at its height in August through October. Average temperature ranges from 81F - 86F (27-30 C). Entry to the park is $16 per person. If this is your first visit to the park it is advisable to ask to be accompanied by a guide. Guides are $55 per person, and this includes transportation back and forward as well as the entrance fee. A good guide will have a spotting scope for up close viewing of the wildlife, and will have an extensive knowledge to share with you. Ask at the front desk of your hotel and they will gladly recommend a trusted guide for you. The park is open daily from 7am-4pm, and is closed on Mondays. It is advisable to bring sun block, your bathing suits, and wear sturdy shoes. 22

Weddings W
e believe that everyone in love deserves a special day to commit their love to friends and family. Besides being in the most beautiful country in the world, part of that beauty is the acceptance of all lifestyles, choices, creeds and national origin. Costa Rica’s attitude towards love and commitment is our small part to make the world a better place and to escape places that have not yet
grasped our secret to happiness. LGBT weddings are a celebration of everyone’s life, beliefs and a way to share those values. Our beach and waterfall weddings, mountain top weddings, even ziplining weddings are an example to the rest of the world that love is everywhere, and by utilizing the backdrop beauty of Costa Rica from every angle, we can celebrate your love to the heavens.
A Wedding in Paradise should not be a cookie cutter affair and therefore cannot be priced a la carte. Our celebrations are as individual and unique as the happy wedding couple. Helping you celebrate your love and life can be as tradtional and affordable as you desire OR AS FLAMBOUANT AND EXORBITANT FOR WHICH THE OCCASION SCREAMS!!!!!! Just tell us what you want, show up and enjoy!

Why Visit, Invest and Live in Costa Rica?
T
By Tim Salladay.
he short answer is: Because it is Costa Rica! The more detailed response is the same answer to all three questions? Here is why Gay folk are coming.
The landscape and coastlines are breathtaking. The wildlife is amazing and the air is delicious. The nation has a long history of prioritizing peace amongst its neighbors . They abolished the military in 1948, and spend most resources on infrastructure, healthcare (which is really good), and education. Go figure.
Life and activities. Just browse some of the ads in this booklet. Also, check out my blog, “Gay Life In Costa Rica.” You can get there through the website: www.gayrealestatecostarica.com There are gay areas popping up in almost all regions. Gay owned hotels, restaurants, bars, resorts, yoga retreats, etc. In my town, Manuel Antonio, gay folk put us on the map and built a wonderful environment for people like us to come, retire and contribute. Gay tourism is a strong focus, so we are always making new friends. Here we have a strong gay community that is growing. There is even legislative talk of gay marriage as the Pope despairs.
The climate is varied and pleasant.
The people are beautiful.
The country is peace-loving, eco-minded, and tolerant.
With so many micro-climates, the entire country offers a tropical, predictable climate wherever you choose. Some parts are drier and some wetter. The mountainous terrain lends to such geographic and topographic diversity that it is almost overwhelming. Sorry, no snow or ice… EVER! The investment is a solid one. Whether you are just coming on vacation (the first time), or whether you have your eye on that perfect retirement spot, you will discover it is money well spent. Property values and tourist options have experienced minimal distress common to the global slowdown. We are already seeing stronger activity in just 12 months. The cost of living is a bit less and the property taxes are much lower. Gay Life is thriving. San Jose, the capital city, is bustling with Gay
Inside and out, the Costa Ricans are lovely. The population is warm, jovial, affable, and relaxed. The “Pura Vida” approach is contagious. You will find the country and individuals welcoming to all. The process is simple. Travel to CR is getting easier all the time. Purchasing property is easier than in the States. While some aspects of buying are occasionally different, there are laws and regulations designed to protect and secure your investments. You have many resources at your disposal. Let us help you. Start your adventure by using our website: www. gayrealestatecostarica.com . This is your one-stop shop for touring or relocating. You can also reach us on our facebook page: Gay Real Estate Costa Rica. Y’all come! 26
