P RO J E C T G OA L Re-purpose the existing floor plan of the Maplewood Early Education Center to design an early education center for ages 3-5. This facility focuses on academic, social growth and cognitive development of the children. All classes are expected to engage in music and art classes as well as Spanish for their development. The classrooms themselves should emphasize the importance of crafting a self image, learning decision making skills, and encourage interaction among peers. The design should also keep in mind the health and safety of the students learning in a post - COVID environment.

Adult vs. Child Social Distancing Guidelines

Concept Statement: Kids wooden toy blocks are designed with simplicity and imagination in mind. By using simple shapes and varying sizes kids are able to use the blocks to create complex worlds built from their own imagination. Toys in general teach kids many different things and help them grow and develop and these blocks allow kids to grown in their own imagination and explore and create anything they want.

To develop the program and design a Micro Apartment Building, using the location of the Cortex in St. Louis. The apartments themselves should be small, no larger than 400 sq. ft. and revolve around shared community spaces. The design of the micro apartments should evoke a sense of comfort, and encourage social interaction, both in the complex as well as in the surrounding community. All units should be designed with accessibility in mind, and the bathrooms, shared kitchens, and community spaces should follow the Fair Housing Act guidelines.

P RO J E C T G OA L

Design a clinic specializing in preventing, diagnosing and treating digestive and liver disorders. The goal of the clinic is to advance the delivery of care for patients suffering from all digestive health conditions. The space should facilitate an increase in efficiency for physicians and create a seamless patient experience through the use of architecture, space planning, and interior design strategies. An overall spa-like feel creating a sense of calmness and wellbeing. The facility should be flexible and allow for growth due to the changing landscape of healthcare from volume-based care to value-based care.

Concept Statement: Meditation gardens are spaces of calm and relaxation meant to take the mind away from the outside world. Bringing in materials like bamboo and stone while using natural colors like green, blue and gray give the idea that the patient is outdoors in a peaceful garden instead of a busy sterile environment.

Typical Exam Room Exam Chair: Lasata by Carolina - Ergonomic arm design - Dual back rest activation levers for easy access - Foot ottoman handle improves patient ergonomics and reduces potential of catching garments - Dual side central locking caster system Guest Chair: Rein by OFS Physicians Stool: Physician Stool by Carolina - Height adjustable - Easy glide and durable casters Technology: - TV: allows for doctor to communicate diagrams, x-rays, care plans and more to the patient and their loved ones - Computer: Computers in every room allow easy access to patient records Cabinets/Desk: Mile Marker by Carolina - Modular furniture to adapt to changing plan Wall covering and paint with dark floors, meant to symbolize the idea of being in a little oasis surrounded by trees or shrubs and a stone wall on one side

CASUALTEAS HOTEL-RESTAURANT-HOSPITALITY

P RO J E C T G OA L Design a two-level, high-end, restaurant space that incorporates both indoor and outdoor seating and highlights the natural beauty of the surrounding woodlands. The goal of this restaurant is to create unparalleled service, extraordinary dining, and an exceptional drinking experience. Forming meaningful relationships with their guests is critical to sustaining the business longterm. The space should also be cohesive and aesthetically pleasing, incorporating elements from the design and process of the Casualteas’ logo designed by fellow classmate Emma McGuire.

Logo design by Emma McGuire

Location: Casualteas is located in Cannon Beach, Oregon, right along the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel has a beautiful view of the surf and the sand. A popular tourist destination, Cannon Beach is known for the rock formation Haystack Rock which was featured in the movie The Goonies.

SOUTHBANK OUTDOOR GATHERING SPACE

P RO J E C T G OA L

To work together as a team to develop a new public entrance and space for the Southbank Centre, London. Our problem, given to us by architect Nathaniel Kolbe of Superfusionlab Architects was to “redefine the connection between the south wall entry facing the Thames and the south bank.” We wanted to bring in a sense of fun and play while giving the community a location to gather and integrate with the beautiful location around them.

Floor plan Study, Public vs Private

PROBLEMS: Many stairways, no clear main entrance, lots of individual spaces, hard to navigate, unclear signage and more

LOCATION: Southbank Centre, London, England A large complex that houses multiple artist venues including the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank of the River Themes. It is a gathering space of creativity, community, art and music.

Preliminary Sketches looking at sensory engagement, lighting, incorporation of water, and bridging the gap between the levels of the Southbank Centre and the levels of the walkway in front of the river.

Detail of integrated lighting on steps

Green wall with integrated lighting

Platform steps act as a place for people to stop and gather. They can sit and watch their kids play in the fountain, have lunch with friends or enjoy the nice weather, without blocking the walkway steps on either side.

Sensory wall with moving wooden blocks

Water flows at different levels and depths down the center of the steps and ends in a fountain at the base for kids to play in
