¡A Grito Pelado!

TAMAL FEST 2010 LA TAMALEADA

Por Jose Chaves

¡A Divertirnos, Gente!

C

Además, Gaytours cambia en su horario regular de tours los Martes con Hiking in the park with Estelle y los Domingos el nuevo Villa Vanilla Spice plantation tour and fla- vors of the world tasting. Q

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas in Costa Rica without the traditional dish Tamale. Come and enjoy a night of friendship, eating, drinking and fun.

7 reasons NOT to feed the monkeys

RX PLJKW ¿QG IHHGLQJ WKH monkeys (and other wild animals) to be a thrilling experience, you are not doing the monkeys a favor. In fact, you are actually harming them. Here's why:

containing pesticides, can be upsetting to the monkeys' delicate digestive system and cause serious dental problems that can lead to eventual death. 5. Feeding creates a dangerous dependency on humans that diminishes the monkeys' survival abilities.

1. Monkeys are highly susceptible to diseases from human hands. They can die from bacteria transferred off your hand that has no ill effect on you.

6. Feeding interferes with the monkeys' natural habits and upsets the balance of their lifestyle centered on eating wild fruits, seeds, small animals and insects.

2. Migration to human-populated areas to be fed increases the risk of dog attacks and road accidents.

7. Contact with humans facilitates poaching and the trade in illegal wildlife. Q

3. Irregular feeding leads to an aggressive behavior towards humans and other species. 4. Contrary to the stereotype, bananas are not preferred food of monkeys in the wild. Bananas, specially those 4

The  righteous  hustle

I Â

just  returned  to  Manuel  Antonio  after  a  short  vacation  in  the  United  States.  Like  all  good  trips  it  got  me  thinking...thinking  about  the  parallels  between  Manuel  Antonio’s  growth  and  globalization  as  a  whole.  At  times  I  feel  like  I  am  caught  in  a  time  warp.  Surely  I  can’t  be  the  only  one,  can  I?  I  feel  bombarded  by  advertise- ments,  big  money,  and  American  culture  seeping  into  this  tiny  jungle  town.  I  have  never  believed  that  the  biggest  and  newest  equates  to  the  best  in  quality.  Local  word  of  mouth  has  always  been  P\ JR WR P\ DFH LQ WKH KROH ZKHUH , ÂżQG P\ best  meals  and  best  experiences.  There  seems  to  be  more  depth  and  cultural  verisimilitude  when  one  experiences  the  authenticity  of  a  business  run  with  love  and  passion  rather  than  greed  and  envy.  Real  estate  and  big  development  is  a  part  of  life  but  I  also  know  what  brings  tourism  into  Manuel  Antonio....  it  is  not  condo  towers,  pollution,  traf- ÂżF DQG D ZKLWH ZDVKLQJ RI VHUYLFHV WR SURYLGH DQ assembly  line  instead  of  an  unique  experience.  Consumers  must  be  aware  that  big  and  bold  does  not  necessarily  mean  better,  especially  here  in  a  developing  nation  on  the  fast  track  to  perhaps  be- coming  just  another  tourist  destination. Â

city  truly  renewed  instead  of  taxed,  in  more  ways  than  one. In  my  ultimate  dream  Manuel  Antonio  would  become  a  Utopia,  without  walls  and  security  bars  blocking  the  best  views.  People  would  earn  their  living  out  of  love  of  their  craft  creating  a  healthy  give  and  take,  as  well  as  a  solid  community.  In  my  altered  reality  I  would  love  to  see  the  beach  a  place  of  neutrality,  exempt  from  the  hustle.  What  I  imagined  when  I  moved  here  was  a  place  where  we  all  have  the  time  to  talk  on  the  street,  to  sit  and  to  laugh,  to  blow  off  the  rest  of  the  day,  be- cause  the  â€œright  nowâ€?  is  more  important.  A  place  where  visitors  can  let  their  hair  down,  explore  themselves,  minus  the  problems  they  may  have  at  home.  There  is  a  richness  and  quality  in  this  community,  I  hope  we  do  not  lose  this  gift  with  the  inundation  of  â€œbigger  and  betterâ€?.  Some  say  I’m  a  dreamer,  but  I’m  not  the  only  one.  Q

“The local that works on locals

It  is  my  opinion  after  eleven  years  of  living  in  Manuel  Antonio  the  best  products,  the  ultimate  experiences,  and  the  bloodline  of  Costa  Rica,  are  preserved  by  the  families  born  here  and  the  jet- setting  expats  who  sought  out  for  themselves  a  new  dream.   I  adamantly  want  people  who  come  here  to  experience  that  side  of  Costa  Rica  and  not  to  be  swayed  by  giant  billboards  and  all  inclu- sive  resorts.  For  the  weary  and  wise  the  reason  to  live  in  a  place  like  Manuel  Antonio  is  not  solely  for  the  rate  of  return.  We  know  when  something  seems  too  good  to  be  true  it  often  is.  IInternet  has  replaced  conversations  and  one  on  one  time,  we  all  must  be  careful  on  what  we  do  and  where  we  put  our  money.  There  are  still  so  many  wonderful  spots  to  explore,  all  you  need  to  do  is  get  to  know  a  friendly  local  and  have  the  time  to  share.  Try  to  sink  into  the  jungle  vibe  and  return  to  your  home Â

as  its  competitor,  and  Raphaels  Terezzas  of- fers  not  only  a  sunset  happy  hour  but  also  a  pre-party  happy  hour  to  Liquid  and  Tutus.  Barba  Roja  also  offers  Sunday  tea  parties  and  Salsipuedes  has  Monday  movie  nights.  As  I  get  older,  it  is  nice  to  see  options  open  that  allow  not  only  late  night  partying,  but  also  afternoon  and  early  evening  lounge  ex- periences  as  well.

The  number  of  hotels  has  exploded  in  the  past  15  years,  as  have  the  restaurants.  There  are  now  many  fantastic  choices  for  dining,  enjoying  the  sunset,  or  relaxing  over  a  drink.  Regardless  of  the  venue,  Manuel  Antonio  is  one  spot  in  Central  America  where  you  can  be  yourself.

Of  course  Gaytours  is  a  stable  in  Manuel  Antonio,  and  continues  to  offer  many  differ- ent  choices  for  tours  of  a  wide  variety.  It  is  wonderful  to  be  able  to  take  a  tour  with  new  Manuel  Antonio  â€œfamilyâ€?  members.  As  the  area  continues  to  have  gay  and  lesbian  trav- ellers,  I  have  noticed  more  gay  groups  com- ing  here  to  enjoy  this  destination.

Casa  Bosque  Verde’s  street,  which  has  sometimes  been  referred  to  as  Castro  Street,  has  a  number  rental  and  other  properties  which  have  gay  owners  and  operators.  Many  other  houses  in  the  area  have  gay  owners,  and  there  continues  to  be  choices  among  ho- tels  for  gay  and  lesbian  travelers.  Although  Villa  Roca  and  Casa  Blanca  are  most  exclu- sive  to  the  gay  market,  other  choices  such  as  Gaia  will  ensure  the  gay  traveler  is  well  accommodated.  As  things  change  in  Manuel  Antonio,  the  local  market  continues  to  cater  to  its  historical  roots  of  the  gay  and  lesbian  traveler,  and  the  people  in  Manuel’s  Castro  area  continue  to  be  friendly  and  welcoming  and  understand  their  importance  to  the  local  ecomony.

The  gay  travel  industry  is  also  important  to  the  local  economy.  The  local  people  here  and  local  business  owners  here  know  this  important  fact  and  have  not  forgotten  their  roots.  Manuel  Antonio  continues  to  act  as  an  example  how  important  the  gay  and  lesbian  travel  industry  can  be  in  both  starting  and  maintaining  a  tourist  destination. So  as  tourism  here  evolves,  the  options  for  the  gay  traveler  seem  to  be  increasing  in  Manuel  Antonio.  Yes,  it  is  different  than  15  years  ago,  but  Manuel  Antonio  still  remains  an  important  gay  destination.  As  you  holiday  here,  you  will  experience  how  not  only  how  Manuel  Antonio  serves  the  gay  and  lesbian  travelers  well,  but  also  how  important  this  market  is  to  the  area.  Q
