HISTOR Y OF EQUESTRI AN S PO R T S
EVENTING EVOLVED FROM EQUESTRIAN WORK DONE IN THE EUROPEAN CALVARY. HORSES WERE ORIGINALLY BRED TO TRAVEL LONG DISTANCES AND OVERCOME THE NATURAL LANDSCAPES. WHEN PEOPLE BEGAN TO DISCOVER THE HORSES ATHLETICISM, SOON, CROSS-COUNTRY COMPETITIONS BEGAN ALL OVER EUROPE. WITH GAINING POPULARITY, THE LESS PRESTIGIOUS EVENTS SUCH AS DRESSAGE AND SHOW JUMPING.

THE EQUESTRIAN SPORT FEATURED ON THE OLYMPIC PROGRAM FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE GAMES OF THE II OLYMPIAD IN PARIS IN 1900. IT WAS THEN LEFT OUT OF THE PROGRAM AND THEN BROUGHT BACK AGAIN IN 1902. SINCE THEN, THE SPORT HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE PROGRAM. ONLY MEN WERE ALLOWED TO COMPETE IN THE EVENTS UNTIL 1948, BECAUSE THE MEN HAD TO BE OFFICERS. IN 1952, AT THE GAMES OF THE XV OLYMPIAD, WOMEN JOINED THE COMPETITION IN MIXED EVENTS.

THE HARMONY BETWEEN A HORSE AND ITS RIDER.
THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER IS TO PROVIDE THE LEVEL OF CARE EVERY DISCERNING HORSE OWNER WOULD LIKE TO FURNISH AT HOME, BUT MAY NOT HAVE THE LAND OR TIME AVAILABILITY TO MEET THESE DEMANDS. FOR A ROUTINE TO BE PERFECT THERE MUST BE HARMONY BETWEEN THE HORSE AND THE RIDER. WHEN BOTH PARTICIPANTS SHARE A CLEAN COMFORTABLE SPACE, THIS HARMONY CAN BE ACHIEVED.

HORSES ARE OFTEN KEPT IN BARNS OR STABLES THAT ARE INTERNALLY DIVIDED INTO INDIVIDUAL STALLS FOR EACH HORSE WHICH PREVENTS THE HORSES FROM INJURING EACH OTHER. A STALL IS TYPICALLY 12’x 12’ THAT HAS ACCESS TO THE CENTER AISLE OF THE BARN AS WELL AS A SECOND ACCESS TO THE OUTDOORS. OUTDOOR ACCESS PROVIDES ADEQUATE VENTILATION AND CAN HELP REDUCE THE STRESS LEVELS OF A HORSE.
