COMMUNITY SPREAD FORCES TOUGHER COVID-19 MEASURES S

trong evidence of community spread of COVID-19, including more young children being infected, has forced government to implement tougher measures to stem the spread of the virus. Minister of Health Hon. Jamell Robinson said all patrons of bars and nightclubs must be full-vaccinated effective September 1st, 2021, the same date from which there must be no events at hotels, restaurants and bars with more than 50 persons without the approval of the Chief Medical Officer or Chief Environmental Health Officer. “Based on the displays and where these breaches of protocols are taking place right now, they are the primary locations. They might not be the only locations but they are definitely the primary locations,” Robinson said during a national press conference of Wednesday, August 25th. “Unfortunately, the innocent ends up suffering for the guilty, because there are some establishments that follow the law and enforce the protocols, but we can’t pick and choose...so to ensure that we minimise the chance of spread, the capacity has to go back down....It’s about risk management.” Meantime, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nadia Astwood, the last week has been a “particularly challenging time” for health officials, with six persons with COVID-19 being “severely ill” and had to be flown overseas on “emergency transfers” , placing the hospital “under considerable stress”. Dr. Astwood said 20 percent of the cases in July were unlinked. “That means that we cannot find an association with recent travel or with other positives that we are aware of. This development is extremely concerning as it likely indicates community spread, and that there are persons in the community who are infected and are not aware of it and therefore may inadvertently be spreading the virus to others.”
