“On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind. As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind.” -Dan Lipinski
part 01 project introduction
PROJECT
OVERVIEW
Design an all-encompassing veterans center in which veterans can feel comfortable and accomplish numerous appointments, activities, and recreation types under one roof.
P R O B L E M S TAT E M E N T Veteran support facilities are scattered and disorganized. U.S. veterans are in need of a universally-designed facility that provides support in all areas, such as: mental health and addiction counseling, physical fitness, childcare, transition services, and communal areas that foster a sense of camaraderie.
SOLUTION Design a facility with maximum inclusivity in mind, in which all services are in close proximity to each other to allow for easy accessibility.
GOALS universal design — easy accessibility — all-encompassing — foster camaraderie — ease anxiety — provide support tools — honor veterans
04
In 2008, the number of veterans with any type of disability was
5.5 MILLION
903, 806 veterans were using VA education beneďŹ ts as of 2018.
part 01 research
47.1% of veterans were age 65 or older as of Ocotber 2019
As of September 2019, the number of active VA home loan participants was
3.27 MILLION
RESEARCH
Universal Design design is useful and marketable to people of diverse abilities accomodates a wide range of preferences and abilities communicates necessary information effectively to users minimizes hazards and adverse consequences of accidental actions design can be used efďŹ ciently and comfortably with minimum fatigue appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use
06
1 IN 12 MALES 1 IN 200 FEMALES in the US are affected by color blindness
part 01 research
Visual Impairment/Color Blindness good contrast between materials aids the colorblind never use color alone to convey information (include text and graphics) design with texture. sound, heat, and smell to deďŹ ne spaces and functions tactile cues, such as differences in oor textures, provide landmarks bright colors, wall murals, and illumination changes help those with limited vision entryways and vestibules help eyes adapt to illumination changes by sticking with a small set of colors distinguishing contrast can be shown by changing the saturation, hue, or brightness
08
138, 197 formerly deployed veterans reported incidents of PTSD as of June 2015
part 01 research pg 09
PTSD increasing natural daylight increases serotonin levels plants and greenery limit the effects of PTSD by providing oxygen (can remove up tp 87% of air toxins in 24 hours) removing visual clutter decreases mental clutter lighter paint colors help light to bounce around room avoid colors and objects that simulate battlegrounds placing seating arrangements against walls or perimeter gives PTSD patients an opportunity to survey surroundings
10
96, 519 veterans with major/minor amputations were utilizing VA healthcare in 2019.
part 01 research
Amputation adequate lighting needed to prevent any falls or accidents replace rounded doorknobs with levers area rugs, clutter, and wire can be trip hazards, especially for wheelchair users non-slip mats and hand-held shower heads can make bathing easier

The Veteran’s Center will be located in Norfolk, VA, on the far east side of the state. The site is just south of the Hampton Roads Beltway, one of the major highways throughout the state. It is in close proximity to Naval Station Norfolk, one of the largest military bases in the entire world. This speciďŹ c site is central to 18 military installations out of the 27 in the state, as shown on the map below. It provides beautiful views of the ocean on the north, east, and west sides of the building. new building

CONCEPT
Water is a force to be reckoned with, as are all branches of the military. Water is required for all life forms and can literally shape space and landscape by erosion. The calmness and uidity of water can be experienced by anyone anywhere and it is highly cohesive. Water is constantly freely-owing and will forever remain an essential part of life.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Space Overview The Veterans center and its amenities fully incorporate timeless design, as veterans are usually treated for a lifetime. Ample space is provided for connection and interaction, in hopes that sharing stories can help heal emotional wounds. The flexible furniture throughout the space ensures that all veterans, even those in wheelchairs, will be able to join in seating arrangements and conversations. Simplified wayfinding will help put veterans at ease and encourage them to want to revisit the establishment.

RENDERINGS
The renderings included show four of the major areas in the space — the atrium, the cafe, the lounge, and the gymnasium. The atrium is three stories tall and incorporates a glass water feature. The cafe is centrally located and provides views into the atrium and pool areas. The lounge incorporates a mixture of private and public spaces. The room encourages connections between people and has enough flexibility to be converted for different uses. The gymnasium provides users with a space to relieve energy, but also serves as a training area for the physical therapy floor above.

THANK YOU As a military veteran, this project is very near and dear to my heart. I believe that all veterans — of all ages, ethnicities, and abilities — deserve to be treated with honor and respect, and I believe places such as these can begin to show them that.
