Maplewood Early Childhood Center puts a focus on the Montessori Method of teaching and learning. The Montessori Method addresses your child’s cognitive, physical, linguistic, social, and emotional development. Researchers have long recognized the many benefits of Montessori, where “learning how to learn” is the best foundation for success. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer ageappropriate activities to guide the process. Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.
Learning Through Play Promotes curiosity, creative play and learning while supporting language development, executive functioning and brain growth.
Embodied Learning Montessori education prescribes learning through doing, involving as many senses as possible to stimulate motor and cognitive development.

A natural play ground is a play environment that consists of elements and textures from the earth such as logs, tree stumps, boulders, and plants. CORTEX MICRO APARTMENTS SPRING 2020 | 10 WEEKS | INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
Technology Used — Revit | Enscape | Photoshop | Illustrator Project Location — 260 Forest Park Ave, Saint Louis, MO Total Square Feet — 17,000sqft
Located in the Cortex District in St. Louis Missouri, micro– apartments are meant to draw in a younger crowed who may not need a whole lot of space. Unlike typical studio flats, they rely on having access to communal kitchens and dining spaces. Typically the units are between 300–400 square feet. These small units allow residents to live a minimalistic lifestyle.
People shape the environment they live in. When designing the space these words were the driving factors: Artistic, Abstract, Sophisticated, Simple, and Lifestyle. This left the space up for the inhabitants to “design”.
CONCEPT
The color pallet while mostly neutral has varieties of peach and orange to create stimulating features.
COLOR
WELL positions building design and operations as agents of public health. WELL is for people. WELL is holistic.

Mental health is a fundamental component of human health across all stages of life and vital for physical and social well-being. The WELL Mind concept promotes mental health through design strategies. In order to support this idea of the WELL Mind and Community a variety of seating areas are provided in the community kitchen so that people have the option to come together with neighbors or be on their own.

This Digestive Health Clinic embraces a biophilic approach to design. Studies have shown that by introducing the living environment into the built environment stress and pain are mitigated, and overall well being is improved. Designed around the basis of natural light, wood, and living plants, the idea is to create positive distractions to promote wellness throughout the facility. Color and texture play a key role in influencing the space.

Grafton Architects in an international architecture studio based in Dublin, Irleand. The studio was co-founded by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara who graduated from the University College Dublin in 1978. Their native Ireland, an island replete with mountains and cliffs, informs their acute sensitivities to geography, changing climates and native in each of their sites. Their buildings consistantly remain purposefully rich, yet modest, enhancing cities and lending to sustainability while responding to local needs. Their practice has won numerous awards for their work. In 2020 Shelley and Yvonne were selected as the Pritzker Prize Laureates, the award that is known internationally as architecture’s highest honour.

FROM GROUND UP
THE HISTORY OF BRASILIA The idea for this interior capital city was proposed in 1789 by Joaquim Jose da Salova Xavier. In 1822, when Brazil gained its independance from Portugal, it was brought back to the light by Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva, and it was embodied in the contitution of 1891. More than 50 yeqars passed, however, before the logistical, political, and economic barriers to such a move could be overcome. Eight years of surveying and testing in the interior preceded the selection of Brasilia’s present site in 1956. After the establishment of an air strip, heavy machinery was flown in, and the construction crews began to carve out city streets, the artifical lake, and the foundations of the principle buildings. Additionally, many thousands of miles of interregional highways were created or extended to link the district with cities in the south. In April 1960 the Square of three powers was dedicated and the federal government began its move from Rio de Janeiro.
The city stood as a symbol to many Brazilians of the future chronic economic growth of the nation. It embodied the national will to overcome chronic economic and social problems through the exploitation of the country’s vast untapped interior; however, the great cost of its construction and the radical nature of its architectre were subjects of intense criticisim. Also concern in subsquent decades was the enivromental damage resulting from expansion of the region’s transportation infrastructure, which greatly facilitated access to the Amazon rainforest to the north.
MONUMENTAL AXIS
The Monumental Axis is a central avenue in Brasilia’s city design. Many important government buildings, monuments and memorials are located here.
SOCIAL
The entertainment social sector is located at the intersection of the Monumental Axis and Residental Sector.
RESIDENTIAL
The curved axis is given the main commuting function with a broad central highway and side roads for local traffic. Main residential areas are located along this road axis.
ORIGINAL BRASILIA PLAN
ARIEL VIEW OF BRASILIA
The plan of the central city has been likened to a bird, a bow an arrow or an airplane. Designed by the Brazilian architect Lucio Costa, its form is emphasized by the Highway Axis, which curves from the north to the southwest and links Brasilia’s main residential neighborhoods, the straight Monumental Axis, which runs northwest-southeast and is lined by federal and civic buildings. At the northwestern end of the Monumental Axis are federal district and municipal buildings, while at the southeastern end, near the middle shore of lake Paranoa, stand executive, judicial, and legislative buildings around the Square of Three Powers, the conceptual heart of the city.

SQUARE OF THREE POWERS
The Square of Three Powers is named after its surroundings being the three governmental powers of Brazil; the Executive, represented by the Presidential Office; the Legislative, represented by the National Congress; and the Judiciary, represented by the Federal Supreme Court. The residential zones of the inner city are arranged into superquadras (super blocks), groups of apartments buildings along with a prescribed number and type of schools, retail stores, and open spaces. Originally, the city planners envisioned extensive public areas along the shores of the artificial lake, but during early development of the area, private clubs, hotels, upscale residences and restaurants gained footholds around the water.
CATHEDRAL OF BRASILIA
The city has been acclaimed for its use of modernist architecture on a grand scale and for its somewhat utopian city plan; however, it has been roundly criticized for much the same reasons. After a visit to Brasília, the French writer Simone de Beauvoir complained that all of its superquadras exuded “the same air of elegant monotony,” and other observers have equated the city’s large open lawns, plazas, and fields to wastelands. As the city has matured, some of these have gained adornments, and many have been improved by landscaping, giving some observers a sense of ‘’humanized’’ spaciousness.

St. Louis–Lyon Sister Cities, Inc. is devoted to enhancing relationships between the citizenry of St. Louis and Lyon. They are one of 16 World Trade Center St. Louis’ sister cities programs that enhance the STLPartnership’s international agenda. Working closely with the client my partner and I found what was important to the organization, the connection between Lyon and St. Louis. To represent the connection in the logo a lions paw was used, representing Lyon, to represent St. Louis, the flag of the city was used on the interior of the paw.
