The First professional male massage therapist in Manuel Antonio

* Playita is the name given by locals to one of the beaches in Manuel Antonio which attracts a high concentration of gay and lesbians from Costa Rica and visitors from all over the world. This beach is accessible just two hours before and after high tide.
Pongámonos la mano en el corazón y pensemos por un momento no solo en nosotros sino en la gente que nos rodea. Pidamos y exijamos pero también donemos y regalemos. Y más importante que todo, trabajemos en cambiar este feo estereotipo. n

“It took us a few extra months to get our place open due to some of the challenges to find the authentic ingredients for our recipes” says co-owner Bill Briggs. Evidently, the brothers actually had to bring in several seeds and plantings and work directly with local farmers to grow such ingredients as Thai basil, kefir lime & galangal root essential to Thai cooking.
Dragonfly Restaurant
Check out customers comments and pictures of their restaurant on TripAdvisor where in their first month they have soared to the top and currently rank 4th in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio marketplace. They offer a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere with spectacular ocean views. Authentic Thai ingredients, fresh local produce, choice seafood & meats. It’s a beautiful combination you won’t taste anywhere else in Costa Rica! n

Owners Bill & Josh Briggs decided to bring Thai cuisine to Costa Rica after vacationing here for over 10 years and always leaving with same thoughts about the restaurant experience. “Too much rice & beans & too over priced!” Over the past 25 years, the brothers have spent considerable time in Thailand including Josh choosing to live and marry there for several years. These life experiences are woven into the restaurant’s recipes and authentic Thai antique décor. The restaurant’s bar is actually flanked by large Buddhists temple doors that are almost 500 years old!

A Modest Approach to Life By Tim Dwyer
O
ur lives can change on a dime. I broke my leg this summer in an accident. One second I was fine and the next, I was lying on the sidewalk, my leg facing downtown and my foot heading uptown. Ouch! That forced me to change and accept change in a very radical manner. For eight weeks I was in bed, on crutches, using a walker, hobbling with a cane and now on my own power again. Five months later I am still experiencing some difficulty with swelling, and soreness and I limp a bit first thing in the morning till things get warmed up. Some have asked if the full moon or coming rain affects how it feels. Damned if I know. It´s all too new and I haven’t been able to see any pattern so far. (I have to admit though I was disappointed when the combination of plate, pins, screws, pull-tabs and twist ties holding my leg together didn´t set off the airport metal detector.)
it take me where I want to go. The more I go through life the more I realize that there are no right and wrong answers. There are only those choices we make which we can later on judge to be good ones or not so good. If I have learned something, then it was a good choice regardless of the outcome. There are lots of changes in the world today that have come about as a result of economic insecurity, political strife and natural disasters, and there are personal event too that affect us: a change in relationships, a death or a move. With each, I have the opportunity to use these events and the ripples that reach me in my life to continue to grow...as difficult as it may be at the time to pass through these events I always have a choice. So will it be “Carpe Diem”.... seize the day or ”Carpet Canem”...hide under the matt like a dog? You decide. n
Tips about Playita* * This is the name of one of the beaches in Manuel Antonio, which attracts a high concentration of gay people, from the area and visitors to Costa Rica.
REMEMBER Don’t bring valuables to the beach, you will not need them. If you do swim, or walk, ask someone you know to watch your things. DON’T FORGET Sunblock... Sunblock... Sunblock... The sun is much stronger than you think. PLEASE Take care about the tide, you can cross the rocks 2 hours before and/or 2 hours after the high tide (page 7), otherwise you may get hurt. Rocks are very dangerous in high tide period. YOU MUST Dress in a bathing suit. Nude bathing is restricted on the beaches. Police do patrol the beaches. BORED? Walk to the end of the beach and climb a bit to the end of the rocks and get a fantastic view… of the coast, wear good shoes and have fun. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY... Don’t get sand in your ...OUCH!
Change is inevitable. Some say that change is the only thing that is certain to remain constant. Here in the tropical rainforest we can note the changes in a very fast. You put in a road and the rains of the season wash it away. You plant a tree a little too close to your house and suddenly you have to prune it or move it because it has grown so much bigger than you could have ever imagined in such a short time. I can’t control the change itself, but I can, however, control how I react to it. As the saying goes, you can´t adjust the wind, but you can direct your sails. I have a choice. I can sit back and curse the wind for not blowing where I want, or I can do something about it. For me, wisdom exists in knowing from experience and learning when to let the wind take me where it wants to go and when to make 14

A Helping Hand
By Don Willems
We have the luxury of having the time and the means to escape our own problems, to relax and recoup. Some of us do not. I am especially referring to those of us that suffer from HIV/ AIDS. Many will remember the natural beauty of Costa Rica. As in the United States, and other countries, many Costa Ricans, Ticos, also suffer from this illness and are often shunned, avoided, and forgotten about. Many are homeless. I had the experience, along with Rick Kendle and others, to visit a home in San Jose, which exists for those who currently suffer from HIV/ AIDS. The home is called HOGAR NUESTRA SENORA DEL CARMEN and has been in existence for a number of years. It houses up to 24 people with HIV/AIDS. These people not only live here, they care for, support and rely on each other. The home is funded solely through private donations.

any of us take things for granted, day by day, in our lives. What we can’t forget, no matter where we go, is that there are always others in need. Whether it be monetarily, by lending a hand, and ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or simply to give a hug. We all find ourselves in need at some point in our lives. While you enjoy your visit here in Costa Rica, take a moment to think about those around you, those that are less fortunate.
Enjoy your Costa Rican vacations, but please take a moment to think about others in our community who are in need of our attention and assistance.
For many years now, way we have seen others in and out of the gay community that are in need of our assistance and guidance. For some it is during the time we finally come to terms with ourselves and stand up, and step out of the closet. For many others it is during the loss of a close friend or at a time of a serious illness of our own. In the gay community, all of us at some point or another “come out” to our friends and family. Often times, this a terrible experience, but it is one that we all share to some degree.
Whether it be by food, clothing, hygienic items, household goods, or monetary donations, YOU can help. YOU can make a difference. To show your support please contact Rick Kendle at 8696-9957 or by calling 22202287. Ask for Mario or Alberto. They will gladly accept any assistance you can provide. Facebook page: Hogar Nuestra Senora del Carmen.
The gay community also shares another major difficulty, this is the tragedy of HIV/AIDS. Sooner or later it affects us all, personally, through a family member, or friend. Many in this situation find themselves alone, further cast off from family and friends, and with an inability to work and provide for oneself.
Gaytours is also sponsoring Drag Lottery Night, Monday March 18, at 8pm, at Salsipuedes Restaurant, in Manuel Antonio. Join us for a night of fun and also to raise money for this worthy cause. Thank You, Pura Vida! n
I mention this, because, we should reminded of how fortunate we are. 17
