CPL

Gays Lead the Pack

between how gay and straight people use or acquire new technology. If you wanted to watch cable, for instance, you’d have more luck finding a cable box at a gay person’s home. More than twothirds of gay households. Gay people may also stay slightly better connected than their straight counterparts - at least when it comes to cell phones. Eight in 10 gay people, or 79 percent, have cellular service, as compared with 72 percent of straight people. The survey also showed slightly more gay people pick their cell phones and cell phone plans according to their friends’ and family’s advice. While showing the difference between the two communities, the survey also suggests that such market information is important for companies to know if they want to attract more gay customers.

“It’s no secret that the cellular market is becoming increasingly saturated, and this data can help marketers distinguish between GLB and heterosexual consumers’ use and purchase considerations,” Jake Stafford, senior marketing strategist at Witeck-Combs, said in the firm’s press release. “The research also suggests that as gays continue to embrace emerging technologies such as HDTV, there is room for innovations that would continue to spur the buying preferences of trendsetting gay customers.” n
rend-setters once more, gay people are slightly ahead of the curve when it comes to using technology, particularly when it comes to communications, a new online survey reveals. Harris Interactive, in conjunction with Witeck-Combs Communications, a strategic public relations and marketing firm that focuses on the gay market, conducted an online survey of technology usage and found some real differences 5

Tips about Playita*
Cosas sobre Playita*

* Este es el nombre de una de las playas en Manuel Antonio que atrae una alta concentración de gays turistas y locales.
REMEMBER Don't bring valuables to the beach, you will not need them. If you do swim, or walk, ask someone you know to watch your things. DON'T FORGET Sunblock... Sunblock... Sunblock... The sun is much stronger than you think. PLEASE Take care about the tide, you can cross the rocks 2 hours before and/or 2 hours after the high tide (page 6), otherwise you may get hurt. Rocks are very dangerous in high tide period. YOU MUST Dress in a bathing suit. Nude bathing is restricted on the beaches. Police do patrol the beaches. BORED? Walk to the end of the beach and climb a bit to the end of the rocks and get a fantastic view… of the coast, wear good shoes and have fun. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY... Don't get sand in your ...OUCH!
Ouch!!!

eturning to old sources of knowledge can be extremely rewarding. Also rewarding is the sense of pure freedom that comes with authentic travel. This is exactly why time is the truest form of wealth any of us can have. On a whole, the more time one has, the greater the adventure. Committing to this philosophy and changing it into a style of living, a way of existing, is not for everybody. In reality, it is actually lived by a vast minority. If one can attain this state of being, it often attracts prosecution and dissidence by those who feel the need to judge by their own set of values. I see Manuel Antonio these days, in a similar circumstance - and with a great divide. Natural geographic beauty and an accepting community have brought the spotlight to Manuel Antonio’s present stage. In the audience, watching the show, are all types of men and women. Some of these people value the Manuel Antonio show for what it is, why it is, and feel that they are part of the whole. They would even like to add more of the same positivity, to meld their future intentions organically. There are other audience members that immediately search for ways to exploit for personal gain and selfishness. Their vision rarely has any thoughts on the community and exists for the sake of themselves and their investors.

is more beauty here now, or when they arrived ten years ago, is a good gage. If wealth is defined by having ample available time, I feel most of us are not as wealthy as when we first arrived. I think it is important, no matter who you are in the audience, to not forget where we came from, and what got us here. I am simply saying that the magic of Manuel Antonio is evolving, and we should be very cautious with that. When a small group of people and total outsiders can scar a once ideal location, there comes a time to question, to regress, and to take a stand. Beauty can never be enhanced by the discovery of it. When adventure is removed in the name of comfort, money, and security, so is freedom. Manuel Antonio attracted all of us for different reasons, yet we all share one thing in common - the community. No matter how you arrived, we all must be aware of the snakes, because if a poison snake bites you, you’re poison too. n

Old sources of knowledge show that visitors come for authenticity. The sense of freedom is gained when a bit of inconvenience, insecurity, and “going out on a limb” is a necessity, not an option. Often with growth comes a feeling of ‘white-washing’ the area, by making it similar to where the investment money is coming from. This is complicated and confusing for every expatriot. Is the sales pitch to get people here to privatize, exclude, and segregate, by drastically changing the environment and vibration in this sensitive community? Or should the sales pitch (admittedly less powerful and marketable) to spread wealth in a different manner? A manner that is authentic to what most of us fell in love with when we first arrived. A Food Trip
A
re you excited to be in this beautiful land? Everything is different. Everything you see is new, fascinating, and intimidating at the same time. You´ve had a long day. You´ve come a long way. You´ve dealt with the airlines, passed through customs, and you have found your way to your hotel, despite the confusion. You are on vacation. Now is your time to relax and enjoy. Are you ready to explore Manuel Antonio, and Quepos? The first thing you want to do is EAT. Where is the Burger King?...Wendy´s?... Taco Bell?.... Surely there must be a McDonald´s on every corner?.... Sorry, but you won´t find any of the fastfood giants here in here. Don´t worry. You will find plenty to eat. Good tasting and also good for you. You may even drop a few pounds during your vacation. If you enjoy seafood, you´ve come to the right place. Seafood is abundant here, and is served in every restaurant, most of which is caught locally, and served the same day. You will find tuna, red snapper, mahi mahi, sea bass and much more. A favorite dish is ceviche. Ceviche is a dish of pickled fish, shrimp or a combination of the two. Great as an afternoon snack on a hot day, or as an appetizer for your evening meal. If you like pickled herring, you will love ceviche. If you happen to be an avid fisherman, venture out for a day on one of the charter boats. Many of the restaurants in Manuel Antonio and Quepos will gladly clean your catch and prepare it for you to your liking. Generally, you will only be charged a small fee per person, or for the side dishes you have along with your own fresh caught fish. In Manuel Antonio, Barba Roja, Mar Luna and Salsipuedes, will gladly do this for you. Call ahead and let them know you are coming. Fruit and vegetables are abundant here in Costa Rica.. The produce grown here is harvested at the peak of ripeness, juicy, and rich in flavor. Many of the items cannot be found in your home towns. Take advantage of what is available here. Be adventurous.

If you have some free time on a Friday evening, or Saturday morning check out the fresh market in Quepos, La Feria. Local farmers bring their freshest produce each week. Did you know there is more than on type of banana? Have you had a white pineapple before? No, then what are you waiting for? I highly recommend you give them a try. You will also find juicy mangos and papaya. Some of the fruits you may not be familiar with. Many will look strange to you. Don´t be afraid. Taste a tangy star fruit, kiwi, or if in season, mamone chino. They are a little strange looking, like a big red burr, that sticks to your pant leg when you walk through the woods. Peel the skin and find a juicy fruit inside, similar to a green grape. If you are feeling thirsty, taste a pipa. Pipa is coconut water, served right in the coconut. The merchant will grab his machete, open the coconut for you and hand you a straw. Tasty, refreshing, and very healthy. If you should walk to one of the beaches you will likely find many coconuts along the way. Pick a few up and take them with you. If you dont have a machete with you, you can open them by hitting them against a rock or tree. There are several types of plantain also. Plantain is a cousin to the banana. The are served often is soup, or fried for a tasty desert, alone or served with ice cream. Plantain can also be sliced, fried, and salted to be served as a snack like potato chips. As for vegetables, make your own guacamole with some fresh avocados or try them sliced with a little salt and pepper. If you like potatoes, Chayote is often used in many dishes. Are you a french fry fanatic, substitute the potatoes with fried Yuca. Another way to enjoy Yuca is to have a local dish called enyucado. This is a mashed yucca mixed with meat, and fried. Similar to hush puppies in the United States, they make a great snack between meals. The feria is held in downtown Quepos along the shoreline. You will surely find something to enjoy here. If you are unfamiliar with a type of fruit, the merchants will gladly cut you a fresh sample to taste. Provecho and Pura Vida!!! n
