Brand History The Black Diamond brand began with Yvon Chouinard in 1950’s when he began selling hand forged pitons out of the trunk of his car. Chouinard Equipment Co. was born out of his success, in Ventura CA. Black Diamond was founded December 1, 1989 when remnants of Chouinard Equipment Co. were bought by former employees and investors after its bankrupsty in early 1989. Company moved from Ventura to Salt Lake City, Utah in September 1991 to be closer to climbing and skiing opportunities in the Wasatch Mountains. Black Diamond has grown to include four major groupings of outdoor sports including climbing, snow sports, hiking/trekking and running.

Concept Statement The sun rising over the horizon sets the top of El Capitan ablaze in a an almost abrupt and fiery light contrasting to the cool darkness still sitting in the valley below. The transition from night to day means a new start and opens the world to new opportunities not available before. Opening a new office, with a new location and building, Black Diamond is also creating a fresh start for the brand and its employees. This new office allows them to refocus on their core brand values and create new opportunities for the company and their consumers that allow them to continue to connect with the athletes, employees, and nature.
Problem Statement In a rapidly growing extreme outdoor sports industry that relies heavily on technology and the ability to continue pushing the boundaries of what their products can do for their athletes. There is a lack of connection between its work environment and its core values, products, users and the global community. There is a sense of separation between the workplace and the sport it designs for and its mission for diversity that challenges the brand to continue to grow for the good of its clients.

Location Sacramento is a rapidly growing city with lots to offer for the brand. Weather is pleasant year round with an average range between 30-80 degrees and only a few rainy months in the winter; perfect for climbing. Close by Sacramento, is the national park Yosemite which is home to some of the best climbing and hiking locations in the world. Moving here would allow them to be closer to many of the athletes and consumers they work with making it easier for them to interact and continue to form new partnerships.

Sacramento has also been increasing their commitment to sustainability, thereby encouraging businesses in the city to do the same. As sustainability and corporate responsibility is a huge importance to Black Diamond, being in a city that also promotes these practices would allow them to easily continue their work like outreach programs, education and practices.
