Ex-IGA workers protest unfair dismissal

By Vivian Tyson A small group of axed Graceway IGA Supermarket workers, picketed near the entrance door of the food store this week, protesting what they deemed unfair dismissal. Some of the seven ex-workers, who claimed that they were all terminated on the same day – October 2 - said that their services were terminated without prior warning and little explanation. They said that they were employed at various areas of the food store, including the cold storage, warehouse and on the floor. One of the employees who gave his name as Shamard, and who said he worked for almost three years as a warehouse clerk, said he had a

disagreement with a manager of sister store, Graceway Gourmet, on Saturday (October 11, 2014). He said on Monday (October 13) his boss told his girlfriend via telephone that he would tell him when to return to work. He added at minutes past 11 a.m., his manager did not call, so he called to find out what was the problem, but his boss told him he would call him when it was time for him to come to work. He said the called again later in the day and was told the same thing. He said when he went to work the next day he was invited to a meeting where he was served with a termination letter. He said that after pressing for a reason for his termination, was told that because he had a spat with a manager.

Another employee, Reginald Beckford, who said he had worked at the food store for four years, explained that he was terminated after falling ill the following day after working on his day off, and did not make it to work. He alleged to have forwarded a text message informing of his illness, but realized later that it did not go through. He said that the store did not give him his severance pay, explaining that he was given just one week’s pay. The protestors had secured the representation of Lionel Morley, an International Labor Organisation (ILO) worker advocate who plies his trade across the Caribbean but classified himself as a Belonger of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He accused IGA of breaching the Labour Ordinance, since it did not give the axed workers prior warnings as the law suggested. “You cannot fire anybody under any circumstances unless they go through something that is called due process, that you have to sit down and at least go through to find out their side of the story,” Morley said. “It seems around here that when Mr. Burns or Miss Cox makes a decision based on just what management says, they will take the side of the employer. “Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. We are a nation of law. If we allow this to happen and continue to allow this to happen today, then it means that this vicious cycle will continue to repeat itself where workers

will continue to find themselves out of the door repeatedly and illegally in the long haul.” He added: “I have been here for the last seven years and I hear them say that Turks and Caicos Islanders don’t want to work, that the black culture don’t want to work, all in attempt to do what they wish and to perpetrate a conspiracy against our people. We have put together a steering committee to investigate every property that have been under investigation from last seven years, from this international body, so that we can make a determination on a recommendation on a way forward. When contacted, Edith Cox, Finance Director, Graceway said: “A small protest was staged outside the Graceway IGA store on Tuesday and again today Friday October 17, 2014. The protests were held by individuals who appear to have grievances in relation to recent terminations at the store. We take pride in our staff and make every effort to maintain the quality of our workforce which we do through careful recruitment and training. We also have an excellent record of retention and effective internal processes to deal with Human Resources issues.” She added: “However, there will always be circumstances where terminations may become necessary. The Labour Board is available to review any issue that may arise from these terminations and we remain available to meet with the individuals concerned and the Labour Authorities.”

Don’t go to Ebola countries, Premier warns

Premier Rufus Ewing By Vivian Tyson The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands is beseeching its nationals and other residents not to venture to areas that the deadly Ebola disease is rampant or found, since they would be subjected to the strenuous evaluation regime that would subject them to isolation. The warning came from Premier Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing, during his post cabinet news briefing at the Premier’s Office on Providenciales on Friday (October 10, 2014). The premier said that Ebola, while present in the Turks and Caicos, still present a real threat, which is why persons should take the necessary steps to safeguard themselves from contracting it. It has been widely reported that an epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) is ongoing in parts of West Africa. It began in Guinea in December 2013 then spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. A few much smaller subsidiary outbreaks have occurred elsewhere, with outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal appear to have been successfully contained. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there will be 5,000 to 10,000 new

Ebola cases weekly in West Africa by the first week of December. As of Tuesday (October 14, 2014), there were 8,914 cases and 4,447 deaths, but the WHO said the total is underreported. The mortality rate in the outbreak is 70%, the WHO said. Premier Ewing said that persons traveling from the Turks and Caicos Islands should try to avoid those countries as government does not want anyone to bring it here. “The government has strongly advised against TCI residents traveling to Ebola-infected regions, as this will increase your risk of contracting this disease and the chance of bringing it back home. We also advise persons who have been found to have traveled to Ebola-infected regions and desiring to return to the Turks and Caicos Islands maybe stopped or will be screened or maybe quarantined for a period of 21 days,” the premier asserted. Premier Ewing said that the Turks and Caicos Islands is already building capacity with its regional neighbors to tackle the virus in case it reaches our shores. “Ebola Virus, even though not present in the Turks and Caicos Islands, presents a real and significant threat to our ‘Beautiful by Nature’ islands, hence the Ministry of Health and

Human Services, in addition to collaborating with regional and international organisations, such as CARPHA, Independent Health Organisation, to build intellectuality capacity to respond to distress. “We have implemented several public health measures to address the threat of Ebola Virus disease. The Eboal Virus is not present in the Turks and Caicos, and our first objective is to keep it out,” Premier Ewing said. The premier stated during the news conference that government has buttressed manpower at all its ports of entry in order to better detect the disease. Additionally, he said that health personnel, along with officials from Immigration and the Customs Departments are being trained in the protocol on how to detect and manage persons with the virus. “The Ministry of Health has increased its public health staff personnel at the ports of entry, and has begun the training of frontline personnel such as health personnel, customs and immigration officers at the Providenciales International Airport, and extended to all legal ports throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, and to identify and quarantine persons with a high suspicion of having Ebola Virus Disease,” the premier said.

Mega million Grand Turk resort to employ hundreds

Pastor Chad Archibald By Vivian Tyson Chad Archibald, the local partner in the $165 million resort development in Grand Turk has said that the project will offer at least 1,200 jobs during the construction phase and at least 450 permanent hospitality jobs on completion. In an interview with The SUN, Archibald, a minister of the gospel, said that ground for the development is expected to break for construction the latest February owing that all the I’s are dotted and the T’s crossed with the authorities. He said that the developers are pushing for a 2016 pre-tourism season opening. As stated by Premier Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing in his post cabinet news briefing last week, Archibald pointed out that the MOU has been approved after negotiations with the AG’s Chambers. He said that the development agreement process should be straightforward and simple because most of the major elements have already been covered in the MOU. “We really want to have a ground-breaking for January, that is as realistic as we can get, but we know it is more like February, because we are still waiting on the Crown Land Unit to send out our information for the lease on the land. “We have world renowned architects for the last 10 years being to work on this project. The project has a lot under its belt in terms of financing. We are working now to get all of our teams in place, to get all our documentation for (The Physical) Planning (Department) and the necessary folks for us to get approval,” Archibald pointed out. He said that internationally acclaimed resort Le Meridien has agreed to slap its branding on the resort, which is shaping up to be the largest employer on Grand Turk and the second largest private sector employer outside of government in the whole TCI.

“The project is positioned to move ahead. Within the next four to six months we would be in hard construction and is looking to be completed before December 2016, and it would be branded, and that is what we are pushing for. We have been working with Le Meridien since 2004. They were the first group that gave me a commitment. They were brought in by Starwood,” he said. Starwood is one of the partners in the company. It is the entity that solicits financial sponsorship for the development. “We have two letters of proof of their (Le Meridien) interest in branding it for us. And so, we are going to have two properties on the property because Grand Turk is a one-shot deal. It is not like Grace Bay where you have acres of land on the beach to build multiple properties. So we are going to end up with a unique case where you are having two unique properties to cater to an array of guests,” Archibald revealed. He explained that the intention is to have Le Meridien brand one section of the property and then affix a local brand to the other section. “One hotel advisor said to us: ‘brand one, and launch your own brand from Turks and Caicos, like Sandals did when they launched Beaches’. Turks and Caicos as a whole is a brand that people like, so that’s what we are looking at,” he said. The name of the entire property is called Caonabo, which was inspired by the Anacaona Restaurant at Grace Bay Club. Caonabo, a 1500s Taíno Hispaniola Cacique was married to Anacaona. Archibald said that his research showed that both had ties to the Turks and Caicos Islands. “I figured that it is a name that comes out of the heritage of the Turks and Caicos. So the property would be the Le Meridien Caonabo Resort. Caonabo is the unique name that we have for the property. Then the residential hotel, which is the second part of it, is called Monai Residences. Monai means many

dwelling places. When I was in university studying theology I came upon that name and I fell in love with it, so I always wanted to do it. So I decided to use Monai for our residential dwelling. Monai would be our self brand and Caonabo the property,” he said. He added: “When the Caonabo is finished we would have had 250 600sq ft. hotel rooms and 50 1,000 ultra luxury hotel rooms, along with 10 beachfront properties. On the residential side we are going to have a combination of condos and fractional (ownership), along with spa, seven restaurants of market place, a themed kids club along with conference and meeting place,” he outlined. In the meantime, Archibald noted that the hotel development has been in the works for more than 10 years, having been derailed a number of times. “In fact, in 2009/2010 we had already had the commitment by Starwood, and Starwood itself, introduced us to a financier for construction of the project. And at the time it was under the Interim Administration, we got nowhere,” he said. He added; “We have done the hardest part, which was to find an investor that we needed to control the project with; that we didn’t sell out the project, we didn’t sell out the opportunity for us to do it ourselves. And that was difficult because everybody believes that they should have absolute control of your project, total ownership, and as a local, you settle for a paycheck.” Archibald said that he was even approached by a Chinese investor, who proposed to bring in hundreds of workers, but refused the offer. “I told them that the project was intended to give people on the ground work, so we can’t afford to bring you in to take control of the project,” he asserted. Meanwhile, Archibald said that he would be seeking to give as many locals employment as much as possible during and after construction. “In our MOU we asked for, and we got the right to start up our construction and real estate because we want to control the construction. We want to give as much, if not all of the contractors on the ground in Grand Turk the opportunity to work. And I have even been talking to persons in Provo, who have not been working and have not had any means of work to come up here and work, because the more locals we can get getting some of the work the better for the economy, unlike the scenario with the Chinese investor, who want to bring in 2,000 of his own workers,” he said. He further stated: “O course, we are bringing in a major construction company to manage it for us and bring in some key technical persons, but as much as we can on the ground, we are looking for Turks and Caicos labour force.” He said that hospitality foreign labour should not be more than 25 percent. “So 75 percent of the labour force will be Turks and Caicos Islanders. We are going to work with the Community College to do training and retraining along with the brand. So we are going to set up a programme in the Community College for the training of our staff. Of course, you are going to have to send around persons to the property of whatever brand we use so they can get some hands-on understanding. But we intend to hire and train locals at every level. “A lot of people in Grand Turk are under employed. I have always been a strong advocate for minimum wage in Turks and Caicos. And for me to retrain persons and give them a new opportunity and to be able to employ a larger section of the island of Grand Turk is what I am looking forward to do. And I am talking about everybody. “There are a lot of persons in Grand Turk that we keep forgetting - Haitian nationals and otherwise. We want to see them properly employed too. We definitely offer opportunities to the next generation of children coming out of school. We want to train people everywhere, from hospitality to diving. Water activity is going to be a major thing for us, so we have to train more persons in that area and get more certified divers and boat operators as well.” One of the key elements of the MOU, according to Archibald, is to invest in education. He said talks are already in the making with airlines to operate flights between Ft. Lauderdale and Grand Turk and New York and Grand Turk, even before the resort opens. The foreign partners in the development are European and North Americans.

Aldora Robinson There has been an increase in the sexually transmitted disease, Syphilis, over the past three years, according to Aldora Robinson, the National HIV/STI Coordinator for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Robinson stressed that the syphilis occurrence is cause for concern since the reported cases have been growing rapidly each year. She said that the group most affected by this sexually transmitted disease is the 25 to 49 years old age group, noting also that the 20 to 24 group has also seen an increase. In 2012, a total of 43 persons contracted Syphilis. The over 50 age group accounted for 19 of the cases, followed by the 25 to 49 age group, with 15. The 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 age groups were tied at three cases apiece, while the 10 to 14 age group for the period recorded one case. There were 81 cases of syphilis in 2013. The 24 to 49 age group, again accounted for a whopping 72 cases. A group listed as unknown came in a distant second with six cases, while the 20 to 24 age group recorded three cases. Robinson said the 2014 cases were still being tabulated but is also showing signs of increase. She highlighted that women are most susceptible to the contracting the disease and can pass it on to her unborn child if left untreated. She emphasized that there is no need for syphilis to increase in the Turks and Caicos Islands, since not only is the disease treatable but also curable. She said that if left untreated, Syphilis can lead to severe illnesses including heart and brain failures. “Women are predominately affected and can have a double-whammy effect if left untreated during pregnancy. The mother can give birth to a baby with syphilis,” Robinson warned. She said that syphilis symptoms may include a painless sore that appears inside or near the mouth, genital or anus areas. She said also that it come in the form of a rash that appears on the palms of hands, bottom of feet, or on the body between the armpits and upper thighs. “Symptoms may come and go, testing and treatment is necessary to diagnose and cure syphilis. Syphilis can lead to heart and brain complications if left untreated. Make sure you check yourself, don’t neglect yourself,” Robinson added. She said: “Syphilis also known as ‘the great imitator’ it is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium. It is sometimes called ‘the great imitator’ because so many of the signs and symptoms are ambiguous from other diseases.” Against this backdrop, Robinson urges the use of protection whenever when engaging in certain sexual contact. “It is important for you to realize that you can’t always trust or believe what people tell you. It is at that moment when people let their guard down that infection can occurs. Caring about you means taking measures and precautions to protect yourself, having one faithful sexual partner, minimizing sexual partners, using condoms and regular health checkups,” she urged.

Young Achievers drop teacher mentors from roster

From left – Sophia Thomas – Junior Achievers Board member; Wellington Williams – Past Student of the Young Enterprise Programme and Junior Achievers Board Member; Wendy Hill – Board Member; Catherine Williams – Board Member; Sasha Arthur, last year’s Young Enterprise participant; and Stacy Cox – Board Member. By Vivian Tyson Teachers are no longer required to assist students under the Junior Achievers Programme, formerly Young Enterprise according to executives, who hosted a news conference on Tuesday (October 7, 2014) at the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce Headquarters at Graceway House, off the Leeward Highway. Wendy Hill, Office Administrator at the Chamber and Junior Achievers Board Member, said that students would now be brought into company setting to learn the ins-and-outs of the operations instead of being supervising and guided by teachers, who she said has been overworked. “This year we are bringing all students in a company environment, so they would be mentored by companies such as Fortis, Projetech, Grace Bay Car Rentals, the Youth Centre, etcetera. We won’t have link teachers; we are taking them (students) into companies. “We just thought there was a load (on the teachers). The teachers did an awesome job. We know that the

load is heavy, so this year we thought that, moving forward, the kids would gain a lot more knowledge and hands-on (information) if we took them into the company environment,” Hill said. Hill said that a company would sponsor each team. She said that in addition to dropping off forms at schools, students can sign up for the programme by visiting www.jatci.org. Stacy Cox, a member of the Board, explained that the name change from Young Enterprise to Junior Achievers reflects the TCI amalgamating with regional and international Junior Achievers branches. “This year we are launching Junior Achievers in the Turks and Caicos, which gives the board and the committee more flexibility and more support within the region. Most people within the region and across the Turks and Caicos are familiar with Junior Achievers, and we thought now that we would bring that to Turks and Caicos with great support from the Bahamas and the USA,” she said. And Hill said that possibly next year the Turks and Caicos Islands could take part a regional Junior Achievers competition, which has been ongoing for

some time. She said that a local Junior Achievers team is to travel to Grenada on October 20 to 23for a leadership training conference that would allow them to gather more knowledge on how to effectively run the local programme. Former Young Enterprise participant Wellington Williams, whose company – Turks and Caicos Treasures was adjudged the winners last season - has encouraging words for participants this year. Williams, who now turns the venture into a thriving business, which specializes in making scented candles and bath salts, said that the experience taught him everything that he now knows in business. He implored youngsters to become part of the programme, since it can serve as an open window to their future. Sasha Arthur, former administrative director of Turks and Caicos Treasures said that she learned a great deal from the programme and business, such as the importance of internal communication in a business. She also encouraged the Turks and Caicos Islands Youth to enroll in this year’s edition of the programme. She said that while a lot of work needs to put into the business to keep it afloat, the benefit is great. In the meantime, the organizers are urging businesses to support the programme, since they are still without the required number of corporate sponsors. The Junior Achievers programme runs from September to June. It has three trade shows during the period, the first is held in December. The groups are judged on each trade show. The winners are announced at the final trade show. The organizers said that this year a speech element would be added to the programme, and they are asking students to begin registering for it. Students between 15 and 19 are eligible to take part in the Junior Achievers Programme. Last year competitors, including the winners are eligible under the age limit to take part this year’s event.

Shadow Minister of Health Addresses Pollution

By Hon. Edwin Astwood Our islands are uniquely beautiful by nature. Therefore, the onus is on us to preserve them for future generations. Consider this: the average household produces one to two 19 gallon bags of rubbish in one week. Now consider the amount of rubbish that is produced on your street, then your district, then your island, then our country. Imagine most of that rubbish being scattered about your island. You may live on an island that has a schedule for garbage collection; where residents keep their properties and their surroundings tidy; and there are no uncaring persons polluting the environment with garbage and refuse. Then you can claim our slogan, “Beautiful by nature.” As Shadow Minister for Health and the elected member for Grand Turk South and Salt Cay, I am hereby appealing to the residents on our

islands to join me in my campaign to keep our islands clean. We can quantify the advantages of a clean community. The benefits run the gamut from an economic stand point to a healthy environment. We rely on tourists who come to our shores. Do we want them to take one look and decide never to return? We can play our part by practicing healthy, cleanly habits. Let us adopt these two slogans and make them our mantras: Put it in the can, man; Keep our islands clean, green and pristine. Litterers and dumpers are not welcomed in our beautiful by nature islands. Each resident can make a difference by adhering to practices that enhance our beauty rather than detract from it. We may not see road

signs that warn of fines for littering, near the Museum? Is this the image but that should not deter us from that the Minister of Tourism wishes to sell as the lasting image of Grand becoming civic minded, nonetheless. “Out of all those hundreds and Turk? Is this what the Minister of hundreds of islands lying in the seas Environment considers to be “Beautiful and oceans of the earth, the Turks& by Nature”? Is this how the Minister Caicos are our islands. Grand Turk is of Government Support Services lend my little one, so we just got to be aware support to the environment? And of them and take care of them.” This is is this what the Minister of Health considers to be promoting a healthy my personal creed. I implore those among us who do life style? Does this Government not care about our islands and the really care about any of this? From environment to desist from destroying my observations, it does not look so. I, their beauty. We must all do our part, along with other private citizens and especially the Government, who I see groups, have been assisting in cleaning as turning a blind eye to this situation our island. However, we need the Government to do its part. My advice of pollution within our islands. On any given Cruise ship day to the Government: on Grand Turk there are thousands Provide adequate resources to the persons on the streets, moving around, departments responsible for garbage sightseeing, taking pictures, and collection and cleaning; Promote caring for the environment; visiting places of interest. St Vincent bans nationals from three West African States due to Ebola scare

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has placed a ban on nationals from Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea entering the island, as Caribbean countries continue to put in place measures to deal with a possible outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the region. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said that the measure was taken given the lack of infrastructure on the island to deal with the Ebola virus for which there is no known cure. Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea are the three West African countries most affected by the Ebola virus. “Because we didn’t consider that we had the infrastructure, necessarily, to deal with an onrush of people if they were to come from any of those West African countries which we have named specifically,” Gonsalves said. On Tuesday, the Grenada government said it was considering suspending travel visas to nationals from the West African countries, noting that with the mortality rates climbing in the affected countries and the potential of spread becoming more and more eminent, the move to suspend the visa could soon be

Legal responsibility is not affected by any collaboration,” Patterson cautioned. “The most serious penalties under criminal law are reserved for those who organize the criminal enterprise and profit most from it.” Prime Minister Browne stated “simply stated, our contention is, that our predecessors in this region were subjected to the most inhumane treatment that would today be legitimate matters for trial by the International Criminal Court. “In the course of that treatment, they were deprived of their liberty and the right to their lives; they were treated not as human beings, not even as animals – they were treated as “property” to be used or disposed – as suited the thinking of their owners.” The regional conference, which is being convened by the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) is being held under the theme “‘An Expert Conference on Caribbean Reparations: Scientific Engagement and Community Mobilisation’. It is aimed at intensifying discussions regarding the scientific and popular discourse on the CRC’s 10-point plan on reparatory justice which was adopted by CARICOM leaders at their Inter-Sessional summit in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in March. The 10-point plan includes reparation in the areas of public health, education and literacy. This conference is one of several activities to address the issue of reparations for Caribbean countries whose people suffered as a result of the transatlantic trade and chattel slavery.

Trinidad upset about influx of Jamaicans

KINGSTON, Jamaica– Jamaica called on Trinidad and Tobago’s national security minister Gary Griffith to “refrain from continuing to muddy the integration waters” as it responded to comments that the influx of thousands of illegal Jamaicans into the oil-rich twin island republic is putting a strain on its resources. Foreign Affairs Minister A.J Nicholson said Griffith “does not seem to get it”, while the opposition spokesman on foreign affairs and foreign trade, Edmund Bartlett, described Griffith’s statement as “hostile and disrespectful and merits the strongest response from our government”. Last week, Griffith in a statement supporting the actions of Immigrations officers to deport 13 Jamaicans last month, said the

authorities cannot act as a “rubber stamp” when it comes to allowing people into the country. “It is to be noted that at this present time, there are more than 19,000 Jamaicans in Trinidad and Tobago who have entered at legitimate ports of entry, but who have remained illegally and cannot be accounted for,” Griffith said. He described the statistics as “alarming”, saying “that these people are dependent on State resources such as education and health care, may be employed and are not subject to taxes, which amounts to a loss of revenue of over $1 billion (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) per annum”. Nicholson, who has been holding talks with his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart, Winston Dookeran following a

similar immigration issue just over a year ago, said “Mr. Griffith continues to concentrate on the number of Jamaicans who have been admitted into T&T, which consists of over 90 per cent of those who travel to the twin-island republic. “We suggest that the Trinidad and Tobago security minister refrain from continuing to muddy the integration waters.” Reacting to the latest incident in which the Jamaicans were deported, Nicholson said the region needs to be assured that the immigration authorities are abiding by the agreements reached between the foreign ministers of both countries. This, he said, included the parameters established by the ruling of the Caribbean Court of

Justice in the Shanique Myrie case concerning both the landing of CARICOM nationals and how prospective returnees are to be treated. “The Trinidad and Tobago foreign minister has advised that he is to receive a written report relating to how the recent complaining 13 were treated at Piarco, pending their return to Jamaica,” said Nicholson. Last year, the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled that Myrie be awarded BDS$77, 240 (One BDS dollar =US$0.50 cents) in damages after she had alleged that when she travelled to Barbados on March 14, 2011 she was discriminated against because of her nationality, subjected to a body cavity search, detained overnight in a cell and deported to

Jamaica the following day. Myrie also claimed that she was subjected to derogatory remarks by a Barbadian Immigration officer and asked the CCJ to determine the minimum standard of treatment applicable to CARICOM citizens moving around the region. In his statement, Bartlett said if there are indeed 19,000 u n d o c u m e n t e d Jamaicans in Trinidad, costing that Government in excess of one billion dollars “what are the steps being taken to deal with the matter, and has that information been conveyed to our government. Bartlett asked how many Trinidadians of similar status are living in Jamaica and at what cost to Jamaica. “Certainly every Caribbean country

can identify nationals from other CARICOM states whose citizens are residing without appropriate documentation within their borders. Is that reason to be rude and disrespectful to those seeking to enter? “Of what value is the CARICOM passport we are required to carry in place of the Jamaican passport if citizens are subjected to demeaning and humiliating treatment when they arrive at the borders of member states?” Bartlett said the matter must be treated with the utmost priority by the prime minister of the two CARICOM countries and their foreign minister, “as it goes to the heart of the integration movement in the region, and is a dealbreaker in any continued relations with Trinidad”.

Serious decisions to make on Trinidad ‘terrorists’, says national security minister

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- If there is clear evidence people have gone abroad and involved themselves in terrorist activity, then the government of Trinidad and Tobago will have to make “very serious decisions” with respect to how to treat with such people if and when they attempt to return home, National Security Minister Gary Griffith told the Trinidad Express. He was responding to questions on what policy the government had toward people who were fighting alongside supporters of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. Griffith said it was a very technical issue. Some countries have adopted a policy of having such persons debarred from re-entering on the basis that they are a danger to national security. It is a matter which we have to discuss at the level of the National Security Council,” he said. He added: “If it is clear that individuals have gone and involved themselves in terrorist activity, obviously we will have to make some very serious decisions because the security of the country is of paramount importance.” Over the past week, there have been

increasing media reports, including video clips of nationals allegedly fighting for terrorist group ISIS in Syria. Griffith, speaking on a radio programme, said there were “several nationals now linked to the group”. Two nationals have already been identified as fighters with ISIS, with the mother of one of the men confirming her son was indeed fighting on behalf of the group. Joan Crawford told the Sunday Express at the weekend her son, Shane, 29, had gone to Syria to fight on behalf of ISIS, prompted by the inadequacy of what his life had become in Trinidad and the need to find a greater purpose. “He is fighting. He does not believe in raping women and killing children. It is those crimes which were being committed in Syria which prompted him to go and fight. He life is better. He has purpose. He has his family and he is not coming back here,” she said. Griffith, during his radio interview, suggested there are more Trinidadian nationals supporting terrorist groups. “It is no longer the case where 20 years ago what we saw as a terrorist... was just someone with explosives around his waist and you pull a pin.

The concept of terrorism has now was right in doing so. moved to different elements. If I decide to do that, then God help me. But again I am not saying that is what we intend to do in Trinidad and Tobago. We have to be very clear between intelligence and evidence,” he told radio listeners. Trinidad and Tobago last month cosponsored a United States resolution at the United Nations outlawing terrorism and Griffith said Port of Spain, which was one of two Caribbean countries to sign on to the US resolution, Minister of National Security, Senator Gary Griffith

Tourist sues after contracting illness at resort LONDON, England– British tourist Sarah Bowes-Phipps’ dream Caribbean holiday abruptly turned into a nightmare when she allegedly came down with such a severe case of food poisoning that she had to have her gall bladder surgically removed. Claiming that she contracted a “life-threatening illness” on an all-inclusive package holiday, the 31-year-old mother of one is suing Virgin Holidays for up to half a million pounds. According to Bowes-Phipps, she fell ill a day after eating a piece of “unknown” fish in a restaurant infested with birds and stray cats at the Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua. A writ filed at London’s High Court stated that Mrs Bowes-Phipps ate “a small piece of an unknown fish in breadcrumbs, served lukewarm” after ordering the “catch of the day” at the resort’s beach bar and grill in September 2011. Bowes-Phipps barrister, Asela Wijeyaratne, further stated in the writ that she did not consider the fish to have tasted “fresh,” and she went on to be awoken by “shooting, stabbing pains” next day and had to be transported to hospital by ambulance. She was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Florida, where she underwent emergency surgery, and remained there for almost a month before being airlifted back home to the UK, where she underwent further surgery. Bowes-Phipps, from St Albans, was diagnosed with salmonella and secondary septicaemia. She is now seeking up to £500,000 in compensation from Virgin Holidays Ltd. Mr Wijeyaratne said that Virgin sold Mrs Bowes-

Phipps and her husband an all-inclusive one-week package holiday, and she did not consume any food or drink outside of the resort. The barrister claimed that Virgin, through their agents at the hotel, “failed to ensure that food and drink served to Mrs Bowes-Phipps was safe for human consumption.” He added that the resort had also “permitted stray cats and birds to enter the beach bar and grill restaurant with the consequent risk of contamination.” The barrister alleged that there were no adequate food hygiene systems at the hotel and that the “hotel accommodation was so unsafe that no reasonable holidaymaker would agree to go on holiday there.” According to the writ, the contents of which have not been tested in evidence before a judge, Mrs Bowes-Phipps’ claim is “currently expected to exceed £300,000, but to be less than £500,000 in total.” A Virgin Holidays spokesperson said: “Virgin Holidays is aware of the complaints raised by Mrs Bowes-Phipps and the claim issued in the High Court of Justice. “Virgin Holidays exercised all reasonable care and skill in the selection of the Verandah Resort and the monitoring of the services and facilities, including the provision of food and beverages. “As Mrs Bowes-Phipps has now issued proceedings, solicitors representing the Verandah Resort will be filing a defence to the claim and it would be inappropriate for Virgin Holidays to comment any further on the matters now forming part of legal proceedings.”

ISIS seeks to justify enslaving women and girls ARBIL Iraq - The Islamic State group said it enslaved families from the minority Yazidi sect after overrunning their villages in northwestern Iraq, in what it praised as the revival of an ancient custom of using women and children as spoils of war. In an article in its English-language online magazine Dabiq, the group provides what it says is religious justification for the enslavement of defeated “idolators”. The ancient custom of enslavement had fallen out of use because of deviation from true Islam, but was revived when fighters overran Yazidi villages in Iraq’s Sinjar region. “After capture, the Yazidi women and children were then divided according to the Shariah amongst the fighters of the Islamic State who participated in the Sinjar operations, after one fifth of the slaves were transferred to the Islamic State’s authority to be divided as khums,” it said. Khums is a traditional tax on the spoils of war. “This large-scale enslavement of mushrik (idolator) families is probably the first since the abandonment of Shariah law,” it said.

Dabiq, distributed in a slickly- killing and displacing thousands produced online format, is described of Christians, Shi’ite Shabaks and by the group SITE that monitors Turkmen who lived for centuries in militant publications as Islamic one of the most diverse parts of the State’s English-language magazine. Mothers had not been separated from their young children, it said. U.S.-led air strikes have halted Islamic State advances in the north of Iraq, allowing Kurdish forces to regain ground. Many of the Yazidis trapped on the mountain they consider a holy site, Mount Sinjar, were eventually able to escape, but their nearby villages are still under militant control. On Sunday, Human Rights Watch said Islamic State was holding hundreds of Yazidis captive in both Iraq and Syria and that the group had systematically separated young women and teenage girls from their families, forcing some into marriage with fighters.

New Florida million-dollar home has nice view, but built on wrong lot

Thia Luxury mansion was built on the wrong lot A Florida builder is trying to figure out what to do after constructing a million-dollar, ocean-view home in Florida on the wrong lot, authorities said. The mistake occurred after two state-certified surveyors on the job separately marked the wrong property, said Carl Laundrie, spokesman for Flagler County on the Atlantic Coast north of Daytona Beach. Laundrie said there were few landmarks in the new Hammock Dunes subdivision that could have helped someone catch the error. “There is no giant oak tree on one corner of the lot so you would say, okay, this must be the lot. This particular piece of land is basically in a field back behind the dune,” Laundrie said. The 5,300-square-foot (492-sq-meter) house, which was completed in March, includes five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, a theater, game room and swimming pool, according to gotoby.com, a local real estate news site. Mark and Brenda Voss of Linn, Missouri, who had the home built, did not return calls for comment, nor did Andrew Massaro and Brooke Triplett of Ocean

Isle Beach, North Carolina, who own the lot. The Vosses own the lot next door to the one on which the house was built. Flagler County Property Appraiser Jay Gardner said the mistake was discovered in September by a third surveyor working in the neighborhood. The builder, Robbie Richmond of Keystone Homes, who the real estate website described as one of the area’s most respected builders, did not return a call for comment. Flagler County Property Appraiser Jay Gardner said he spoke to Richmond. “All he wants to do is get it right,” Gardner said. Representatives of the surveying companies on the project also did not return calls for comment. “It’s up to the builder to rectify the situation, and the builder relied on the surveyor. I assume everything is going to be headed to court,{“ said Laundrie. Gardner said he hadn’t spoken to the Vosses, but that Massaro was calm when informed of the problem. ‘He wasn’t tickled but he seemed to handle it quite well,” Gardner said. “It happens from time to time.”

Oil slide puts Venezuela’s Maduro under pressure for reforms

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro arrives at a news conference at Miraflores Palace in Caracas October 15, 2014 The slump in global oil prices has heightened pressure on President Nicolas Maduro to enact politically risky reforms to bolster Venezuela’s weak public finances and its ability to pay down debt. Crude prices under $85 have given new voice to reformers within Maduro’s government, and critics outside, who say he needs to make urgent changes. “The government continues to study the changes ... The decisions will come bit by bit,” a senior official at state oil company PDVSA said, explaining a package of reforms that were mooted earlier this year and include unifying a complex system of exchange rates effectively devaluing the bolivar currency. A hike in domestic gasoline prices, currently the cheapest in the world at less than 2 U.S. cents per liter, is also under discussion although the official said that any policy changes would be implemented gradually to minimize public backlash. The idea of a fuel price hike is being debated by the National Assembly and its energy commission president, Fernando Soto, said it could be decided by year end. “There’s a majority consensus that we’re practically giving away gasoline.” Any change to the currency control regime would, sources and economists say, probably mean weakening the lowest official rate of 6.3 to the dollar to double that or more. Dollars are currently available at two other official rates of about 12 and 50 bolivars, while they trade at 100 on the black market. The reforms would give Maduro’s government some much-needed fiscal breathing space and help to ease concerns over whether it will be able to service its debt, although they could also fuel inflation and weaken support for his government. Over 90 percent of the state’s foreign revenues come from oil so those fears have deepened as the price of oil falls. “If the government doesn’t make adjustments, any annual (oil) price under $90 dollars will be a problem,” said Benjamin Ramsey, analyst with JP Morgan. The bid price on Venezuela’s benchmark sovereign bond due 2027 has fallen 32.5 percent to 60 cents on the dollar in the last 2-1/2 months, with the yield popped up to nearly 17 percent. The cost for insuring a $10 million trade on Venezuela’s sovereign debt for 5 years surged again on Thursday, to $4.175 million. That is almost triple the price of $1.5 million in late June. CRUDE SHOCK The four-month rout in oil markets, driven by signs of lower growth and demand for crude in Europe as well as signs that OPEC’s core Gulf members are in no hurry to cut production, has left Brent crude at under $84 and U.S. crude below $82. It could not have come at a worse time for Venezuela, which is already grappling with an economic slump, inflation running at above 60 percent and currency restrictions that have led to widespread shortages. The government also faces looming payments on foreign debt and in arbitration cases following nationalizations under socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who led Venezuela from 1999 until his death from cancer last year. And reforms aimed at improving public finances carry political and social risks. Maduro’s approval ratings have already fallen to about 35 percent, analysts expect the economy to shrink between 1 and 4 percent this year and there are important legislative elections in 2015.

US lawmakers blast government’s Ebola response, urge travel ban Congressional lawmakers criticized the government’s response to Ebola in the United States on Thursday as some called, at a congressional hearing probing efforts to contain the virus, for a ban on travel from epidemic-stricken West Africa. Federal Aviation Administration chief Michael Huerta told reporters separately that the United States is assessing whether to issue a travel ban “on a day-to-day basis” but that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had determined that a ban would not address the challenges posed by Ebola. The congressional hearing comes as concerns about the virus in the United States are accelerating. Bank robber waits for police after hold-up A suspected robber with a guilty conscience walked out of a Washington state bank with stolen cash on Tuesday then waited outside the building for police to arrest him, police said. The 64-year-old man walked into a Banner Bank branch in Bellingham early on Tuesday and handed a teller a note demanding cash, the Bellingham Police Department said in a statement. The teller complied, and the man, identified as Richard Gorton, took the money and left, police said. But instead of fleeing the scene, he lingered near the bank building where he was discovered by officers. “He admitted to officers that he had committed this crime and indicated that he became remorseful right after he walked out of the bank,” police said, adding that Gorton told officers he had decided to wait for police instead of making a run with the cash. The remorseful robber faces charges of first degree robbery and was being held in the Whatcom County Jail awaiting arraignment, police said. The amount of money stolen was not disclosed by police.

Airbus A350 cleared to fly record distance on one engine Airbus has won permission for its twin-engined A350 to fly more than six hours on one engine in the event of a breakdown, a key approval that allows its new long-haul jet to fly almost any passenger route. The European Aviation Safety Agency granted the Airbus jet Extended Operations, known as ETOPS, of “beyond 180 minutes”, but will allow pilots to fly the A350 for up to 370 minutes if one engine shuts down, Airbus said. ETOPS rules determine the maximum flying time on one engine that jets can stray from the nearest airport at any point during their journey -- so they can make it back safely in the event the other engine fails. That ceiling determines the routes that modern twinengined jets can take over deserted areas and oceans and is therefore seen as crucial to the sales pitches for such aircraft. The maximum A350 diversion time of six hours and 10 minutes confirms an earlier Reuters report [ID:nL6N0SA1HU]. It is equivalent to a maximum diversion distance of 2,500 nautical miles (4,630 km), an industry record, Airbus said. Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has clearance to operate for 330 minutes on one engine, but the difference between the two categories is widely viewed as a marketing one since both jets will have enough margin to operate on most commercial routes.

Obama to nominate new attorney general after November 4 elections

President Barack Obama will wait until after Nov. 4 congressional elections to nominate a new U.S. attorney general, a White House official said. The decision to delay allows Obama more time to pick a replacement for Attorney General Eric Holder and means the new nominee will not get mired in election-year politics in the final weeks of the congressional election campaign. A delay in the announcement had been sought by some Senate Democrats who wanted to avoid a fresh controversy ahead of the elections. Obama is considering a number of people with legal experience for the position, including former White House

iPad Mini, iPad Air, iMac All Updated at Apple Event

The Air is getting a little thinner. At an event in California on Thursday, Apple unveiled a new, slimmer version of its iPad Air, as well as its updates to its iPad mini and iMac computers. The bulk of the time was spent on the iPad Air 2. Though the screen size of the iPad stays the same, the Air 2 is thinner and lighter than last year’s iPad Air and adds Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner to unlock the device. Apple also introduced the iPad mini 3, an update to its smaller iPad mini. That tablet also gets Touch ID, as well as improved cameras. Both iPad models were last updated by Apple in October 2013. Though the tablets grabbed the headlines (including the headline on this story), Apple also announced that its new operating system, OS X Yosemite, was available immediately as a free download from the App Store. The company first detailed OS X Yosemite, which features a light redesign and new compatibility features for iPhone and iPad, in June. iOS, the operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, also gets an update: iOS 8.1 will be available as a free download Monday, Oct. 20. Apple also introduced a version of its iMac all-in-one desktop computer with a high-resolution Retina display. Apple also announced that Apple Pay, its new service that lets you pay at the register or online with your Apple device, will launch Monday. iPad Air 2 The headlining feature of the iPad Air 2 is its thinness: At 6.1 millimeters, it’s the sveltest iPad yet. For comparison, the first iPad Air was 7.5 millimeters thick, and the first iPad was nearly twice as thick. The iPad Air 2 will run iOS 8.1 and comes with a new anti-reflective screen and a faster processor. For the first time, Apple’s tablets also get

Apple CEO Tim Cook holds up the iPad Air 2, which, for the first time, will be available in gold. the company’s Touch ID fingerprint unlock feature, which debuted with the iPhone 5s in 2013. Apple says the iPad Air 2 will get 10 hours of battery life, the same as the first iPad Air. The cameras on both the front and the back of the device have been improved, too. Apple first unveiled the iPad, a tablet with a 9.7-inch display, in 2010, setting off a tablet-buying frenzy that has since cooled down somewhat. This was followed by the iPad 2 in 2011; Apple dropped the numbering convention with its new iPad in 2012, dubbing it simply “iPad.” Last year, Apple introduced the iPad Air, a thinner version of the iPad. The iPad enjoys sales numbers in the high millions; as Mashable notes, Apple remains the No. 1 tablet seller in the United States “by a wide margin.” Wall Street analysts, however, have dinged Apple for its slowing growth,

as sales rates of iPads have declined from year to year. The iPad Air will start at $499 for a model with WiFi and 16 GB. A 64 GB model will cost $599, and a 128 GB model will cost $699. For iPad Air models that can also connect to your cellular network, add $130 to each of those prices. The first iPad Air, meanwhile, gets a price cut of $100 per model. Preorders will begin Oct. 17 and orders will start shipping next week. iPad mini Apple also introduced the iPad Mini 3, though it did not change its design. Instead, the iPad Mini gets improved cameras, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and a new gold color option. Apple added the iPad mini, a scaled-down version of the iPad with a smaller, 7.6-inch display, in 2012.

Sears says Kmart stores hit by data breach Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD.O) said it was the victim of a cyberattack that likely resulted in the theft of some customer payment cards at its Kmart stores, the latest in a series of computer security breaches to hit U.S. companies and dealing a fresh blow to the struggling U.S. retailer. The U.S. Secret Service confirmed it was investigating the breach, which occurred in September and compromised the systems of Kmart, which has about 1,200 stores across the United States. The breach did not affect the Sears department store chain. A Sears spokesman said he could not say how many credit and debit card numbers had been taken. He added that the personal information, debit card PIN numbers, email addresses and Social Security numbers of its customers remained safe. Security professionals said they were not surprised to learn that yet another major retailer was reporting a breach, adding they believe many big merchants do not have adequate systems for detecting cyberattacks, which means they still remain easy prey for hackers. “This is going to continue indefinitely until people change their practices,” said Shawn Henry, a

former senior cyber cop with the FBI who is now of the president of cyber forensics firm CrowdStrike Services. He said that hackers are able to get into networks because they are “so broad and vast” that attackers will always find a way in. Retailers need to do a better job of quickly detecting them before they begin to steal data, he said. Sears said that the attackers used malicious software that was undetectible using anti-virus software, highlighting the challenge of keeping up with the evolving techniques of computer hackers. Company spokesman Chris Brathwaite said Sears had been upgrading its systems even before the recent spate of incidents involving retailers, which included a massive breach of the systems of Target Corp (TGT.N) in late 2013. “Our IT team was able to quickly remove the malware and we are deploying further advanced software to protect our customers’ information,” Brathwaite said. Security experts say retailers have traditionally not invested enough in security, partly because of the industry’s relatively thin profit margins.

That tablet was criticized for its lowresolution display; last year, Apple updated the iPad mini with its highquality Retina display. The iPad mini will start at $399 for a 16 GB model. A 64 GB model will cost $499, and a 124 GB model will cost $599. For iPad mini models that can also connect to your cellular network, add $130 to each of those prices. The iPad mini 2 will remain on sale and cost $299; the original iPad mini, meanwhile, will be available in a 16GB version for $249. Preorders will begin Oct. 17 and orders will start shipping next week. Apple also unveiled a new iMac, its all-in-one desktop computer. Apple added its ultra high-definition Retina display to its 27-inch version of the iMac, which will give it one of the best screens of any desktop computer. Previously, Apple had brought its Retina display to its iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and MacBook Pro laptop. This is Apple’s largest high-resolution display yet. The new iMac will come with 1 Terabyte of storage and a fast 3.5GHz processor. The iMac with Retina will start at $2,499. The 21.5-inch iMac and 17inch iMac, which do not have Retina displays, will remain on sale at $1799 and $1099, respectively. OS X Yosemite

OS X Yosemite, the new operating system for Apple’s desktop and laptop computers, is now available as a free download, Apple also announced. Yosemite redesigns the Mac operating system to look more like the iOS you have on your iPhone or iPad. It also comes with a new feature called Continuity that makes it easier to begin work on your MacBook and continue on your mobile device, or vice versa. It lets you write text messages and make phone calls from your desktop computer.

Facebook launches Safety Check tool for users affected by major disaster

Facebook wants to know that you’re safe and sound. After a major disaster or crisis -- say, an earthquake or a hurricane -- friends and family often scramble to locate and get updates from loved ones who might have been affected. Now the world’s largest social network is stepping in to help that process. Facebook has launched Safety Check, a tool that will help users let family and friends know they’re safe, check on others in the affected area and mark their friends as safe. “It is in these moments that communication is most critical both for people in the affected areas and for their friends and families anxious for news,” Facebook said in a blog post. Here’s how Safety Check works: Once a natural disaster strikes, the tool will be activated and, if you’re in the affected area, you will receive a Facebook notification asking if you’re safe. Facebook will determine locations based on the city you have listed in your profile, your last location if you’ve opted in for the Nearby Friends feature and the city where you are using the Internet.

Google tests waters for potential ultra-fast wireless service

A technician gets cabling out of his truck to install Google Fiber in a residential home Google Inc is preparing to test new technology that may provide the foundation for a wireless version of its high-speed “Fiber” Internet service, according to telecommunication experts who scrutinized the company’s regulatory filings. In a public but little-noticed application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday, Google asked the agency for permission to conduct tests in California across different wireless spectrums, including a rarely-used millimeter-wave frequency capable of transmitting large amounts of data. It is unclear from the heavily

redacted filing what exactly Google threat to the cable-telecoms oligopoly, intends to do, but it does signal the experts said. Chrysler recalls more than 900,000 vehicles globally

Jeep Wrangler SUVs from model years 2011 through 2013 are being recalled because of a fire risk Chrysler Group on Thursday announced two global recalls of more than 900,000 cars and SUVs combined for problems that could cause fires. Chrysler, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCHA.MI), is recalling about 470,000 cars and SUVs globally from model years 2011 through 2014 and equipped with a 3.6 liter engine and a 160 amp alternator, according to the company and documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The alternator may suddenly fail, possibly causing a stall or fire and increasing the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA documents. The second recall covers about 437,000 Jeep Wrangler SUVs globally from model years 2011 through 2013 because of a fire risk, according to the NHTSA documents. They said water in the exterior heated power mirror electrical connector could cause an electrical short. Chrysler said it was unaware of any injuries resulting from either problem. The automaker said

one accident might have stemmed from the first problem, but had no reports of fire. It was not aware of any accidents from the second problem. The repair for the first recall is still under development, according to the NHTSA documents. Chrysler plans to begin notifying owners of the recall on Nov. 28, according to the NHTSA documents. Models affected in this recall include the Chrysler 300 sedan, Dodge Challenger and Charger cars, and Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. An estimated 434,581 of the recalled vehicles are in the United States, 16,080 in Canada, 2,335 in Mexico and 17,000 outside North America, Chrysler said. The repair for the Wrangler recall, which should begin on Dec. 5, includes moving the exterior mirror power feed to a separate connector and adding a water shield, according to the NHTSA documents. In that recall, an estimated 313,236 of the SUVs are in the United States, 39,627 in Canada, 5,685 in Mexico and 78,369 outside of North America, Chrysler said.

Access and Energy division leading the effort to offer high-speed fiber networks in Kansas City and other locations, signed off as the authorized person submitting Google’s FCC application. The world’s No.1 Internet search engine has expanded into providing consumers with services such as Internet access. The company said it wants to roll out its high-speed Internet service to more than 30 U.S. cities, and in 2013 it struck a deal to provide free wireless Internet access to 7,000 Starbucks cafes across America. Earlier this year, technology news website The Information reported that Google was exploring ways to offer a full-fledged wireless service, with voice and Internet access, in markets where the company already offers its Fiber service. Google’s application to conduct the 180-day test is heavily redacted to protect confidential information that Google said would provide “valuable insight into Google’s technology innovations and potential business plans and strategy.” The purpose of the test is so that Google can “expeditiously test radios in a way that is likely to contribute to the development, extension, expansion or utilization of the radio art,” Google stated cryptically in one of the filings. oogle declined to comment on the FCC filing.

Apple and Facebook will pay for female employees to freeze their eggs Apple Inc and Facebook Inc will help pay for female employees to freeze their eggs, signaling a willingness to spend on perks and benefits in a race to acquire top-flight talent. From January, Apple will pay both full- and parttime employees up to $20,000 for procedure and storage costs for female employees to freeze their eggs. “We continue to expand our benefits for women, with a new extended maternity leave policy, along with cryopreservation and egg storage as part of our extensive support for infertility treatments,” Apple said in a statement. “We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families.” NBC News reported on Tuesday that Facebook recently began covering egg-freezing for non-medical reasons, making it one of the first major employers in the technology sector to do so. A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed that the company rolled out the benefit in January in response to requests from employees, among other reasons. Egg freezing is a pricey but increasingly popular option for women. It enables women to delay child bearing. The procedure is also used by women who have to undergo medical treatments that interfere with fertility such as with cancer. The procedure typically costs up to $10,000, with an additional $500 for storage each year. In the raging war for talent, Silicon Valley companies are offering an array of new familyplanning perks. Apple said it also reimburses eligible expenses associated with the legal adoption of a child. “Egg freezing gives women more control,” said Jennifer Tye, marketing lead for Glow, a mobile application aimed at helping women avoid pregnancy or conceive. “When I turned 30, I had this notion that my biological clock was ticking, but I didn’t know what my options were,” said Tye. “These employers should be commended.” The news has sparked debate on social media. Some commentators say these companies should focus their efforts on creating a more balanced culture, with more flexibility for new parents.

Cricket players association president says he will not resign

President of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds KINGSTON, Jamaica - President of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, says he will not tender his resignation in the wake of a fall-out with the members who are currently on tour in India. The players, led by skipper Dwayne Bravo, have demanded Hinds’ resignation along with other officials of WIPA because of conflict of interest. In a letter to Hinds Bravo said the players have lost confidence in the president because of the Collective Bargaining Agreement/Memorandum of Understanding he signed with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on their behalf. “I must take this opportunity to remind you that there is a process embedded in WIPA’s Memorandum & Articles of Association regarding the election and removal of officers, and that your call for some

members of the current executive and Board to resign is not supported by that process,” said Hinds in his letter to Bravo. “We were placed here by the rules of our Association, and will leave only according to the will of the majority of our membership as provided for in those rules”. Hinds, also WIPA’s chief executive, serves as Jamaica’s chairman of selectors and is a Board member of the Jamaica Cricket Association. “There will be no resignation by any member of the current executive a,” declared Hinds. “They (negotiating team) acted and fulfilled their duties properly in all the circumstances, including the subsequent ratification of the signing of the new agreement by the Directors present at our Board meeting held in Jamaica on October 2nd, 2014”. The players protested the new terms of WIPA’s

Former cricket greats pay tribute to Sir Viv LONDON, England - Glowing tribute has been paid to cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards, one of the most destructive batsmen of a dominant era for West Indies. Some of the most decorated names of West Indian cricket’s golden era joined in the special tributes to Richards during a dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground recently. They included former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and former team mates Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge and Colin Croft. “It’s not often I’m moved but this has been a truly special evening and something I won’t forget for a very, very long time,” said Sir Viv. “I’d like to thank everyone who has come here tonight and all the speakers for their incredibly kind words.” Former England internationals Derek Underwood, David Gower, Mike Gatting, Geoff Miller as well as broadcast legends Tony Cozier

CBA/MOU deal with the WICB by threatening strike action on the eve of the first One-Day International against India on Wednesday. They argue that the new agreement has reduced their income and that their Test, ODI and Twenty20 fees had been decreased by 75 per cent. They also claim that their International Cricket Council fees have been decreased by “close to 100 per cent” and that they would not be compensated for the use of their rights under the new deal. Hinds’ letter to Bravo dismisses those claims as false and says the new agreement reflects a 15 percent across the board increase in match fees and retainer contracts that range from 12.5% to 25%, along with the introduction of two new contract categories. The WIPA president has also disputed Bravo’s claims that the players’ union is receiving, in addition to the 3% of all players earnings, a sum of $500,000.00 USD annually from WICB once the new agreement remains. “The assertion is wrong on 2 counts: WIPA does not receive 3% of all players’ earnings. In fact there are many of our members who contribute nothing to the Association by way of dues – including a number of them who are currently on tour in India,” said Hinds. “May I also remind you that it was this current WIPA executive which (at the request of some “senior players”) reduced the percentage of players’ earnings to be paid over as dues from the previous 5% to the current 3%”. Hinds, a former West Indies cricketer, has also refuted claims that the players have not been consulted and sought to clarify concerns raised by Bravo about “special relationship” between WIPA and WICB. “It is a departure from the adversarial nature which characterized it under WIPA’s previous leadership,” Hinds told Bravo in his letter. “My Executive has made a designed effort to operate in an environment of mutual respect and professionalism, with the common goal of providing an opportunity to earn a livable wage for more of your fellow cricketers”.

Royals headed to first Series since 1985

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- James Shields led thousands of fans in a celebratory chant. Lorenzo Cain pranced along the warning track, cradling his newborn son. Ned Yost finally allowed himself to smile. After nearly three decades spent as one of the game’s biggest laughingstocks, the Kansas City Royals are once again baseball royalty. They are headed to their first World Series since 1985, finishing a four-game sweep in the AL Championship Series with a 2-1 victory Wednesday over the Baltimore Orioles. In a perfect postseason, the Royals are intent to relish every moment. ‘’It’s hard to explain,’’ said Cain, whose clutch hits and dramatic catches earned him the series MVP award. ‘’We’re clicking at the right moment right now.’’ There’s no doubt about that. Now, the Royals will carry an 11-game playoff win streak into the World Series, one shy of the major league record. That includes their first eight this season, something that had never been done in postseason history. Kansas City beat Oakland in a 12-inning wild-card thriller to start things off, then swept the Los Angeles Angels in the Divisional Series. Kansas City will open its first World Series since 1985 on Tuesday against the winner of the NLCS between the Giants and Cardinals. San Francisco leads that series 2-1. Coincidentally, it was the Cardinals who the Royals beat for their only World Series title. ‘’It’s been an amazing run,’’ Royals outfielder Alex Gordon said. ‘’It’s nothing better than when you win. Today, same old story: good pitching, good defense and scratch out a win.’’ Same old story for the Orioles, too: Solid pitching, good defense - and just not enough offense. They managed seven hits over the last two games against Kansas City, resulting in the first sweep for the

Lionel Messi does not let fame go to his head

Lionel Messi’s father insists his son has always remained grounded throughout his career as he marks the 10th anniversary of his Barcelona debut on Thursday. Messi came off the bench for Barca during their clash against Espanyol at the age of just 17, and has since gone on a meteoric rise to become one of the greatest players the world has ever seen. The 27-year-old is now a four-time World Player of the Year and his 361 goals from 434 games have inspired his club to 21 trophies, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns. The Argentina captain can break yet another record on Saturday when Barcelona face Eibar as he lies just two off Telmo Zarra’s six-decade-old La Liga scoring record of 251 goals. Yet despite all the success and accolades that have come his way -- and the criticism that has sometimes accompanied it -- Jorge Messi says his son has not let any of it go to his head. “There are times when there is too much praise and other moments when the criticism is excessive,” he told Cadena Cope. “You have to stop somewhere in the middle and simply look forward. “He reads and listens to everyone and I don’t know how he does it but he doesn’t attach much importance to either the good or the bad. “People don’t know him. He is a very normal lad,

like any other. He spends time with his family, he has fun, he tries to enjoy life. He isn’t any different.” Meanwhile, Jorge Messi was at pains to stress that his son has had nothing to do with his own tax affairs which have led to an investigation into alleged fraud. Messi and his father have been accused of defrauding the Spanish state of more than 4 million euros by filing incomplete returns for the years 2007 to 2009. The pair have denied any wrongdoing, and Jorge Messi is adamant his son should not be included in the ongoing investigation. “In actual fact I want to be quite cautious over this [topic],” he said. “I have always said it, he had absolutely nothing to do with it, so there is no need to talk about it. My lawyers are dealing with this issue so it’s something with me and has nothing to do with him.” In the phone interview, Jorge Messi reiterated from his home in Argentina that his son could return to Rosario in the twilight of his career. “He loves Barca but you never know, life takes many turns. He loves Rosario, this club [Newells] and this city, which he made his home. I don’t know, life takes many turns. I see players at 34 or 35 perform better than when they were young.” Jorge Messi also said the arrival of Luis Suarez will help Barcelona step up their game and added that the rivalry with Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo

Kobe says players are overpaid, so are owners

Bryant signed a two-year extension worth a reported $48.5 million with the Lakers in 2013. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- A week after posting his thoughts on the NBA’s new television contract on Twitter, Kobe Bryant expounded on the subject Tuesday after the Los Angeles Lakers’ practice, going so far as to say that players “are overpaid, but so are the owners. And you have to fight for what your market value is.” “Listen, business is business,” Bryant said. “I think people get that confused very easily in understanding that players should take substantially less than their market value in order to win championships.” Last week, after the NBA announced its record-breaking nine-year television contract with ESPN and Turner Broadcasting worth a reported $24 billion, Bryant fired off a tweet on the matter. Bryant signed a two-year extension worth a reported $48.5 million with the Lakers in 2013. According to ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne, Bryant will maintain his status as the NBA’s highest-paid player over the course of the extension, making $23.5 million in the first year and $25 million in the second. “It’s very easy to look at the elite players around the league and talk about the amount of money that they get paid and compare that with the average [player],” Bryant said. “But we don’t look at what the

owners get paid and how much revenue they generate off the backs of these players.” According to ESPN.com’s Larry Coon, who cited league sources, the current TV network deal will provide $1.03 billion in league revenue in 2015-16, and that figure will increase by about $1.1 billion in 201617 when the new deal kicks in. Moreover, the new deal will provide an average of $2.66 billion per year to the NBA, nearly tripling what the current deal paid (nearly $940 million per season). “And now,” Bryant continued, “you have a TV deal that comes out and you look at it almost being up a billion dollars [more] than the previous one, and this is coming off the back of a lockout [in 2011] in which the [salary] cap -- it’s not a hard cap, but it’s pretty close to being a hard cap. “It’ll be interesting to see what happens in this next labor agreement, because my understanding is this TV deal kicks in in the last year of this current agreement. So I’m sure they’ll try to lock us out again [in 2017] and harden the cap even more.” New collective bargaining is expected to occur in the summer of 2017. “I think as players, you’ve kind of got to hold your ground a little bit and not be afraid of what the public perception is,” Bryant said. “Instead, you try to educate the public a little bit and understand it’s not about complaining about how much you’re making, because that’s ridiculous. We are overpaid, but so are the owners. And you have to fight for what your market value is.” When asked what his recent extension means given the financial reality, Bryant said: “I’m the luckiest basketball player in the league, because I got very fortunate to be with an organization that takes care of its players, rewards its players and has a long history of doing that.” He added: “I think it speaks volumes, not only to me and to this city but to other players around this league as well. You look around at some of the other owners that try to milk their players or get rid of them or discard them, this organization doesn’t do that.”

helps football. “What will grow will be collaboration,” he said of Suarez’s presence. “There are great players in this club and his arrival will make the team stronger and all will think about collaborating more.

How Roger Federer can steal the No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer With his victory over Gilles Simon at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, Roger Federer moved to No. 2 in the ATP rankings, just 990 points behind Novak Djokovic in the year-to-date points race. That puts the 33-year-old Federer within striking distance of the year-end No. 1 ranking, something that would be improbable both at his advanced age and with nary a Grand Slam title on his 2014 résumé. This isn’t some pie-in-the-sky notion either. Federer’s ascension to No. 1, while not probable, is very possible. Djokovic is scheduled to play two more tournaments this year: The BNP Paribas Masters in Paris and the year-end ATP World Tour Finals. Federer is scheduled to play those same tournaments, in addition to a 500-level event in his hometown of Basel. If Federer can advance deep into each of his tournaments, while outlasting Djokovic at in Paris andLondon, he could easily finish the year at No. 1. But will he? There are hundreds of different scenarios and none should be taken for granted. Remember, Federer saved five match points in his opening match against Leonardo Mayer last week in Shanghai, then went on to win the tournament. If any of those points went Mayer’s way, Federer is still No. 3 in the

world and Djokovic is cruising to another year-end No. 1. As such, this could all end very quickly. If Federer loses in the opening round in Paris while Djokovic takes the title, the race is over before it begins. Then again, if Federer wins out, he passes Djokovic no matter what results the Serbian has. But these are extreme (though not impossible) examples. This post attempts to build the likeliest, most realistic, road map for how Federer could become the improbable yearend No. 1. Federer has made the finals in his last eight appearances in Basel, going 37-3 overall with five titles. Assuming Djokovic doesn’t add anything to his schedule (and with his wife expecting their first child in the coming weeks, that’s a fair assumption), Federer is earning free points in Basel. How many will he get? History says he’s good for at least the 300 points given to the runnerup, as he hasn’t been ousted before the final since 2003. With Rafael Nadal on the other side of the draw, Federer’s path shouldn’t be difficult, but it could involve seeing fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the semifinals. Though finishing No. 1 isn’t dependent on a title in Basel, it’s part of the most plausible path. So we’ll give Federer the Basel title and see what happens.
