OBAMA WILL VISIT TURKS AND CAICOS U

S President Barack Obama says he will “absolutely” visit the Turks and Caicos Islands after he leaves office. The president gave that assurance while answering a question from a young Turks and Caicos Islander Katrina King-Smith during a town Hall with Young Leaders of the Americas at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Kingston Jamaica, on April 9th. Katrina King-Smith said: “ I’m from the Turks and Caicos Islands. My question is two-part, as well. Firstly, in countries such as the Turks and Caicos Islands where the population is small and our main sources of revenue are tourism and foreign direct investment, I was wondering if you can suggest two ways that the government may better generate and regulate sustainable revenue, especially with regulations currently being put in place to close off-shore financial centers. Carnival coming ton Turks and Caicos Islands this summer By Vivian Tyson

Senior Sun Editor Summer in the Turks and Caicos Islands is about to get much more frolicking with the planning of the “We Carnival” set for July 31 to August 3 on Providenciales. Daryll Williams or ‘Mr. We’, of We Entertainment, said that the fourday event is designed to showcase the talent of the country but also serve as a pulling card for fun-seeking tourists looking for summer entertainment. The first day of the event, according to Williams, will kick-off on the Friday with a J’ouvert-style offering, entitled ‘Break of Dawn’. The event continues on the Saturday with ‘Road Madness - Challenge Me’, which is slated to involve costumes and a float parade. Schools are also invited to take part. Williams said that he is looking for the We Carnival to become an annual event and the biggest entertainment event in the country. He said that there will be five float bands each representing the following islands Salt Cay, Grand Turk, North Caicos,

The Monday – the final day of the event – is called ‘The Cool-off ’, which is to be held on the beach, where the winners of the various events will be revealed. Williams explained that the event’s planning has almost been a year in the making. “It is a nine-month project planning, we are setting out to bring back carnival in the Turks and Caicos. Caribbean Cruisin’ spending $150,000 on new North Caicos dock By Vivian Tyson

Senior Sun Editor Caribbean Cruisin’ is to invest at least $150,000 at the Bellfield Landing Dock in North Caicos as the ferry service seeks to relocate from its present Sandy Point berthing spot because of sand problems accessing that location. Algie Missick, one of the partners for Caribbean Cruisin’ told The SUN that more than $100,000 has already been spent on the approximately quarter acre of land it leased from government through Port Authority, which owns the land. He said that Caribbean Cruisin, in addition to putting in a dock, is to construct an office facility to include bathrooms and shade for its customers. “We went through the planning procedure. We have built a small office complex there on the property. We already have power there, we are just waiting for Fortis to

remove their (underwater) cable so that we can access the property by our two vessels,” Missick said. “Missick said that Fortis has indicated that it would remove the underwater power cable sometime this month. He said though that if the light and power company takes longer to remove the cable, Caribbean Cruisin’ has alternative plans to access Algie Misick the dock, but said it would cost more money. That plan, Point as an entrance into he said, is to extend the dock North Caicos. Sometimes the boats operators have to make sharp turns just to navigate to get into the port. And so, we made a decision to address the Port Authority, who owns the land at Bellfield Landing, for a long-term lease on not even half acres of land to build a slip that Caribbean Cruisin’ can use, instead of making all those dangerous turns to enter the dock there at Sandy Point.” Missick was quick to allay fears by boaters at Bellfield Landing that Caribbean Cruisin’ may begin charging them fees for docking at the location after years of free access. “The government has not given any rights to exercise any fees on anyone. Those individuals who have their boats tied up on the slip they can use their slip. All we are doing is to use the facility

He said there has been increase traffic, especially tourist to North Caicos over the past year, and so, the ferry service has been taking all the necessary steps to ensuring safety off all its passengers, local and foreign. “We have increased traffic into North Caicos, which means that sometimes at 9:30 (a.m.) we have to use two vessels to get into North Caicos,” he Missick said. With access to Bellfield Landing, Missick said that the North Caicos arrival time could cut short by five to seven minutes depending on the weather.

Forty Haitian migrants feared dead in shipwreck coming to TCI As many as 40 Haitian migrants were feared dead after their ship bound for the Turks and Caicos Islands capsized in the Caribbean off Haiti’s north coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Friday. At least 21 dead bodies have been recovered since the ship went down early on Thursday morning, according to the Haitian government. “The Haitian Coast Guard rescued 12 survivors but advised that 19 were still missing,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew joined the search on Friday morning, scouring Haiti’s north coast between the cities of Cap

The Haitian government said the ship, a sailboat freighter carrying about 50 passengers headed for the Turks and Caicos Islands, sank near the coastal town of Le Borgne on the north coast. The boat apparently tried to turn back due to high seas and ran aground on a reef, the Haitian government said in a statement. Big Blue lends supports to Community Angel Foundation By Vivian Tyson

Senior Sun Editor Diving excursion company Big Blue Unlimited is the latest in what is shaping to be a long list of backers of the Community Angel Foundation – a charitable organization designed to offer undergrad degree scholarships to deserving local students. Early Saturday Morning before taking their clients to sea, all the staff members of Big Blue Unlimited showed their support for the non-profit organization by donning Community Angel Foundation t-shirts for a photo op. During the event, Community Angel Foundation’s first recipient Maxine Missick was on hand to thank Big Blue for their support of her. Missick will be attending Keele University to study Biochemistry. Mark Parrish of Big Blue Unlimited told the media that he readily went on board after Bryan related what he and the organization was trying to achieve. “Dean came to Big Blue a couple of weeks ago to introduce us to the Community Angel Foundation, and he has been persuading us that the education of persons in this country is

It is something that we felt we could get behind. First off, Maxine will be going to the UK to further her education, and we couldn’t wish her better,” Parrish said. Explaining why she chose to major in Biochemistry, Missick expressed a great deal of love for the sciences, which he said he wanted to pursue as a career. “Science just provides me with

that greater challenge – sleepless nights – so I felt like this is a challenge worth taking,” Missick said, adding that she is also looking to play her role in science both locally and internationally. In the meantime, Bryan said that he has developed a passion for education of especially the young people of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and with the church and the business community’s help, that passion will continue to bear fruit. “I would say it is a divine instruction from God, where I had a vision, and I see the need for education

And so, with the assistance from the churches and corporate sponsors, we were able to give Maxine a scholarship, and also investing in Turks and Caicos youth. “And we hope that in the future we can have more children leaving the islands through scholarships from the Community Angel Foundation. ‘Skip’ taking JAGS’ values to his new PDA party

By Vivian Tyson

Senior Sun Editor Saying that the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) has turned its back on the values of chief founder and National Hero JAGS McCartney, Oswald Skippings, fellow founder and former Chief Minister, has decided to take those standards to the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA). Samuel Harvey, former minister of government, feels the same, as both men gave an interview with The SUN. Asked whether or not they could have remained in the PDM and played similar role, Skippings replied: “If that was the case we would still be in the party. People have changed the vision that McCartney and myself and Louis Astwood and others had when we formed the People’s Democratic Movement. Turks and Caicos Islanders first, representation, a better way of living, empowerment of our people and equal rights and justice – those were the values.” However, he said that from 2003, the PDM began to erode and trample on in the values. “Every time I tried to preserve them and re-emphasized them I got sidelined. The room is there but you can’t enter the room. That causes me to revisit my position in the country,” Harvey said. Harvey told The SUN that had he not answer the call to reenter elective politics, God would hold him accountable. “God will hold me responsible if I turned my back on this just cause. So I decide that I would team up with Mr. Skippings because we worked well together in the past, and a lot of things that are working well in the country, we brought them to fruition. We know this country inside out. I don’t anyone who knows this country better than we do from a political standpoint. “So I found myself asking God what should I do. He will use you as an instrument’. And that’s my message,” Harvey said.

Burglary getting out of hand on Provo

It appears that the level of house breaking on Providenciales has reached crisis proportion, with a number of persons reporting that their houses were broken into over the past week. Some of the victims, in addition to reporting the matter to the police, have also taken to social media to highlight their plights. A number of victims said that their dwellings were broken into over the Easter Weekend, in some instances while they were in church. Since one victim took to Facebook on Wednesday to report that their house was broken into and valuable items stolen, many others came out to tell of their predicament as well. The first victim wrote: “Our house was broken into this morning... Please if you come across a MacBook, a MacBook Air, an Apple iPad with blue Coach case, a Cannon printer/scanner, Citizen blue men’s watch, a Michael Kors silver watch, a Playstation 3, an Apple TV, Red Gill Foul Weather Coat, a Dakine black suitcase. PM me, please if you see items like these! Thank you, and lock up.” A number of sympathizers were shocked to hear of the haul the crooks

made on the householders dwelling. One of them wrote: “Jesus Christ! They have no heart! These animals behave as if people don’t work for what they have. So sorry to hear, hope you get some of those items back.” Another victim said that the crooks broke in a house occupied by her spouse about a week ago while he slept and removed a number of items, some of which they managed to recover. “The other day someone broke into my boyfriend’s place while he was sleeping and stole a number of items. Just as they picked up the computer, he got up and chased them. The thieves here are bold and would try to rob any and everyone. They must be stopped. I was fortunate they caught my mugger. A woman wrote on the social media site that she almost fell victim to the pair of burglars in an early morning incident. “Last Saturday I got up at 5 o’clock because I heard the dogs and I saw through my curtains a shade of somebody. I woke up my boyfriend and he saw two tall persons ran to go in the wood behind the house. They thought that nobody was inside. I think they

Dr. Lise Cloutier Chiropractic Care Patient Miracles By Todeline Defralien

It was a great surprise to have been scrolling down my Facebook page and come across a video of a miracle work that happened inside of Dr. Lise Cloutier’s office. And I was more than happy to speak with her and find out more about the video. It was a little about five-year-old who could not walk, but after a week with Dr. Lise he started walking again. Meeting with Dr. Lise in her office I had the opportunity to sit down with her and she briefly told me more about that case. Dr, Lise Cloutier, with 20 years experience as a graduate from The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College is the owner of Courtyard Chiropractic, a full service Wellness Centre focused on helping people from all ages enhance their health naturally through chiropractic care, healthy lifestyle modifications, nutrition and massage therapy. “What a patient can expect the first time going is first they are going to do a thorough health history, do a thorough physical assessment and we’re also going to do a neurological scans. I have advanced technology that can show us the stress in the nervous system. Patients can also expect to get orthopedic, neurological tests,” she said. “We often send people for x-rays because it’s going to show us just how long the problem has been there. My job is to restore the proper alignment to get the full stress off the nervous system.” One of her miracle patients is Jovan McIntosh, the 12-year-old boy who is now walking after 5 years in a wheel chair. He was walking as an infant and then he had a tumor on his kidney and they removed the tumor, and then the tumor came back, so then they did a chemo therapy. Dr. Cloutier said: “Most people

Dr, Lise Cloutier do not realize that chemos are strong chemicals that are designed to kill off the tumor cells but they also impact all cells of the body. Since the kidneys are close to the spine, it appears the chemo may have caused chemical stress to the nervous system.” She added: “We all know that the brain is the computer of the body. It is there to generate all the information that makes every cell, organs and tissue run and operate and coordinate with each other. Within the body the brain becomes the spinal cord and these twenty four bones are here to house and protect the spinal cord, and the spinal nerves. Most of the unwanted problems that people suffer with these days occur when these bones shift out of their healthy positions. There are three things that will impact the spinal cord and spine nerves they are: Physical stress, Chemical stress, mental/emotional stress.” She continued: “At the end of the day, we live our life through our nervous

system and everything that happens to us physically, mentally, emotionally and chemically is recorded on the nervous system. Chemical stress can be strong medications that you take for an illness. It can be when you have to go to surgery and the doctor gives you on anesthetic in preparation for a surgical procedure.” She added: “Physical stress also impact the nervous system. Now what we are seeing is what I call the computer ‘posture syndrome’ of the twenty first century. People are sitting at computers all day and they are typing with poor posture. And children are playing games on their iPad, texting on their phones and sitting head forward while the daily poor posture habits are gradually shifting and changing the proper alignment of the spine which will eventually result in tension and stress on the nervous system. Over time, these impacts our health as the brain is designed to send the proper information and the human body is designed to self heal and self regulate and express one hundred percent optimal health as long as there are no interferences with your information highway, that being your spine.” The expertise of doctors of chiropractic care is to restore proper mobility and alignment to the spine vertebrate in order to restore brain body communication allowing healthy restoration. Dr. Lise also mentioned two other very interesting local cases of two young girls of two and a half years old that suffered trauma from birth. They were diagnosed as developmentally delayed and are now taking their first steps. One patient could not walk, talk, sit and couldn’t do anything for herself is now moving her arms and legs and she’s now smiling and focusing her

eyes, The parents of the little girl noted that she is now rolling over and she’s getting on her hands and knees and start to try to attempting to crawl. Jovan McIntosh, the 12 yr old boy who is now walking after 5 years in a wheel chair, Keanna and Celita, two 2.5 years old who are making great progress with their developmental and all three are local patients from the Turks and Caicos Islands (Provo). Dr. Lise is also highly involved in her profession and she Co-authored a book in 2010 which is called “Pearls of Wisdom-Pure and Powerful”, with contributions, from 19 internationally recognized female Doctors of Chiropractic. Dr. Lise wrote chapter 4. It tells about another wonderful, chiropractic healing miracle about a little Russian boy. The eleven year old boy could not speak but after chiropractic care to align the bone vertebrate in his neck; it restored nerve supply to the vocal cords and restored this young boy’s ability to speak again in time. I’ve also learned in speaking with Dr. Lise that chiropractic care is not just for back pain. She said: “Our theme this month is headaches and migraines, with the vertebrate on top of the neck are misaligned it’s going to affect the nerves that goes back inside the brain and attached to the blood vessels and so the blood vessels can’t dilate and constrict based on the demands of the body and it’s going to lead to headaches or migraines, and so we get phenomenal results with all sorts of conditions not just back pain and neck pain. Her practice was recently relocated from the Courtyard Plaza to the lovelier, more “Zen like: Courtyard at La Vista Azul in Turtle Cove. Dr. Lise can be contacted for consultations at 339-1000 or by e-mail at courtyardchiro@me.com.

Prisoners threaten to crash plane

A Number of passengers on a flight from Providenciales to Grand Turk on Wednesday afternoon (April 8, 2015) said they became fearful when two prisoners being transported to Her Majesty’s Prison became boisterous hurling threats at them. The two prisoners, who The SUN learned were among a trio juveniles accused of setting a section of the prison on fire about two weeks ago, attended the Magistrate’s Court on Providenciales to answer to robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm charges. The media was prevented from sitting on the matter because they are minors. The two men’s behavior raised concerns from some members of the travelling public as to whether or not prisoners, even though in cuffs, should be allowed to travel with members of

the public. A passenger on the flight said that the two young men began acting out long before boarding the flight, often seen in intense arguments with the prisoner officers assigned to usher them to court and back. “I have never been so fearful in my life,” said a female prisoner. “If it was car, I would ask the driver to stop and let me out. Their behaviour was scary.” Another passenger on the flight said that the juveniles’ series of boisterous behaviour began at the Providenciales International Airport. “Coming through the airport there was one scene with the men and members of the public. They issued a lot of threats to anyone they could threaten. When they came on the plane they threatened the passengers and threatening to crash the plane; they

were carrying on real bad all through the airport and on the plane,” one terrified passenger revealed. A source said that the men carried their rowdy behaviour to the prison that evening, where one of them was alleged to have attacked one prison officer at the gate, leaving him with a bloody nose. A source at the prison said that the youngsters decided to behave the way they did as a reaction to what they termed as ill-treatment at the facility. “They said that the first chance they got to make the public know how they were being treated in prison, they will take it. But I think they are going about it the wrong way, to the point of threatening to crash the plane and threatening passengers on it. I don’t think that is a wise way to win the sympathy of the public.

The source said that since they were accused of setting fire to a section of the building, prison authorities have placed them under strict movement, allowing them about an hour a day from their cells. “Some days they were only allowed to shower and return to their cells. And so, they said that any opportunity that they can get to retaliate and get some sympathy from the public they will take it,” the source said. The source said that so far, no one has been charged with the arson incident at the prison, which landed about three persons in hospital, including at least one of the juveniles, for smoke inhalation. The SUN understands that one of the juvenile is to return to court sometime in May for a sufficiency hearing in his robbery charge.

Progressive Democratic Alliance ready to launch By Vivian Tyson

Senior Sun Editor The Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA), which could prove to be the country’s strongest third party yet, is to launch within the next month, according to convener former Chief Minister Oswald Skippings. Skippings, who led the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) into the 2012 elections in a narrowlylosing cause to the ruling Progressive National Party (PNP), insisted that the PDA will be an all inclusive party, which will not only welcome persons of all political affiliations, but nationalities as well. “The PDA is an all-embracing, a party that is here to represent, a party that is here to make meaningful change, national change, a party that is here to empower our people and protect the rights of everyone in this country,” Skippings said. He said that there are a number of prominent persons who expressed interest in becoming candidate for the next general elections, constitutionally due late next year. So far, Samuel Harvey, former minister in the former PDM administration has broken ranks to join u up with Skippings. Both visited The SUN’s office to give the interview. Skippings said that the party’s constitution has already been written

and to be ratified soon. He said that while the PDA’s platform is prepared, it will base primarily on making investor-friendly policies, addressing the immigration issue in terms of illegal migrants and longstanding residents without statuses, unity of different nationals residing here, work closely with the private sector, up-to-date the social services especially in the outer islands, ensure Belonger participation in government contracts, develop a salvage programme for persons losing homes and focusing on young people’s welfare. “This is a party of unity. We need to get the blacks, whites, Jamaicans, Haitians, everybody who has a stake here, so that we work together, we live together, we build together because we have come of age now that we understand that this is a cosmopolitan setting, and so we must be mature, but we must ensure that Turks and Caicos Islanders get their share of the pie,” Skippings asserted. He said also that the PDA would also seek to prepare the people for independence, so they would be able to pursue it when they believe they are ready. Skippings said that while the PDA could be classified as the new kid on the block, the same could not be said of some of its founding members, who he said have years of experience

in representational politics, and have proven worthy. “I myself and Samuel Harvey, who is one of the more seasoned politicians who came out of the PDM. God has directed us, and so, we thank God for the opportunity to be given this opportunity, whatever it costs us. It doesn’t matter to me whatever it cost me; it is my commitment, I have a spiritual obligation to step forward, step out and try and save this land,” Skippings said. The party convener told The SUN that he is relishing in remarkable support that has been coming from the public so far. “I would not say the feedback from the public is not surprisingly, but pleasantly overwhelming. The feedback is tremendous. About 80 percent of the people who we have made contact with have made it clear that they are not going out there blowing their horn, saying that they were not going to go to the polls that was their position. ‘We were not going to the polls,’ they say, ‘for either side because we were frustrated, there is no representation, there seems to be no hope, we are losing ground daily’. “They are saying to me that this (PDA) is a breath of fresh air and we embrace this, and thank God, we know that we have here is known commodity; we know Samuel Harvey, we know Oswald Skippings, we know

their track record in government. “We know what they have done, we know what they could do, we know their passion. We know that once we call them, whether it’s in Parrot Cay or North Caicos or Providenciales, whether it’s a hotel or a job site and we have a problem, we know that they are willing to come and sit down with those persons responsible and sorted out and represent our people. So, it is that sort of confidence and relief that this is a new party but it is not an untested product,” Skippings explained. He said that young people are also on board with the PDA, explaining that they are comfortable with what it is offering. “The young people don’t have the luxury like one or two of the older heads of counting a party, in other words, this is a third party or a fifth party, it doesn’t work. They don’t have that luxury anymore. Numbers don’t matter. “What they are looking at is not the number of party but the number of work permit holders who are taking the jobs that are taking; the number of rejections that when they go look for a job; the number of Turks and Caicos Islanders who are unemployed; the number of people who are losing their homes - these are the numbers they are concerned with,” he said.

LOCAL NEWS Christie Brinkley jetted to hospital after suffering injury in Turks and Caicos while ‘trying to save a bird’ Christie Brinkley shows off a nasty black eye she suffered while trying to help a bird at a resort in Turks and Caicos over the weekend, which was in Parrot Cay over the Easter Holiday. By Todeline Defralien Christie Brinkley was flown to a Miami hospital from Turks and Caicos Islands over Easter weekend after she suffered a nasty black eye and gash on the face in an accident while allegedly trying to save a bird. The 61-year-old supermodel’s flawless face was marred by a puffy shiner and cut next to her left eyebrow in the mysterious incident that happened while she was staying at the exclusive Parrot Cay resort. “We interrupt this holiday to take a little unplanned excursion to Miami for cat scans and stitches following an accident trying to save a bird,” Brinkley wrote Monday on Instagram along with some selfies showing her nursing the injury with an ice pack and being tended to by a grinning doctor flashing a thumbs-up sign. The “Vacation” star went on to thank the resort’s staff for getting her aboard a boat and then a plane to University of Miami Hospital for treatment. Christie Brinkley was born Christie Lee Hudson; February 2, 1954 is an American model and actress. Brinkley gained worldwide fame beginning in

the late 1970s with three consecutive Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue covers through 1981. She spent twenty five years as the face of Cover Girl (the longest running cosmetics contract of any model in history), has appeared on over 500 magazine covers, and has signed contracts with major brands both fashion and non-fashion. Brinkley went on to work as a film actress, illustrator, television personality, photographer, writer, and designer, and as an activist for human and animal rights and the environment. Brinkley has been married four times, most notably to musician Billy Joel, several of whose music videos she appeared in. Her fourth marriage, to architect Peter Cook, ended in a muchpublicized 2008 divorce. With a career spanning more than three decades, magazines such as Allure, Playboy, and Men’s Health have named Brinkley one of the most attractive women of all time. Her financial holdings in 2008 were worth an estimated USD $80 million, primarily as the owner of real estate. In February 2012 she was ranked third in the Daily Mail list “World’s 20 richest models.”

Josephine Connolly, and of course, also present was the man behind the initiative himself, the Premier, Dr. Ewing and the First Lady, Dr. Dawn Perry. The initial meeting of January last year, took place at the Crackpot Kitchen and was originally planned for about thirty persons, but was attended by some seventy-odd vibrant and energetic young men and women, who were overcome with gratitude and appreciation for the bold and refreshing direction the Ewing Administration took by focusing on this very powerful, but largely overlooked, sector of the

community. The then attendees were all registered in a database at the event and the group conveyed their enthusiasm and gratitude by hosting their first elections that very night for the offices of Chairman and other executives and it was there that Mr. Kyle Smith emerged as the group’s leader and Chairman and his other elected officers were Mr. Jerrel Lowe, Ms. Angie Toussaint, Mr. Sean Bassett, Mr. Dominic Rolle and Ms. Crystal Charles. Like all newly embarked endeavours, the infancy stage was met with minor set-backs, but through the efforts of the staff of the Office of the Premier and the determination of Mr. Smith and his team, progress meetings and pep talks kept the dream alive and not to be side-tracked, the Young Corporate Alliance overcame the nursery challenges of time and commitment and over the past thirteen months remained steadfast to achieving the challenge issued to them by the Premier. It is therefore with pride that the Office of the Premier and the entire Government extends congratulations to the Chairman, Mr. Smith, the executive officers and the entire YCA on the occasion of your launch and we further extend our profound gratitude for being bold enough to see and believe the dream, shared with you months ago and for making it a reality today.

The Making of a Hero By: Jamell R. Robinson It has been about two months since the late Hon. Dr. Rosita B. Butterfield was laid to rest on the 5th February, 2015 following a State Funeral, and it is with great humility that I write this article after a long layoff, not as her Grandson, but an engaged Turks and Caicos Islander. I write to make the case, or should I say state the obvious, that Dr. Butterfield should be the Turks and Caicos Islands next National Hero. Many have had the thought but few have voiced it publicly, save for Dr. Lillian Boyce in her closing remarks at the memorial service held in Dr. Butterfield’s honor. Looking at this case, neither emotionally nor politically biased, but critically, there is no doubt that she is worthy of such an honor. By any measure, real, imagined or even yet to be imagined, she passes the litmus test. In my view the following are some of the qualities which should be displayed by a National Hero: Leadership; Integrity; Courage; Honor; Longevity; Service to country; and lastly he/she should be someone whom most people would themselves aspire to be like or have as a role model for their children. Dr. Butterfield possessed all of these qualities.

As speaker of the House of Assembly, she ruled with integrity and impartiality, to the point where some of the more junior members of her very own party treated her with disdain at house sittings. She would end her tenure as speaker early rather than compromise her moral standing because of others. Also, under her leadership as chairman of the select committee on the Employment Bill from 1987 to 1988, she and her team would shape positive employment trends still having its impact today. Both locally and internationally, Dr. Butterfield represented the spirit of her country on numerous occasions, be it in Bermuda where she presented on “Migration and Immigration in the Turks and Caicos Islands” or in the House of Lords or the Isle of Man as a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Her Leadership qualities were well recognized and unquestionable. Want someone who illustrated their belief in education? She maximized all education opportunities afforded her and won numerous nursing awards such as the Surgeons’ Prize for the most efficient operating theatre surgical student nurse. She would not only use her time to develop education within the TCI but

Jamell R. Robinson also to put her money where her mouth was by sponsoring our National Spelling Bee for many years plus giving financial help to numerous families. Besides, Dr. Butterfield and her husband’s role in the development of Providenciales and wider TCI by extension, has been far reaching and can easily be verified. So much has already been written about Dr. Butterfield’s tremendous contribution in service to our country that I need not repeat it here. Click:www.sppdtci.com for more

John Wildish In wake of recently released photos via the internet of young teens especially exposing themselves on stills and motion picture cameras, John Wildish, one of the TCI’s prominent individuals, is calling on police commissioner James Smith to investigate cable television offering. Saying it is good news, the move by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force to bring charges against anyone found to be distributing pornography of especially local teens, Wildish, in a letter to The SUN, said that cable television is one of the prime propagators of pornography. “In line with this development, I am taking the time to point our new Commissioner James Smith and his team in the direction of the largest sellers and distributors of pornography on our island, namely the television stations and TV cable operators, who, for a few dollars a month, will provide live streaming of porn right into the homes of the innocent people of the Turks and Caicos Islands so as to corrupt their minds with this material. That is clearly illegal in this jurisdiction as your newspaper just explained,”

wildish said. Wildish said that it is welcoming that the police have now decided to begin tackling the problem after what he described as years of inaction. “This is good news in that it appears that finally our police force, after years of inaction in this area, have decided to awake from their self-induced coma and take action. I encourage Commissioner Smith and his team to take prompt action and investigate this hot lead so as to shut down this illegal activity that is occurring right under their noses and is corrupting our beautiful islands with her good people,” Wildish said. Recently, a series of pornographic materials, both video and stills, bombarded the internet. The materials were said to have been released and shared by unscrupulous persons within the community, including other teens. The material contained both children and adults. They only ceased after the police warned the public that anyone known to be in possession of or have been distributing them would be prosecuted.

St. Lucia Government hoping for major economic boost As the St. Lucia government prepares to present the national budget to the country, Prime Minister Kenny Anthony says he plans to make a considerable dent in the rising unemployment levels though a major boost in the construction sector. Unemployment currently stands at 25 per cent with the figures among young people running substantially higher. Anthony, who also has responsibility for Finance, has promised that the 2015/2016 budget will be a “remedial” fiscal package, with new investment in construction. “One of the weaknesses in our budget performance in the last three years has been the weakening of the performance in the construction

sector, so the government is putting more money into construction,” Prime Minister Anthony said in a radio interview. He noted that there was already investment in road infrastructure, including the Gros Islet Choc highway project, to be financed by the Kuwaiti Investment Fund. The government here is desperate for a turnaround in the country’s economic performance, having recorded a deficit in each of its three years since taking up office in 2011. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Anthony spoke of seeing some ‘shoots’ of success in the economic recovery effort and pointed mainly to an increase in tourism arrivals and some level of investment coming into the country.

Cuba says US companies won’t get preferential treatment

Rodrigo Malmierca, the minister of foreign trade and investment U.S. companies can expect the same treatment as those from the rest of the world, receiving neither special benefits nor punishment, if there is a further commercial opening between Cuba and the United States, Cuba’s foreign trade minister said. “U.S. business people will enjoy the same treatment that is offered to the rest of the world that has ties with the island today,” Rodrigo Malmierca, the minister of foreign trade and investment, said in an interview published

in official Cuban media on Monday. “It’s true that we will view positively, once the U.S. laws permit it, that they will be able to trade and invest. But that does not imply a preferential treatment,” Malmierca said. The United States and Cuba announced in December they would restore diplomatic relations and seek to normalize trade and travel that were disrupted more than 50 years ago during the Cold War. U.S. President Barack Obama has relaxed some parts

of the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba. Although he has authority to do more, he needs the Republican-controlled Congress to remove the embargo definitively. The opening has generated tremendous interest from U.S. companies looking to crack a market that has long been closed, but even with a relaxation of the embargo U.S. companies need an agreement from the Cuban government or a Cuban state company to do business on the Caribbean island.

The Prime Minister asserted that while tourism has done “exceedingly well”, the problem has been the construction sector. “As you know, construction is a key employer of labour,” he said At the same time, Anthony noted that the government also has to address the outstanding issue of the deficit. In presenting last year’s budget Prime Minister Anthony said the objectives were to set the country’s economy on a path of higher and sustained growth and employment, create sustainable, fulfilling jobs, particularly among the youth, steer the country’s finances away from the fiscal cliff, and build resilience so that the country and bounce back faster from future economic and natural shocks.

Jamaica to export peppers and dasheen to Trinidad KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica has signed an agreement allowing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country to export pepper and dasheen to oil rich Trinidad and Tobago. Junior Agriculture Minister Luther Buchanan, said the agreement was reached at the CARICOM level for the export of the crops, describing the accord as “a win-win” for both countries. He said the move is in keeping with efforts by the Government to increase exports to CARICOM markets. Buchanan said farmers in St. Ann had produced approximately 55,348 tonnes of domestic crops last year despite being adversely affected by one

of the worst droughts that the country has ever experienced. “St Ann, which is described as the Garden Parish… has over 18,000 registered farmers producing crops such as pimento, yam, sweet potato, corn, and a wide variety of vegetables as well as livestock farmers who rear cattle, goats and pigs… I commend you for the significant contribution you have made to feeding our nation and to food security,” he said. He noted that the agricultural sector contributes seven per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides employment for 18 per cent of the labour force.

Digicel Cayman CEO sees room for growth

The chief executive officer of Digicel Cayman, in an interview with the Cayman Compass, said the country’s diverse population presents unique challenges for the mobile phone carrier. Martin Bould, 42, arrived in Cayman six months ago to lead Digicel’s local operations. The broader Digicel Group puts Cayman in the same category as Bermuda and Turks and Caicos, with more wealthy people, better infrastructure and a higher standard of living than most countries in the region. Some people want the latest high-end cellphones and data plans while others are just looking for an easy, inexpensive prepaid phone, he said. There are many “high net worth users” in Cayman, he said, who want to buy the newest technology. “Historically,” he said, the company has been “overly focused on

pre-pay.” Mr. Bould said he was surprised by how many types of customers fit into such a small population here. The products the company has to have available to suit people from the Philippines, Jamaica, the United States or Europe are all different. He said the company needs to offer “all options for all segments.” Before leaving his native England, Mr. Bould spent more than 15 years in the telecom industry there. He spent nine years with Vodafone before moving to 02, the two largest British telecoms. His experience with the two companies involved mainly sales and marketing. Mr. Bould’s move to Cayman puts him at the top of one of the country’s two mobile phone carriers, and doing business here has meant making some adjustments. He said working here is much more personal, more about who

you know and getting out and meeting people. There have been other adjustments too as he learns more about Digicel’s operations in Cayman. Mr. Bould said the number of people who want to go to the physical store to pay a bill is “one of the biggest challenges” he’s working on. While it is customary in the U.K. or the U.S. to pay a bill online, long wait times are no surprise in Digicel’s Cayman stores, and Mr. Bould said the in-person bill pay is a big part of that. He said he hopes the company can change how customers use the stores, which tends to be a negative experience, for example to pay a bill or fix a phone problem. Digicel plans to move its George Town store out of the downtown area to a new building this summer. The current downtown store has no

Man Charged With Assault In Connection With Social Media Video

Brent McPhee outside court in The Bahamas A man faces up to three years imprisonment if convicted at trial of aggravated assault concerning an alleged incident that was videotaped and shared on social media. Brent McPhee, 27, of Oleander Street appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon and threats of death allegedly committed on April 4. The victim is Arthur Buchanan. While the latter charge is considered a misdemeanour and can warrant imprisonment for one month, the aggravated assault charge carries up to three years imprisonment. It is claimed that McPhee intentionally assaulted Mr Buchanan with a knife and further threatened to kill him. McPhee pleaded not guilty to both offences and opted to be tried in Magistrate’s Court. On the question of bail, police prosecutor Sgt Audrey Deveaux said she was objecting to a bond for the accused on the basis that the Central Detective Unit was still investigating him and were expecting to

bring additional charges and suspects to court concerning the matter. She added that McPhee would likely interfere with the ongoing investigation. The prosecutor also said she did not know if the accused had any prior convictions. McPhee informed the court that his lawyer Ian Cargill was supposed to appear on his behalf. When the lawyer appeared and was briefed on the issue, Mr Cargill said there was no grievous harm or attempted murder charges stemming from the video that has already been viewed by a large number of persons. He said there was no reason his client could not be granted bail and be electronically monitored ahead of trial. Magistrate McKinney replied that with recent amendments to the Bail Act, he is compelled to defer the question of bail. He set a bail hearing for April 15 and remanded McPhee to the Department of Correctional Services until that time.

Police officer dismissed after shooting man in back

Michael Scott was shot eight times by police officer Michael Slager A white South Carolina police officer has been fired after being charged with murder for shooting a black man in the back as he fled, but questions remained on Wednesday about some details of the killing that was filmed by a witness. The shooting occurred on Saturday in North Charleston, a town of about 100,000 people, nearly half of whom are black, but it gained national media attention on Tuesday when the video became public. The incident was recorded by a man identified by NBC News as Feidin Santana. In an interview with the network, he said the victim, 50-yearold Walter Scott, had been hit by the officer’s stun gun before fleeing to avoid further stun gun fire. The video, which Santana said he gave to Scott’s family, shows a brief scuffle between Scott and police officer Michael Slager, 33, before Scott runs. Slager is then seen taking aim with a

New York man gets life in prison after rap lyrics used as evidence An accused New York City gang member was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for a slew of violent crimes, including three murders, after being convicted in a trial in which prosecutors used his graphic rap lyrics against him. Ronald “Ra Diggs” Herron, 33, was sentenced to 12 terms of life in prison plus 105 years by U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn, New York. The sentencing came after a jury in June 2014 found Herron guilty of all 23 charges against him, from racketeering to drug trafficking to gang-related killings between 2001 and 2009. Prosecutors at the trial used Herron’s “gangsta rap” videos - in which he boasts about belonging

to the infamous Bloods street gang, firing weapons and dealing drugs to argue the lyrics documented his crimes. Herron’s lawyers argued that the lyrics were not autobiographical, but were commentary on crime, violence and drug wars in the inner city. Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch in a statement Thursday said the life sentence would put an end to the “brutal, unrelenting violence” that Herron unleashed. “Herron styled himself a rap artist, but the evidence proved that he was a murderous thug who sought power through violence, fear and intimidation,” she said. A lawyer for Herron did not respond to a request for comment.

North Charleston, which has a 2015 budget of $105.6 million, about one-third of which goes to the police department, could end up paying out a significant amount to Scott’s family, according to legal experts. “The municipality is going to be on the hook for seven or eight figures,” said Mark Geragos, a criminal defense lawyer. “The last thing they’re going to want to do is put this in front of a jury.” Slager, who like Scott is a former member of the Coast Guard, was accus ed by a man of shooting him with a stun gun without cause in 2013, but was cleared of wrongdoing in an internal investigation. Last year, he was found to have failed to fill out an incident report, records show.

Activists want to remove California judge over abuse case sentence Activists including O.J. Simpson’s former sister-in-law launched a bid on Thursday to recall a California judge over what they say was an unconscionably light sentence he gave to a man convicted of sexually abusing a 3-year-old girl. Orange County Superior Court Judge Marc Kelly has been roundly criticized for sentencing Kevin Jonas Rojano-Nieto last week to 10 years in prison when the state statute recommends a minimum of 25 years to life behind bars. Rojano-Nieto was convicted in December of sodomizing his half-sister in the family’s Santa Ana garage after the girl wandered in while he was playing video games. Kelly, in imposing the lesser sentence, said the case was “not typical of a predatory, violent, brutal sodomy of a child case” because the

defendant did not seek out his victim. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has said he would appeal that sentence. In demanding Kelly’s recall, the activists, joined by three members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, said the judge’s ruling was inappropriate and could be used by other defendants to seek lighter sentences. “These are monsters and they deserve the maximum sentence,” said Denise Brown, whose sister, Nicole Brown-Simpson, was stabbed to death on June 12, 1994, along with her friend Ronald Goldman. Former football star turned TV pitchman O.J. Simpson was charged with those murders but ultimately acquitted during a sensational case that came to be known as the “Trial of the Century.”

Britain’s Labour takes as much as 6 percent point lead in pre-election poll Britain’s opposition Labour Party has taken the lead over Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives, according to four opinion polls less than a month before the May 7 election, with one survey showing a Labour lead of six percentage points. Neither Cameron’s Conservatives nor Ed Miliband’s Labour Party is forecast to win an overall majority in Britain’s 650-seat parliament after losing support to once fringe parties such as the Scottish National Party and the UK Independence Party. An online Panelbase poll published Thursday put Labour up 4 points on 37 percent, the Conservatives down 2 points on 31 percent, UKIP down one point on 16 percent and the Liberal Democrats up one point on 8 percent. A different online survey by polling firm Survation and conducted for the Daily Mirror newspaper gave Labour a four percentage-point lead over the Conservatives, the biggest Labour lead in a Survation poll since February. The Survation poll also showed Miliband had overtaken Cameron in terms of net personal approval ratings, the first time Miliband had outpolled Cameron since Survation began asking voters about personal approval ratings in January. The poll put support for Labour on 35 percent, up from 33 percent since the firm’s last poll on April 3, while the Conservatives dipped 1 percentage point to 31 percent. Support for the anti-EU United Kingdom Independence Party fell 3 percentage points to 15 percent, while the Liberal Democrats were unchanged at 9 percent, and the Scottish nationalists and Greens had 4 percent each, according to Survation. Opinion polls indicate the Scottish nationalists are on course to win 35-50 of the 59 Westminster seats in Scotland, up from six in 2010, giving them a potential kingmaker position in the Westminster parliament. The stakes of the election are high: If Cameron wins, he has promised a referendum on European Union membership, while Scottish nationalists have offered to shore up a future Labour minority government in the event of a hung parliament.

British Prime Minister David Cameron The Survation poll surveyed 1,111 people on Wednesday and Thursday. The Panelbase poll surveyed 1,013 people. A daily YouGov poll for The Sun newspaper published on Thursday put Labour on 35 percent, unchanged from the day before, and the Conservatives on 34 percent, up one percentage point, The Sun said. A TNS poll put Labour up one on 33 percent, the Conservatives down three points on 30 percent, UKIP up three on 19 percent and the Liberal Democrats unchanged on 8 percent. Miliband announced on Wednesday that he wanted to scrap tax rules that allow wealthy individuals to legally reduce the amount of tax they pay on money earned overseas.

UN calls for $111 million for crucial aid for North Korea LONDON - The United Nations has called for $111 million to fund crucial humanitarian needs this year in North Korea, which it said remains drastically under-funded. Funding for U.N. agencies in North Korea fell from $300 million in 2004 to less than $50 million in 2014 and the country urgently needs money for food and agriculture, health and nutrition, and water and sanitation programs, the world body said. “(North) Korea is both a silent and underfunded humanitarian situation,” Ghulam Isaczai, U.N. resident coordinator for North Korea, said in a statement released late on Wednesday. “Protracted and serious needs for millions of people are persistent and require sustained funding.” About 70 percent of North Koreans are food insecure and almost one third of children under five are stunted, the United Nations said in its report on North Korea “Humanitarian needs and priorities 2015”, released before the funding appeal. Many health facilities do not have functioning water systems and seven million people need access to clean water and proper sanitation to prevent malnutrition and reduce cases of diarrhea and other diseases, the United Nations said. Children in rural areas and those in institutions such as nurseries, kindergartens and orphanages have little access to water and sanitation, it added. About 25 percent of North Korea’s 24.62 million people still have no access to essential health services, including vaccines and basic medical treatment, the United Nations said. More than 350,000 pregnant women are at risk of common life-threatening conditions such as obstetrics complications because they have no access to essential supplies and services, it said. FOREIGN AID FEEDS THE PEOPLE North Korea’s food situation has improved since a famine in the 1990s that killed as many as one million people, but the isolated, mountainous nation lacks the farmland, high-quality seeds, fuel and fertilizer needed to feed its people and still relies on foreign aid to do so. In recent years many international donors have been reluctant to help North Korea because of Pyongyang’s restrictions on humanitarian workers and international fears over its nuclear ambitions.

Germanwings co-pilot increased speed as jet went down The pilot at the controls of a Germanwings jet that crashed in the French Alps accelerated the plane into the mountainside, killing all 150 people on board, according to French investigators. France’s BEA crash investigation agency declined to confirm growing evidence against the co-pilot before completing its own analysis, but the chilling new detail from a newly recovered second ‘black box’ seemed to corroborate prosecutors’ claims that he killed himself and everyone else deliberately. “A first reading shows that the pilot in the cockpit used the automatic pilot to put the airplane on a descent towards an altitude of 100 feet,” the BEA said in a statement. “Then several times the pilot modified the automatic pilot settings to increase the speed of the airplane as it descended.” Based on cockpit audio recordings from the first black box, recovered hours after the March 24 crash, prosecutors believe 27-year-old German co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the cockpit and veered the plane into a descent. As he barricaded himself at the

Airbus A320’s controls, he appears to have ignored efforts by his senior colleague to bash his way through the cockpit door of the 24-year-old jet, which had been reinforced under rules to protect pilots after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. The latest evidence on the plane’s speed was extracted from a charred and badly dented flight data recorder discovered among wreckage on Thursday, nine days after the worst aviation disaster in France since the 2000 Concorde crash. The box arrived at BEA headquarters outside Paris under police guard on Thursday evening and investigators immediately set to work reconstructing the last moments of flight 9525 to Duesseldorf. RELATED COVERAGE •Prosecutors search five doctors offices in Germanwings crash probe: Der Spiegel The BEA’s purely factual description of the initial data focused on the autopilot, which is governed by a set of knobs sitting on a console between the two pilots. But the brief actions described

by the BEA lent technical weight to a picture painted by prosecutors of methodical and cool-headed actions as the aircraft hurtled for eight minutes toward the ground under the control of a trained pilot. “The autopilot was reprogrammed several times to increase the speed during the descent,” a BEA spokeswoman said. ANALYZING DATA The flight data recorder monitors hundreds of parameters, including any commands made directly from the co-pilot’s seat. As well as inputs to shared controls such as the autopilot, it may record seat movements that might prove which pilot remained at the controls while the other left the cockpit. The BEA now faces the laborious task of synchronizing the flight data extracted from thermally protected memory strips with the earlier cockpit audio recordings and radar tracks. The agency’s spokeswoman said it would “days or even weeks” to finish analyzing the data.

The BEA, whose mandate is to prevent future accidents rather than attribute blame, signaled its intention earlier this week to complete its own safety investigation and deliver a final report, whatever the outcome of separate judicial probes. It said it would focus on cockpit door mechanisms and pilot screening, in a sign that it could issue recommendations that some experts say may prompt a rethink on regulation worldwide. Lubitz’s motives remain a mystery but investigators have uncovered evidence that he had made suicide preparations. German prosecutors said on Thursday that Lubitz had made Internet searches on ways to commit suicide in the days ahead of the crash as well as searches about cockpit doors and safety precautions. Germanwings parent Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) has said Lubitz told its flight school in 2009 he had gone through a period of severe depression. As part of their crash probe, German prosecutors searched the offices of five doctors whose help Lubitz had sought, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Friday.

Venezuela president sees opportunity for better US ties

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday said he saw an opportunity to improve strained ties with the United States, softening his stance toward U.S. President Barack Obama in the run-up to a hemispheric summit in Panama. The two nations historically tense relations took a turn for the worse last month when Washington slapped sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials over alleged human rights violations and declared the OPEC nation a security threat. Maduro, who has said he will protest that measure during the summit in Panama, commended Obama for saying in an interview that the United States did not in fact see Venezuela as a threat. “The statements by President

Barack Hussein Obama ... could temporarily open a door to begin a new era of historic relations between Venezuela, a free and sovereign Latin America and the empire of the United States,” Maduro said at a rally. Caracas and Washington have had frequent spats over the last 15 years, with diplomatic expulsions common during the rule of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez. Thomas Shannon, counselor to Secretary of State John Kerry, on Wednesday met with Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez in Caracas in an apparent effort to ease tensions in the run-up to the summit. “We do not believe that Venezuela poses a threat to the United States, nor does the United

States threaten the Venezuelan government,” Obama said in a written interview with EFE news in advance of his arrival in Panama. The sanctions primarily targeted Venezuelan officials who were believed to be involved in a crackdown on four months of opposition protests in 2014. They did not apply to the country as a whole. Venezuelan officials called the often violent demonstrations an effort to destabilize the country. Maduro on Thursday said more than 10 million people had signed a petition asking that Obama repeal the executive order that created the sanctions. Opposition critics have cast doubt on that figure, with some alleging that civil servants have been coerced into signing.

Other teens are taught by licensed instructors. But Malia Obama isn’t your average 16-year-old: Her driving lessons were provided by the U.S. Secret Service. Asked who taught Malia how to drive, first lady Michelle Obama told celebrity chef and daytime talk-show host Rachael Ray in an interview that it was the armed agents who provide

around-the-clock security for the family. “The Secret Service, actually, because they wouldn’t let me in the car with her,” Mrs. Obama said in an excerpt of the interview that was released by Ray’s program. The full interview is set to air Thursday. Mrs. Obama hasn’t driven herself in seven or eight years, she said. She added that driving gives Malia “a sense of normalcy,” helping her feel like the rest of her friends who are also driving. “And my kids have got to learn how to live in the world like normal kids.” When Ray says that the Obamas seem “so grounded,” the first lady replies that her “hope is just to make sure that they (her daughters) come out of this thing as functioning adults, you know?” Mrs. Obama, whose younger daughter Sasha is 13, said Malia also drives herself around Washington. “She always has security around but in order for her to learn how to drive she had to drive on her own,” the first lady said during a separate interview on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” earlier this week. “So once she was legally permitted to drive on her own, she gets in her car.”

Clinton campaign signed lease for Brooklyn HQ The campaign of likely U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has signed a lease to house its headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, a source with knowledge of Clinton’s plans said on Friday. Clinton, a former U.S. secretary of state and the wife of a former president, is expected to launch her White House bid for the 2016 election later this month. Her campaign will occupy two floors of an office building at 1 Pierrepont Plaza in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, according to the source. The identity of the lease holder on the Brooklyn space was unclear. If it is Clinton’s campaign-in-waiting, the expenditure would trigger a 15-day

window in which she must officially form her campaign. Several criteria were considered by Clinton and her future campaign staffers when selecting the Brooklyn location, the source said. First and foremost, Clinton wanted the campaign headquarters to be outside of Washington, D.C. Brooklyn Heights was chosen for its accessibility, given its proximity to multiple metro lines and easy access to the city’s airports. The availability of housing for staffers who will be relocating to the area and the perception that the neighborhood is somewhere people will enjoy spending time were also factors, the source said.

Falklands spat heats up between Britain and Argentina

Britain and Argentina’s longstanding dispute over the Falklands escalates as Buenos Aires takes legal action against companies exploring for oil off the islands and the countries summon each other’s ambassadors for a dressing-down Buenos Aires - Britain and Argentina’s longstanding dispute over the Falklands escalated Thursday as Buenos Aires took legal action against companies exploring for oil off the islands and the countries summoned each other’s ambassadors for a dressing-down. The animosity between the two capitals, which fought a brief, bloody war over the South Atlantic islands in 1982, has intensified in recent years with the discovery of significant oil deposits offshore. Adding to the bad blood in recent

weeks, Britain has announced plans to beef up its defenses on the islands because of “continuous intimidation” from Argentina, while Argentine media reports have denounced British spying aimed at blocking the South American country’s efforts to win sovereignty. In the latest throwdown, the Argentine government said it had taken legal action in a local court against three British and two US companies for “carrying out exploration activities for fossil fuels on the Argentine continental shelf without obtaining the corresponding authorization.”

Big oil deposit near London airport, but will be hard to tap LONDON - A British energy company says there is oil, and lots of it, near London’s Gatwick Airport. The question is how much of it can be pumped from the ground. UK Oil & Gas Investments PLC says analysis of a new well in the Weald Basin indicates there may be as much as 158 million barrels of oil per square mile in the region. That suggests the entire basin may hold as much as 100 billion barrels of oil, more than 10 times earlier estimates. By comparison, Britain has pumped about 42 billion barrels of oil from the North Sea over the past 40 years. While oil companies have been drilling in the Weald Basin since the 1930s, UK Oil & Gas says new “concepts, techniques and technology” have given it a better understanding of the region’s potential. As recently as December, the British Geological Survey issued a report suggesting the basin’s shale rock formations held up to 8.8 billion barrels of oil.

Stephen Sanderson, the CEO of UK Oil & Gas, said the latest estimates shows this is a “world class potential resource.” The U.K. has identified three potential reservoirs of onshore oil and gas as it seeks to get in on the shale oil boom that has made the U.S. the world’s top energy producer. While U.S. developers have relied on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to break up the shale and release energy deposits, UK Oil & Gas says the Weald Basin is “naturally fractured” and so can be tapped using conventional drilling techniques. But Alastair Fraser, a professor of petroleum geoscience at Imperial College London, warned that the area’s geology is “rather unfriendly.” While the oil may exist, it will be difficult to get out of the ground because the rocks are extremely tight and non-permeable, said Fraser, who worked for British oil producer BP for 30 years. “That’s all very well,” he said of the increased

estimate of the basin’s oil resources. “But you’ve got to get at that.” Experts agree that only a fraction of the oil in shale rock formations can be extracted. Developers have been able to recover from 3 percent to 15 percent of the oil present in areas that are geologically similar to the Weald Basin, Sanderson said. Another complication may be opposition to large-scale drilling in a basin that stretches across 4,180 square miles (10,825 square kilometers) of southern England. “Some of the most prospective plays are in environmentally sensitive areas, in National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or under towns and villages,” the British Geological Study said in its report. “Shale oil exploration and potential development should progress cautiously to ensure the activity is safe and the environment is properly protected.”

Apple expects smartwatch demand to exceed supply at launch

Apple Inc. said on Thursday it expected the “tremendous interest” in its new smartwatch to result in demand outstripping supply when the gadget hits stores on April 24. Apple said it would take orders for the watch exclusively online during the initial launch period. The watch will be available for preview and preorder on Friday. Based on a survey in the United States on consumer interest in buying the Apple Watch, BMO Capital Markets has cut its estimate for sales to 39 million units though September 2016. Previously, the analysts had estimated sales of 55.5 million units. About 735 people responded to the survey. The watch, the first new product to be launched by Apple under Chief Executive Tim Cook, has been given poor marks by reviewers for its relatively low battery life and slow-loading apps. Apple is among several companies, including Samsung

LONDON - The Bank of England has decided to keep interest rates at a record low of 0.5 percent, with inflation remaining very low despite the growing economic recovery. Policymakers also opted Thursday to refrain from pumping more money into the economy. With the inflation rate at zero - and some economists predicting it could even go into negative territory - there was no incentive to act. Economist Howard Archer from IHS Global Insight says any interest rate hike could be delayed if there is prolonged political uncertainty after the May 7 general election in Britain, because it would dampen economic activity, particularly business investment. He says it currently looks probable that interest rates will stay steady until 2016.

Walgreens to close 200 stores

Walgreens Drugstore chain Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) announced plans to close about 200 U.S. stores as part of its first earnings report since it merged with European drug retailer Alliance Boots last year. Walgreens, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, said it will close the stores amid plans to boost its previously announced cost-cutting initiative by $500 million. Walgreens expects to reduce costs by a projected $1.5 billion by the end of fiscal 2017, the company said. “After a rigorous analysis, the company has identified additional opportunities for cost savings, primarily in its Retail Pharmacy USA division,” the company said Thursday. “Significant areas of focus include plans to close approximately 200 USA stores; reorganize corporate and field operations; drive operating efficiencies; and streamline information technology and other functions.” Walgreens’ spokesman Philip Caruso said the company has not yet decided which stores it will close, but it is “not focusing on any specific geographic area.” Caruso also said there is “no hard timeline” for when the stores will be closed during the period for cost cutting.

The soon-to-be closed stores make up roughly 2% of the Walgreens’ 8,232 drugstores in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Walgreens also said it opened 71 new drugstores in this region in the first half of fiscal 2015, including 25 relocations. Store closings aside, Walgreens wowed shareholders with strong earnings. Shares jumped $2.69 a share, or 3% a share, to $90.37 a share. Walgreens said adjusted second-quarter net earnings increased 33.2% to $1.2 billion. Secondquarter sales, meanwhile, increased 35.5% to $26.6 billion. The U.S. retail pharmacy division, which includes Walgreens and Duane Reade stores, posted sales in the second quarter of $21 billion, up 7.4% over the year-ago quarter. Total sales in stores open at least a year were up 6.9% over the same quarter a year ago. In December, Walgreens closed on a deal, valued at close to $16 billion, to purchase the remaining stake of European health and beauty retailer Alliance Boots that it didn’t already own. The new company, which includes more than 12,800 stores in 11 countries, was renamed Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., and it took on ticker symbol WBA.

Apple fans also got to check out the new diversified emojis that made headlines recently. Now, when consumers hold down certain emojis, such as a bride or a baby, they will get to choose from a more inclusive display of skin tones. The keyboard will even remember the specific color emoji a user chooses and set it as the default. It should be noted that there are a lot of characters that still offer only one skin color, such as all of the family and same-sex couple illustrations. While the family graphics feature samesex couples with varying numbers of children, they are all the same yellow color with no other options. To be fair, with the wide array of mixed race couples in the world, it would probably be difficult to include everyone, but Apple could have likely switched up the shades of the smiley face emojis rather easily. But at least this is a start in the diversifying process. Rumors about iOS 8.4 have been swirling since February, and some believe it might bring an Apple music streaming service to the iPhone’s future.

GE close to selling nearly all its real estate holdings General Electric Co is nearing a deal to sell practically all of its $30 billion real estate assets to a consortium led by Blackstone Group and Wells Fargo & Co, according to a person familiar with the matter. An announcement could come as early as Friday, the person said. A GE spokesman declined to comment. GE has been retreating from its property investments globally as it focuses on improving profits from sales of industrial products such as jet engines, generators, electric grid gear and oil field equipment. GE’s industrial operations are expected to post a rise of at least 10 percent in profit this year. Revenue from the company’s real estate business fell 24 percent in 2014, partly due to a decrease in net gains on property sales. Chief Executive Jeff Immelt has said he expects profits from the company’s aviation, power & water and other industrial businesses to rise to 75 percent of the company’s total by 2016 from 55 percent in 2013. To achieve that goal, he has been remaking GE’s portfolio of businesses, spinning off a retail finance operation, selling GE’s appliance business to Sweden’s Electrolux AB and agreeing to buy Alstom SA’s power generation and electric grid business for $14 billion. Blackstone said in November it would buy GE’s property unit in Japan in a deal worth more than $1.6 billion. The private equity firm also bought warehouses and development land in the United States from GE’s real estate unit. GE is expected to report an average 9 percent drop in earnings when it reports first-quarter results next week, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. GE shares were up 2.4 percent at $25.62 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange following the Wall Street Journal’s report of the possible sale of the real estate holdings. Up to Wednesday’s close, the stock had fallen about 1 percent this year. Real estate accounted for about 7 percent of GE Capital’s total $499 billion in assets related to continuing operations as of last Dec. 31, according to the company’s fourth quarter financial report. In his letter to shareholders last month, Immelt said his plan is to reposition GE Capital “as a smaller, safer specialty finance leader with less leverage and more liquidity.”

US jobless claims data point to strengthening labor market

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose less than expected last week and the four-week moving average of claims hit its lowest level since 2000, suggesting an abrupt slowdown in job growth in March was likely a fluke. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 281,000 for the week ended April 4, the Labor Department said on Thursday. It was the fifth straight week that claims remained below 300,000, a threshold that is associated with a strengthening labor market. “The claims data provide no confirmation of the March employment slowdown,” said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York. U.S. Treasury debt yields rose on the data and also as Greece’s 450 million euro loan payment to the

International Monetary Fund reduced safety bids for government debt. U.S. stocks edged up at the open while the dollar rose against a basket of currencies. Job growth slowed sharply in March, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by only 126,000, ending a 12-month stretch of employment gains above 200,000. But with the weakness mostly concentrated in the weathersensitive leisure and construction sectors, economists downplayed the slowdown. Last week’s tepid employment report joined weak consumer and business spending, industrial production and housing starts data in suggesting the economy grew at a sub-1 percent annual rate in the first quarter. Activity has been hit by a harsh winter, which is estimated to have chopped as much as seven-tenths of

a percentage point from first-quarter an economist at RBS in Stamford growth. A now-settled labor dispute Connecticut. The Federal Reserve is watching at normally busy ports on the West Coast, softer global demand and a the jobs market as it contemplates stronger dollar also have weighed on raising interest rates this year. The claims report also showed the economy. Economists had forecast claims the number of people still receiving benefits after an initial week of aid rising to 285,000 last week. A Labor Department analyst said fell 23,000 to 2.30 million in the week there was nothing unusual in the state- ended March 28. That was the lowest level data. Claims tend to be volatile level since December 2000. The labor market strength was around Easter because of the shifting underscored by a report on Tuesday nature of the holidays. The four-week moving average of showing job openings surging to a claims, considered a better measure 14-year high in February and less of labor market trends as it irons out competition for jobs among the week-to-week volatility, fell 3,000 to unemployed. A separate report on Thursday 282,250 last week, the lowest level since June 2000. from the Commerce Department “If claims remain this low, and showed wholesale inventories rose we think they might even head lower in February as sales remained weak, in the coming weeks, it will be hard suggesting wholesalers might have to claim there is persistent weakness little incentive to aggressively restock in the labor market,” said Guy Berger, warehouses in coming months.

Samsung shows signs of China consumer inflation stays at emerging from earnings slump 1.4 percent year-on-year in March SEOUL, South Korea - Samsung’s quarterly operating earnings fell 31 percent from a year earlier but the drop wasn’t as big as expected in a sign the smartphone and computer chip giant may be emerging from its profit slump. The company on Tuesday estimated its January-March operating profit at 5.9 trillion won ($5.4 billion), exceeding the average 5.5 trillion won forecast in a FactSet survey of analysts. Samsung did not give a breakdown of its financial performance but analysts said robust demand for its mobile chips and improvements in its smartphone business were behind the relative improvement. It will release its full quarterly results later this month. The company’s operating profit was an improvement from the previous two quarters when its mobile business, which accounts for two-thirds of Samsung’s income, suffered from a sales slowdown. Samsung estimated that its sales fell 12 percent to 47 trillion won ($43 billion) during the first quarter.

Analysts believe the South Korean company’s profits hit bottom during the third quarter. They expect a recovery in Samsung’s bottom line in the current quarter as the company is set to launch the latest version of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, on Friday. After criticism that its phones look cheap and are too complicated to use, Samsung ditched plastic, using aluminum and glass for the new flagship smartphone’s body. The company also removed many apps that were installed on the phones that critics said cluttered screen space without being useful. Solid demand for semiconductor devices that are used as components for mobile gadgets will continue to help drive a recovery in Samsung’s profits, according to analysts. Samsung is the world’s largest maker of memory chips. For the upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone, the company is supplying its own mobile processor that works as the brain of the phone. Samsung’s share price was unchanged in Seoul trading.

China’s consumer inflation stayed flat at 1.4 percent in March, while producer prices fell slightly less than projected, official data showed on Friday, keeping pressure on profit margins at Chinese companies as Beijing struggles to stimulate growth. Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted the March consumer price index (CPI) would come in at 1.3 percent, compared with 1.4 percent posted the prior month. The producer price index (PPI) declined 4.6 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Friday, extending a long-running factory deflation cycle that began in March 2012 to three years. The poll had expected producer prices to fall 4.8 percent from a year earlier, identical to the prior month. The data follows a surprise recovery in manufacturing activity for March, with the official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), released by the NBS on April 1, edged up to 50.1, in expansionary territory, from February’s 49.9. Economists and policymakers have been worried that the risk of deflation is rising for the world’s second-largest economy, as the drag

from a property market downturn and widespread factory overcapacity is compounded by an uncertain global outlook and soft commodity prices. Analysts cite serious economic headwinds, including weak demand and falling oil prices which have offset rising utilities and public services prices. “China policymakers have eased monetary settings and housing restrictions in the past few months, though more will need to be done to lift the domestic economy,” wrote Matthew Circosta at Moody’s Analytics. “Slowing inflation adds upward pressure on real interest rates, which handicaps consumption and investment. We look for another 25-basis point cut in the deposit and lending rates by midyear, while reserve ratios may also be lowered,” he said. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has made multiple cuts to guidance lending rates, and one cut to reserve requirement ratios at banks. It has also launched a long-awaited deposit insurance program in April, but economists said those moves have had little impact on real borrowing costs.

Despite only two teams, WFL powers on The Women’s Football League commenced on Sunday, March 15, 2015 with only three teams for season 2015. However due to the unfortunate and unexpected withdrawal of Net Rockers FC this led to an emergency meeting of the WFL on Sunday March 22, 2015. The outcome of the meeting led to rescheduling of games with only two teams remaining in the league, i.e., AFC Academy and AFC Academy (U15 girls). Candace Hanchell, President of the WFL stated that there is a lack of registered players hence, clubs are unable to field a full team. However, we will continue to play the 11 aside games until the end of the WFL,

and subsequently the beach soccer league, the 8-a-side league and other leagues will come on stream. This will give other clubs and teams an opportunity to participate in this wonderful sport. We are optimistic that player registration will increase as we have already seen the positive growth of the U15 girls. The WFL saw a friendly game on March 22, 2015 where all females were allowed to play regardless of their registration status. Invitational games will be played throughout the season, together with official WFL games. On Sunday, March 29th, 2015 AFC Academy played against AFC Academy (U15 girls). This match

proved to be competitive as Evinisha Sainverta of the U15 girls was able to score an early goal in the 13th minute of the game. This goal was an excellent motivator for the U15 girls as they played a skillful and hard game. However, during the 42nd minute of the game Christma Jean Louis of AFC Academy scored her second goal of the season. During the second half Melissa Jean Guy, captain of AFC Academy was able to score her first goal of the season at the 59th minute of the game. The U15 girls picked up the tempo of the game with their quick and fast passing of the ball, but to no avail as Shanidane Pluviose of AFC Academy was able to sink two goals

during the 73rd and the 85th minute of the game. Great sportsmanship was displayed throughout and after the game. AFC Academy gave a round of applause to the U15 and congratulated them on a job well done. Ms. Willandra Elliott from the AFC Academy (senior team) quoted “I remember when we were the younger girls in the league; it’s not all about winning it’s about developing your skills as a footballer and motivating your colleagues and opponents to do the same.” The next game will be played on Sunday, April 12th, 2015 at 4;00 pm – AFC Academy (U15 girls) vs. AFC Academy.

The Jamaicans won 41 gold, 25 silver and 19 bronze medals, the 31st straight time they have topped the table and their second best ever haul since the schedule moved to 66 events, and just shy of the record 89 medals won last year in Fort de France, Martinique. Brathwaite confident as Windies start preparations with new head coach NORTH SOUND, Antigua - West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite says he is quietly confident of doing well against England as the home team start their preparations for the upcoming three-Test Series. The 22-year-old was speaking as the Windies started their preparations at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Monday. The Barbados batsman has been in terrific form scoring three centuries in the recently concluded inaugural WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) and a hard fought century against South Africa in the second Test at Port Elizabeth last year. “I am obviously looking forward to this home series against England. England is a tough opposition so you know you got to work hard,” said Brathwaite, who scored three test centuries last year. “And in terms of my form I am coming from first class cricket feeling quite confident and just keep believing in myself and carry that into this series”.

Brathwaite’s recent centuries include 102 and 112 against Guyana Jaguars and 106 against South Africa last year. The West Indies continued their preparation with a full training session at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Tuesday morning under the supervision of new head coach Phil Simmons, the former West Indies allrounder. “I think we had a good practice sessions. All the guys enjoyed it,” he said. “The new coach seems pretty cool and relax and I enjoyed the first day working with him. I thought it was a good day for the team.” The last time West Indies and England played a test series in the Caribbean, the regional side emerged victorious one-nil. “It would be phenomenal (winning the series),” said Brathwaite. “Obviously the team is a little bit young but we have some good experienced guys and coming out on top would mean a lot for the region and I believe the guys can do it”.
