$4.5 MILLION FACE-LIFT FOR THE SANDS HOTEL TWO KILLED IN ACCIDENT

by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

T

he Sands Hotel, which has been a landmark property in the Turks and Caicos Islands tourism landscape for over two decades, temporarily closed its doors on August 20th to undergo a $4.5 million upgrade and a refresh of the popular Hemingway’s restaurant. “This major multi-million dollar undertaking is more than just a refurbishment, it’s a resounding testament to the confidence that the Hartling Group and the Sands Owners have in our wonderful Sands team and the future of Turks and Caicos Islands,” said Stan Hartling, CEO and lead partner of The Hartling Group, the owners of The Sands. The project is slated for completion just in time for the holiday travel season and the resort will reopen October 1st, 2016. Hartling said The Sands at Grace Bay has for over two decades now, been one of the very first icons that led the way and proved that the Condo Hotel model could be a sustainable and vibrant opportunity for the Turks and Caicos Islands. “It cut the path where one didn’t exist which then allowed others to follow and expand the concept into the major industry that we see today that employs thousands of people every day in TCI,” Hartling told The SUN. “The excitement behind this major renovation and refurbishment goes beyond just the physical need to do so, but hits at the heart of our emotional attachment to this property as being one of the Grandfathers of the industry here. We as a team feel we have the honor of being the custodians of such a historically significant property in the early development of TCI. Opening this property in October and showing the travel community not only has it has been impeccably maintained over nearly 20 years, but now how it has strived to reach new levels of luxury. This will be a solid tribute to what can be achieved right here in the Turks and Caicos. I want to thank all those on

General Manager Mona Beeson told The SUN that the major focus of the transformation will take place throughout the resort’s 114 studio and suite guest rooms. Beeson said that the updates, led by interior designer Rose Kelly of Inter Décor, will include new furnishings evoking a casual-modern style and inspired modern-abstract artwork showcasing coastal Caribbean colors, plus a new luxury bedding collection designed

Children in TCI will be at center of education By Todeline Defralien With the recent launch of the curriculum reform children in the Turks and Caicos Islands will be at the center of education. This was emphasised by Curriculum Development Officer Mrs. Ronda A. Blackman-Smith at a press conference held at the Premier’s Office on Thursday September 8th, 2016. Mrs. Ronda A. BlackmanSmith said, “The national curriculum/ the revision of the national curriculum for me, is a very exciting process. The new curriculum/revised document is not just a document; it is a document that teachers will actively engage in and in which students will have the opportunity to actively participate. We in the TCI have decided that we want our children to be the center of our education. We want our children to be the focus of education, therefore the child is our focus.” Blackman-Smith said they started to develop a curriculum that is broad, balanced, relevant and coherent that meets the diversity of the students of the Turks and Caicos Islands. “We are looking at learning that is relevant, learning where

students are able to ask questions and their interest is valuable. We are looking at materials where children would be able to manipulate and take active learning in the process. We are looking at a process where our teachers will be facilitators of knowledge, guiding our students along in the process. We are also looking at our assessment procedures, therefore we are not focusing on chalk and talk and pencil and paper testing. We are embracing alternative forms of assessment that would include observation, portfolio assessment, teachers taking time making checklist and we are also looking at inclusion.” The revised curriculum is characterized by: The utilization of an integrated, thematic approach across ten (10) learning areas in Primary School and fourteen (14) in High school from form 1-3, Incorporation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills across the learning areas, Crosscurricular development of all learning areas, Infusion of information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), Differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs, Development of values, character and citizenship and Assessment for learning.

When asked by media what is the difference between the traditional curriculum and the revised one, Blackman-Smith said, “The traditional curriculum emphasized basic skills. What we are doing now is a curriculum that is broad-based and reflects holistic learning through curriculum integration and science, technology, engineering and mathematics. When I speak of integration, we are saying that no longer will our subjects be taught in isolation. We do not live in isolation. Life is an integrated process, therefore why we should teach in isolation? We are saying, that will be a thing of the past, and children will be able to form links from one subject area to the next.” “We know that this is a diverse society and that all children do not learn in the same way. Therefore with that in mind, no child will be left behind; no child will be left out. It has great impact on teaching methodologies and skills. Key partners and key persons in this process will be our teachers,” Blackman-Smith explained. She added that the TCI National Curriculum will embody a vision for children and they want children who will: use scientific principles and applying them to

Governor discusses Delano’s game plan for Olympic medals His Excellency Governor Peter Beckingham has high hopes about the future of Delano Williams, the first person from the Turks and Caicos Islands to participate in an Olympic Games. After meeting with Delano Williams, his mother, and Mrs Rita Gardiner BEM in Grand Turk on Tuesday, 6 September, on his return from the Rio Olympics, the Governor said: “I was pleased Delano was able to find an hour in his busy postOlympics schedule to come round to Waterloo on 6 September to talk about his experiences in Rio, and his plans. He confirmed my view that, while the disqualification had been a devastating experience for him and his team mates, he had picked himself up from it with enormous determination. Delano left me in no doubt of his aim to compete in the Olympics again in four years time in Japan, and we discussed some of the key events en route to that goal. It includes volunteers from Alexandra Resort, Beach House Turks and Caicos, Blue Haven Resort and Marina, and the International School. One of the committee's first projects is supporting Footsteps for Good, the 100 mile walk across Turks and Caicos that raises money for local

charities. Committee members, under the chairmanship of Sanajah Forbes, held a planning meeting to get ready for the event on August 31. They are pictured meeting in the conference facilities at Blue Haven Resort. The 2016 Footsteps 4 Good finale event will be held on October, 1st 2016 at the Blue Haven Resort, Providenciales.

The 10km walk/race starts at 5:30am. It departs from the main IGA and ends at Blue Haven Resort. Once participants reach Blue Haven resort they will be greeted by representatives from a host of local charities, medal presentations, fitness challenges, music, healthy snacks, and more. This event is always loads of fun! The WIHL team is proud to once again have the opportunity to be a

part of this great event and for a chance to give back to many worthwhile local charities in Turks and Caicos. In addition to helping host the finale for the event, committee members are encouraging co-workers and members of the wider community to come out and support Footsteps for Good. Mark your calendars! Set your alarms, have your sneakers ready and see you on Saturday, October 1st.

International School welcomes 149 students On Wednesday September 7th, the International School of The Turks and Caicos Islands opened its gates to welcome students to the 20162017 academic year. This is the highest number the school has had on roll for nearly ten years. Sarah Amachee, said: "We now have children and staff from over 20 different nations and so we can truly call ourselves an international school!"

She added: "We have had a number of improvements made to the school grounds over the course of the summer break: the playground has been resurfaced, one wing has a new roof, our pool area has had a shaded area built, our Preschool has had an additional outdoor area added to its classroom space and all classrooms have been painted and have new resources. As with so much, we have to say thank you to, our partners at WIHL and also to our PTA and our staff for making all of this possible. Amachee said the school is looking forward to a very successful year.

Karen Bonabe calls for dismissal of Dr. Hamlet Nation and Mrs. Zaneta Burton from NHIP

By Todeline Defralien

Karen Bonabe, an employee of Misick and Stanbrook lawfirm, has called for the dismissal of Dr. Hamlet Nation and Mrs. Zaneta Burton from the NHIP. She made the impassioned call during a recent town hall meeting which was organised by former Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Lillian Boyce, under the patronage of her foundation Sister Sister TCI. Turning to NHIP chairman Mark Fulford, Bonabe said, “Turks and Caicos Islands is supposed to be better for us. We’re not supposed to be living like third-class citizens in our own country because we can’t go Jamaica and do that. We can’t go nowhere and do that, and I might as well tell you, Dr. Nation got to go. And that contract you all just renewed for the CEO (Zaneta Burton), God help you! If you go around the country you can’t even mention this woman’s name. People want to fight you. I am so serious! And the Government knows this, because how many times I told the Premier (Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing) about my situation. He totally ignored me. They totally ignored me, like I was nobody.” She added: “The thing about it is that Dr. Nation has no concern for Turks and Caicos Islands people. The only concern he has is that he makes

Karen Bonabe sure that he shows the Government that he can save some money so he can stay here on a work permit and to his people in Jamaica. The CEO has no concern for Turks and Caicos Islands people, because she has the backing of the Government and she will always be on a contract, so she doesn’t give a hell about us.” Bonabe said there are people in authority who are supporting certain officials at NHIP “in their ignorance”. She continued: “If they weren’t supporting them and their ignorance, they wouldn’t be able to do all this ignorance. All these cries people have with NHIP....and I am so disappointed in Turks and Caicos Island people, because they make a whole lot of noise and they don’t bite. And that’s the reason why these people on work permit come here and call us stupid and call us all kind of things, because they know that the only thing we’ve got is mouth. They know that there’s no way in hell that we can go in their

country and be able to do these kinds of things that they are doing to us.” Bonabe said that she is tired of being frustrated by NHIP, adding that “enough is enough”. She also said that the Progressive National Party (PNP) Government doesn’t care about the people, their health, or jobs, or whether “ people are living or not”. She added: “I am tired of hurting in my own country. I am tired. We got to stand up and start somewhere.” Bonabe gave details of the experience she and her husband had after he got sick in the USA and was sent to Jamaica and was returning to the TCI. She complained about the inadequate subsistence which NHIP gave them, which could not cover hotel or basic meals in Jamaica. “They gave my husband $100 a day and they gave me $200. It didn’t matter what that $200 could have done. In Jamaica they don’t charge you Jamaican dollars for a hotel. You have to pay U.S. dollars plus tax. You had no room for nothing else. You had no room to buy food and so on, so automatically that was an expense on me.” Meanwhile, Bonabe stated that she called the CEO’s husband (Gordon Burton) who is her co-worker and he didn’t answer his phone so she

sent him a WhatsApp message and told him the situation but he refused to answer. She added: “I waited for weeks and I asked the CEO, because she’s in and out of our office. Like I said, because her husband works there, so I said to her, I have my stuff for the tickets that we used on American (Airlines). I said the tickets from Air Turks and Caicos, you guys still have, because we didn’t use them. This means I had already known that Inter Island had already refunded them for the tickets, because we didn’t use the second half of the tickets. So she (Mrs. Burton) rudely said to me ‘you had no rights to go through Miami. We don’t send anybody through Miami. It’s not our policy to send anybody through Miami. ‘So I’m like, we had permission from our case worker that we could have done that, because we were stuck. What were we suppose to do? She (Burton) said she had no rights to tell you that she doesn’t have any authority to do that; and I’m like, that was the only person that we were in contact with in Turks and Caicos. We tried to contact you. She said anyway, you’re not going to get that back because it’s not our policy to do so.” Bonabe told the audience that it wasn’t the $700 and something dollars that mattered to her, it was just the principle.

NHIP is failing the people of the TCI says, Sabrina Green By Todeline Defralien

Sabrina Green, who is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming election, said the NHIP is failing the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands and it is time to put some pressure on that institution. “I want to put InterHealth Canada and NHIP on notice that you got some barking dogs out here in the streets today and these dogs have teeth and they could bite," Green said during a recent town hall meeting which was organised by former Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Lillian Boyce, under the patronage of her foundation Sister Sister TCI. She added: "I am encountering more people on a daily basis that are coming forward about their health concerns and worries that they face in this country. It’s going to be exposed, and I am waiting on

the day when we have this demonstration, because these people want to be a part of it. There’re so many people, the names are so numerous to mention.” Green continued: “If you look around here in this country and you see the people who are getting maltreated in the healthcare industry, it’s us (Turks and Caicos Islanders) ending up in the body bags. It’s us right now that can’t get healthcare because of situations they let go by for so long that it becomes terminal. We are an endangered species in our own country, and we are dying daily because of a healthcare system that is failing us.” Green said during her tours around the country she has met so many people who are encountering so many struggles when it comes to the healthcare industry and it really appears that no one actually cares. She said there is a new breed of people who

Sabrina Green, who is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming election are rising up today in the TCI who are standing in the gap for their brothers and sisters and they are going to tear down some doors and fight for them.

Willin Prophet song ‘Turks Island Love’ wins best reggae song award Willin Prophet is captivating audiences with his originality, distinct lyrical style and edgy reggae production, on full display in his new radio single ‘Turks Island Love’. ‘Turks Island Love’ gained Prophet an award for best Reggae song at The Akademia Music Awards in January 2016. Willin Prophet told The SUN he feels proud and blessed about this achievement, which is good for Turks and Caicos Islands by helping to promote the country in a more positive light. Willin, who is described by many as a very humble, loving, caring, determined and talented individual, comes from a musical background. His father, mother and some of his sisters and brothers played in the band Willin Prophet for a few years. Some of his role models in music are James Brown, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cook, Peter Tosh, Rod Stewart and Jackson 5. Willin Prophet's catchy new track ‘Turks Island Love’ has that audible conviction, but its sheer inventiveness and mainstream digestibility fulfill the other half of the equation that determines who

gets radio time and who goes home unheard. Willin Prophet’s ripping percussion, soaring guitar work and powerful vocals make this harmonic reggae song shine brilliantly for its boldness and clarity of message. ‘Turks Island Love’ is receiving a positive listener response on radio. Prophet said when he first heard his song Turks Island Love playing on radio Turks & Caicos on a Saturday morning with his wife, he was very pleased and said ‘whoa they finally playing it. Blessings’. He added: “The inspiration behind my debut radio single was a combination of things: a lack of Love And Respect I saw among the younger people, and learning about quite a few people who were killed and whose cases were Never Resolved including one of my brothers who was the bass player for the group R.I.P.” Prophet said what encouraged him to create music is the love and feel for the art, helping to create a more productive life for his parents and family, helping other artists in his county to achieve their musical dreams, and creating positive change. When asked what advice he would give to young, aspiring artists who are unsure and need guidance, he

Willin Prophet pictured at The Akademia Music Awards in January 2016. said, “Keep doing what you love, and never give up and stay positive. The race is not for the swift, but for the ones that endureth.” Just recently, Prophet visited his homeland (TCI) where he is working on a music video for Turks Island Love visiting the different islands and shooting videos and photos. He is also creating new music, a new single in the works, called Dance T C I, another one of his gifts to the people of Turks & Caicos Island praising the dancing vibe.

What does it mean to be an understudy on a job as a Turks and Caicos Islander?

By Calsada C. Johnson

The Definition of an Understudy: a performer who learns the role of another in order to serve as a replacement if and when necessary. So there it is!!!! But what does it really mean to be an understudy or a replacement in the Turks & Caicos Islands job market as a Turks & Caicos Islander? I am at odds with the use of this word by our Government. Work permits are being issued under these pretenses and there is no follow through by government to ensure that the understudy is being trained properly to take on that work permit holders position. Please don’t think that I do not want the issuing of work permits; I understand that there is a need for work permits at times, but are we policing this endeavor? Are we ensuring that the policies are being carried out correctly? Or are work permits a way for expatriates to have a free ticket to permanent residency in the Turks & Caicos Islands, and go on to empower themselves. Then they now restart the cycle only to bypass the Turks & Caicos Islander / Belonger to bring in their friend for the position. Each and every day I can speak with a Turks & Caicos Islander / Belonger and their words are “we are being treated unfairly on our jobs”,” I feel as if I don’t belong”,” or I am not good enough, smart enough, I am not doing enough” or I am told , “whenever

opportunities arise I am not thought of first before the adverts are sent out over different medias”, “or I am frustrated and considering leaving my job to find greener pastures”. This is happening too frequently. Tell me, are we not teachable? Are we not of value in our own country? Should not our government ensure that its people are given the opportunity to empower themselves? Turks & Caicos Islanders / Belongers, have you thought about how you want our country Turks & Caicos to be or to look in 20 years from now. Well I have, and this is what I want: • I want to see Turks & Caicos Islanders / Belongers at the forefront of our country’s various industries, Take for instance Hospitality, this industry is most important to the Turks and Caicos Islands, because of tourism. Our tourist do not meet us first, they are always asking where are the Turks & Caicos Islanders or where are you from; we should be dominating this industry. •I want to see them as Entrepreneurs operating and owning successful businesses. •I want to see that we have established farming throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands to the point where we are able to feed ourselves. I have done a television show on various farms in North Caicos, where farmers are eager to have product growing including live stock for sale, and of course nothing is being done by this government to assist them to ensure that we can have farming on a larger

Calsada Johnson is the PDA Candidate for ED 5 Leeward & Long Bay Hills scale. • Each Turks and Caicos Islander should have the opportunity to receive a higher education if they desire one, no longer being overlooked on a job because we would have qualified ourselves for the jobs. I would like to see an analysis done on the various positions that work permits are issued for, and with that information we determine the subjects that will be offered at the Community College and the various subjects that students would need to study away from home. •Our government would have ensured that a strong emphasis is put on sports and that our youth are involved in sports as well as other meaningful activities made a priority. •Our country would have gained recognition not as a place to seek employment, but for its existing skilled labor and its laws. I see a country in need of great leadership and profound vision, with

men and women that have a love for country, its people and a government that is always seeking ways of empowering its people. Turks & Caicos Islanders I am devoting my love for this country, patriotism, energy, and ideas to ensure that we have the Turks & Caicos Islands that we deserve and dream about. Turks & Caicos Islanders, I do not want the future generation of this country to continue to move away to find their place in someone else’s country, because we did not make provisions for their future here within their own land; we must not, cannot allow this trend to continue with this present government. This coming election is a pivotal one, voting for someone because they are your friend, or because they have helped you out with some monies earlier is a very cheap way to sellout your country, and it will become a very expensive price to pay later on. This election, I encourage you to vote for persons that are willing to stand up and say, we are not having it any longer, persons that have a passion and love for this country, Individuals that are patriotic and that can teach patriotism, persons that are able to bring unity, because as small as we are we are a diverse nation. “Because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one” Captain Spark Vote for Empowerment, Leadership and profound Vision for this country, our country Turks & Caicos Islands, which can only come from The Progressive Democratic Alliance.

Our Guests

By Jamell Robinson I am not sure of the development process that other writers use when formulating an article, a speech, or any piece of material for publication, but in my case before I write any article, I have thought about it for several weeks if not months before I put the proverbial pen to paper. I say that to say this: this article that I am writing should have been written moons ago, but for some reason I just never got around to it. As a person that pays close attention to the happenings in the Turks and Caicos Islands, I, like many, would have been very upset upon reading of the incident at Neptune Villas involving one of its owners and Miss Ryesha Higgs and Mr. Devonte Smith. I will not rehash the incident here but would advise everyone to know their rights and the law at did Miss Higgs and Mr. Smith and you will come out on the better end

big a profit as the market could bear if for it. Every single non Turks and not more. These guests are allowed to Caicos Islander that comes into the have countless concessions to draw in country must understand or be made their investment dollars; albeit, most to understand that they are guests in of which does not circulate in country. our country. Even the Governor is a Be that as it may, as a guest in this guest in our country and when we were country, no amount of money allows ready, we have removed Governors our guests to have dominion and “Lord” in the past when necessary. Now, as over the TCI people. I hear the critics now saying, our guests - you are afforded certain privileges as we have all ways been “Well they’re only doing what they see a hospitable nation of people. This us do to each other”. For those persons hospitality stretches back to days of old I say, think of any TCI family unit, they when any visitor, neighbor or relative amongst themselves may pull down, would come to a home and be welcomed curse, fight, or row with each other all by the matriarch of that household, day and night but let someone from who would then ensure that that guest outside of that family say something would ensure they would get a share bad about any one of those family of the food and drink even though this members; they would circle the wagons would be cutting their children short, and protect their own. In this matter and others, this also should be the case but it was to ensure everyone gets fed and watered. in our small TCI family of a nation. It is unacceptable for racism, Fast forward to today, our guests are allowed to buy property in bigotry and discrimination to be openly the TCI without restriction. They are or secretly practiced in the TCI let allowed to open businesses and turn as alone against the very people who

have allowed so many to come and make their living and fortune. You must render to Caesar what is Caesars’ and that follows that you respect every Turks and Caicos Islander while you are a Guest in Our Country.

Thanks to the Commissioner and officers of the Police Force

By Shirley Hentutler

I would like to take the time, through the news media, to thank the hard working officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force here in Providenciales. Recently, my son's car was stolen and we reported it to the 911 call center. Within minutes, officer Jolly and his late night crew were there on the scene and started working right away. At approximately 10:20 a.m. the next morning, my son got a call from some friends who were following the car at that time, stating that his car was in front of them on Leeward Highway driving very quickly going up. He called the 911 desk and they were on it, and within the hour he was called to identify the car. Today, I am thankful and proud to say that my son's car was found within 12 hours of it being stolen, although there were damages to the rear. I would like to thank officer

Jolly and the squad who were on the late night shift, for their quick response in getting to the scene. The police officers did an impeccable job (the ones on the scene and behind the scenes, including officer Chase) with the little that they had and with the help of three good friends who alerted us and the police. Officer Ewing, officer Felix Brown and officer Bryon worked very hard throughout the morning in the hot sun. I witnessed them doing wiping away the sweat, cutting away bush and they never once complained. They even stayed on the scene to offer further protection until the wrecker came, because the car was ditched in a wooded area in the deep parts of Long Bay. The thief/ thieves escaped. To the Governor, who is in charge of security in the Turks and Caicos Islands, please give the Police Force resources so that they can continue to work and do a better job with crime here.

checked on the car washes, many of them were empty, while some had a few vehicles. On weekends, many of them are busier. Most of the car wash outlets

LIFESTYLE WHO calls on Caribbean countries to use updated guidelines to reduce STIs The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on Caribbean and other countries to start using immediately the updated guidelines to reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in response to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. In issuing the new guidelines, WHO said Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis are all caused by bacteria, adding that they are generally curable with antibiotics. However, WHO said these STIs often go undiagnosed, “and they are becoming more difficult to treat, with some antibiotics now failing as a result of misuse and overuse.” It is estimated that, each year, 131 million people are infected with Chlamydia, 78 million with gonorrhoea, and 5.6 million with syphilis. “Resistance of these STIs to the effect of antibiotics has increased rapidly in recent years and has reduced treatment options,” said WHO, adding that, of the three STIs, gonorrhoea has developed the strongest resistance to

antibiotics. WHO said strains of multidrugresistant gonorrhoea that do not respond to any available antibiotics have already been detected. It said antibiotic resistance in Chlamydia and syphilis, though less common, also exists, making prevention and prompt treatment critical. When left undiagnosed and untreated, WHO said these STIs can result in serious complications and long-term health problems for women, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage, and untreated gonorrhoea and Chlamydia can cause infertility in both men and women. Infection with Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis can also increase a person’s risk of being infected with HIV two to three fold. The organisation says an untreated STI in a pregnant woman increases the chances of stillbirth and newborn death.

The analysis - which covered trials in the United States, Canada, India, Japan, Poland and Britain - found that taking vitamin D tablets cut the risk of severe asthma attacks needing hospital treatment to around 3 percent from 6 percent. Adrian Martineau, a professor of respiratory infection and immunity

at Queen Mary University of London who led the work, said the results were exciting, though also advised caution. "The findings relating to severe asthma attacks come from just three trials in which the patients were mostly adults with mild or moderate asthma," he said. More trials are needed in children and in adults with severe asthma, he said, to find out if vitamin D could also benefit these patients. Martineau further said it was not yet clear whether the effect of vitamin D tablets was across all patients, or only in those who had low vitamin D levels to start with.

that all sex is bad for older people.” The researchers acknowledge that the study cannot prove a cause and effect relationship between the participants’ sex lives and their heart health. They also note that future studies are needed to better understand the links and identify the mechanisms by which sexuality may affect heart health. Noting that the current study did not define sexual activity very specifically, Stuart Brody, visiting professor at Charles University in Prague, who was not involved in the study, pointed out another weakness in the findings. “The results that they obtained might be due to sexual activities other than penile-vaginal intercourse.” A review of existing research found that specifically penile-vaginal intercourse, and corresponding orgasm, is tied to better physical and psychological health as well as better intimate relationship quality, Brody told Reuters Health by email.

"Further analyses to investigate this are ongoing and results should be available in the next few months." Erika Kennington, head of research for the charity Asthma UK, said the findings showed promise, but more evidence was needed for them to be conclusive. "With so many different types of asthma, it could be that Vitamin D may benefit some people with the condition but not others," she said. Asthma is a chronic disease that affects around 300 million people around the world, often giving symptoms of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

Bermuda in very sad state, says union leader

Union leaders lamented the state of the island on Labour Day yesterday, accusing the Bermuda Government of misfiring policies and misspending money when the people are struggling. Hundreds of people gathered at Union Street ahead of the annual march, huddled beneath umbrellas amid the rain as leaders delivered speeches urging them to stand together. Shannon James, president of the Bermuda Union of Teachers, took the lead three days before the island’s public schoolchildren return to the classroom after the summer holidays. Mr James compared the status of the island to Babylon, noting a range of issues including the airport redevelopment project, the lack of an education commissioner and the decision to repair the Cabinet offices before schools. “Something is wrong,” he said. “The biblical scholar will say these are the end of days. These things will happen. The conservative person will say the system is broken. The revolutionist will say the system is alive and well. It’s just doing what it’s supposed to do.” He noted the number of Bermudians leaving the island looking for opportunities, calling it a sad day. “Didn’t we transform Dockyard?” he asked. “Didn’t we create nine acres that were not in existence last year at this time? And you are telling me it’s too hard to fix education? It’s too hard to give our students the schools they deserve?” Chris Furbert, president of the Bermuda Industrial Union, meanwhile questioned the decision to invest money in renovations to a minister’s office while union members have not seen a pay increase in five years. He reiterated calls for the establishment of a living wage in Bermuda and addressed the issue of pay disparity. “We need to have a hard conversation about how we are going to

Trinidad Court of Appeal to hear election petition appeal next month PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The Trinidad and Tobago Court of Appeal will next month hear the appeal filed by the main opposition United National Congress (UNC) challenging the decision of the High Court to dismiss its five petitions challenging the outcome of the 2015 general election. The Court will sit from October 17-19 to hear the arguments after Justice Mira Dean-Armorer, who last month dismissed the UNC’s claim that the election should be invalidated because the Election and Boundaries Commission (EBC) should not have extended the poll by one hour in

Trinidad due to heavy rains. The judge acknowledging that while the EBC had breached the election laws, there was not sufficient evidence to declare the polls null and void. In a 54-page ruling Justice Dean Armorer said: “I have in these petitions strove to hold the balance to protect the will of the majority, while ensuring that the patent mistakes of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) not reduce the election of 2015 to a mere sham.” She said it is her view that the elections of 2015 in Trinidad and Tobago “were substantially in

accordance with the prescribed law and it does not appear to be that the breaches affect the results. “It is therefore my view and I hold that the election petition should be and is hereby dismissed,” she ruled. But in their appeal, lawyers for the party headed by former prime minister Kamla Persad Bissessar argue that the judge erred in speculating over its decision to file petitions for only six marginal constituencies, San Fernando West, Tunapuna, St Joseph, Toco/Sangre Grande, Moruga/Tableland and La Horquetta/Talparo. The party is also contending

that the judge was wrong to dismiss its evidence of the unknown consequences of the EBC’s decision as speculation. “It was not known from the evidence before her how many people were aware of the commission’s directive and how those people who were aware of it would have reacted to it. “These unknown consequences meant that the learned judge could not properly have found with certainty that the breaches did not materially affect the outcome of the election,” according to the documents filed by the UNC.

St. Vincent government complains about LIAT’s service KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The St. Vincent and the Grenadines government is seeking an urgent meeting with the management of the regional airline, LIAT, following the airline’s poor service to the island. St. Vincent and the Grenadines is one four shareholder governments of the Antigua-based regional airline and the Dr. Ralph Gonsalves administration wants the meeting to be held here by September 18. In a letter to the airline, the government said the meeting will allow Kingstown to “have a common understanding with a view to enhancing the service to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “It is time for LIAT to get its act and attitude towards the travelling public of St. Vincent and the Grenadines together,” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security in Kingstown, Godfred Pompey, told the airline in a September 4 letter. Pompey told Diane Shurland, LIAT’s Antigua-based legal counsel, that once LIAT makes a request for the E.T. Joshua Airport to remain open beyond the 11:30 p.m. agreed operating hours, his ministry will bill LIAT for staff overtime. In the letter, Pompey complained about the “ongoing scheduling problems and cancellations facing the travelling public of St. Vincent and the Grenadines”. He said the situation was “further exacerbated” on Saturday, September 3, when LIAT flight LI738, on which the island’s national football team was travelling to Trinidad en route to its destination “when in the wisdom of someone in Operations, Antigua directed the Aircraft to return

Government of St.Vincent and the Grenadines express concerns about LIAT Services to the E.T. Joshua Airport”. The aircraft was instructed to return to St. Vincent with the understanding that the team would have been accommodated on the early morning flight to Trinidad and Tobago, where the players had a 6:15 a.m (local time) connection on Sunday, September 4, on Copa Airlines. “Up to our discussion on Sunday 10:15 a.m., the team was still stranded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” Pompey wrote in the letter, which was copied to chair of LIAT’s board of directors, Jean Holder and Isaac Solomon, who represents the Gonsalves government on the board. The team left St. Vincent Sunday evening and was stranded in Trinidad and only arrived in Guatemala late Tuesday night, about 24 hours before their football World Cup qualifier match against that country. Pompey said that since June, LIAT’s service to St. Vincent and the Grenadines “has been deteriorating with no improvement in sight. “As a major shareholder, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been receiving the crumbs in terms of service. Officers at LIAT are now

taking pleasure in shifting the blame of LIAT’s poor service to the Ministry and by extension the management of E.T. Joshua Airport, making demands to keep our airport open at times beyond 2:00 a.m. This is highly unacceptable since some category of staff is required to report to work at the opening of the airport at 5:30 a.m.,” Pompey said. He said that from observation, LIAT’s management, including operations, “is taking St. Vincent and the Grenadines for granted and abusing our accommodation. “Despite repeated communication, the demands for extended operating hours at E.T. Joshua Airport are being unbearable and unreasonable. This situation is not only placing extra strain on staff but also increasing the frustration of the travelling public. One is now questioning the frequency of these late night flights and cancellation of services to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to determine whether or not they are deliberate,” Pompey wrote. The public servant’s letter comes months after Gonsalves on February 25 wrote to then chief executive officer of LIAT, David

Evans, who had in a letter one week earlier requested “a further advance of EC$810,000 (One EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) by St. Vincent and the Grenadines”. In response Prime Minister Gonsalves said St. Vincent and the Grenadines was not well served by the current schedule of the airline and said that the island cannot be considered to “be in a condition akin to that of an abused spouse, in which commitment is taken for granted, amidst shabby treatment”. Earlier this month, Gonsalves also raised with LIAT the issue of a lack of adequate service and poor scheduling to the island.. The complaints by the Gonsalves — who is chair of LIAT’s shareholder governments — comes even as he has complained about the failure of other governments across the region to invest in the cash-strapped airline. In April, Evan resigned as LIAT’s chief executive officer after Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, requested an urgent meeting of the shareholders of regional airline and demanded an immediate investigation into the cancellation of a morning flight into Dominica on April 8. The cancellation reportedly affected over 40 passengers in Dominica. Skerrit said he was utter disgusted at the shabby manner in which Dominica was being treated by the airline saying it “clearly appears to be an awful, negative attitude towards Dominica by senior personnel at LIAT.” “I am warning, now, that this must stop,” the Dominican leader wrote.

Chinese embassy says companies deny kickback policy, Portia orders probe Chinese companies in Jamaica are reportedly denying knowledge of a kickback policy, following claims made in the People’s National Party (PNP) donations scandal, which has also drawn a response from United States government representatives in the island. Senior party member Dr Omar Davies revealed the claims in a letter to the party’s general secretary, Paul Burke, on Tuesday. Davies said Burke had made comments linking him to money collected from Chinese investors doing business with the Government. “To be honest, I am shocked to hear about the allegation,” Fan Jianghong, economics and commercial counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica, told The Gleaner in an emailed response yesterday. “The embassy has discussed these allegations with Chinese companies in Jamaica. The companies have categorically denied the payment of any agency fee or other monetary sum or reward (whether in cash or kind) to any government official, public officer, or political party in relation to the implementation of any project or activity.” Fan did not name the companies. Mexico president replaces finance minister after damaging Trump visit

President Enrique Pena Nieto on Wednesday replaced his close ally and finance minister Luis Videgaray after the two were heavily criticized for Donald Trump’s controversial visit to Mexico last week. A sombre-looking Pena Nieto told a news conference that Videgaray, who officials said was the architect of the visit by the Republican candidate for the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election, would give way to former finance minister Jose Antonio Meade. Pena Nieto was pilloried on social media for hosting Trump at short notice last Wednesday after the New York businessman had underpinned much of his campaign on building a border wall that he said Mexico would pay for to stem illegal immigration. Trump has also threatened to carry out mass deportations and rewrite trade treaties crucial to the Mexican economy. Trump insulted Mexicans by saying the country sent rapists and drug runners into the United States.

Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto With economic growth sluggish, the president’s popularity at record lows and tensions palpable between the finance minister and other cabinet members, rumors of Videgaray’s impending departure

have bubbled under the surface in Mexico for months. The fiery reaction to Trump’s visit increased pressure on Pena Nieto to make changes. New finance minister Meade is a friend of Videgaray’s and had started in the administration as foreign minister before moving to the social development ministry last year. Senior diplomats said Videgaray had been instrumental in arranging the Trump visit. The 48-year-old, who ran Pena Nieto’s election campaign, was widely seen as the president’s top aide, with a huge influence on policy. The government had hoped to impress upon Trump the need to moderate his tone, reconsider his more divisive campaign proposals and better understand Mexico’s concerns during the 70-minute talk he held with Pena Nieto in Mexico City. But within hours of leaving Mexico, Trump was telling a cheering crowd of supporters in Phoenix,

Arizona, that Mexico would pay for the border wall “100 percent,” prompting fresh ridicule of Pena Nieto at home. Videgaray, who has also been rumored as a potential 2017 gubernatorial candidate for the ruling party in the State of Mexico, a populous region next to the capital, will not take another public post, a finance ministry spokeswoman said. He is exiting shortly before the government presents its 2017 budget with cuts needed to restore confidence after rating agency Standard & Poor’s last month said it could cut Mexico’s credit rating following a marked increase in debt. The economy has consistently underperformed expectations during Videgaray’s tenure. The economy contracted in the second quarter for the first time in three years, and the collapse in global oil prices has sabotaged Pena Nieto’s hopes that a landmark energy reform would spur a wave of foreign investment.

Wells Fargo will pay $190 million to settle customer fraud case Wells Fargo has long been the envy of the banking industry for its ability to sell multiple products to the same customer, but regulators on Thursday said those practices went too far in some instances. The largest U.S. bank by market capitalization will pay $185 million in penalties and $5 million to customers that regulators say were pushed into fee-generating accounts they never requested. “We regret and take responsibility for any instances where customers may have received a product that they did not request,” the bank said of a settlement reached Thursday with California prosecutors and federal regulators. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will receive $100 million of the total penalties - the largest fine ever levied by the federal agency.

“Today’s action should serve notice to the entire industry that financial incentive programs, if not monitored carefully, carry serious risks that can have serious legal consequences,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. Los Angeles officials and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency were also party to the settlement. In a complaint filed in May 2015, California prosecutors alleged that Wells Fargo pushed customers into costly financial products that they did not need or even request. Bank employees were told that the average customer tapped six financial tools but that they should push households to use eight products, according to the complaint. The bank opened more than 2 million deposit and credit card accounts that may not have been

A Wells Fargo branch is seen in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, February 10, 2015 authorized, the CFPB said Thursday. Wells Fargo spokeswoman Mary Eshet said the bank fired 5,300 employees over “inappropriate sales conduct.” The firings took place over a five-year period, Eshet said, adding

that the bank has 100,000 employees in its branches. Wells Fargo regularly releases numbers about how many products it sells to customers, a practice it calls “cross-sell.” Its wealth and investment management unit, for example, sold 10.55 products per retail banking household in November 2015, up from 10.49 a year earlier, according to the bank’s annual 10-K financial filing. In the second quarter, however, the bank changed how it tallies up some of those numbers and said it was considering more changes. Piper Jaffray analyst Kevin Barker said he does not think the crackdown on Wells Fargo will have much of an impact on others in the industry. “I think this is unique to Wells Fargo and their particular situation and how hard they push on cross-sell,” he said.

UK economy will suffer after Brexit vote, says British PM

Theresa May holds a cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s country retreat Chequers in Buckinghamshire to discuss department-by-department Brexit action plans, Britain August 31, 2016 Britain’s economy will suffer as a result of the decision to leave the European Union despite signs in recent economic data that the impact has not been as severe as some predicted, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday. The June decision to leave the 28-country EU sent financial markets into shock in anticipation of a recession as Britain enters a years-long process of tearing itself away from its biggest trading partner and forging a new global economic role.

Sterling surged on Thursday after a stronger-than-expected survey of manufacturers offered the best signal yet that Britain’s economy is performing better than many had initially feared. Nevertheless, May predicted that the vote would damage the economy and said the government would continue to monitor economic data in the coming months before setting out its fiscal response to protect the economy later this year. “There will be difficult times

John Lennon’s killer denied parole for ninth time The man who shot and killed John Lennon in New York City nearly 36 years ago has again failed to persuade a state parole board to release him from prison on parole, officials said on Monday. Mark David Chapman, 61, will remain behind bars at a maximumsecurity prison in Erie County near Buffalo, New York, after his request for parole was rejected for the ninth time since 2000. Chapman, an obsessed fan of the musician and his former group the Beatles, was convicted of shooting Lennon as he arrived with his wife, Yoko Ono, at his apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Dec. 8, 1980. Chapman received a sentence

of 20 years to life after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge. His petition for parole has come up every two years since 2000. “In spite of many favorable factors, we find all to be outweighed by the premeditated and celebrity seeking nature of the crime,” the New York Board of Parole said in a statement on Monday rejecting Chapman’s request. “From our interview and review of your records, we find that your release would be incompatible with the welfare of society and would so deprecate that seriousness of the crime as to undermine respect for the law.” Chapman will next appear for a parole hearing in August 2018, according to online state records.

Fox settles sexual harassment lawsuit for $20 million on Ailes’ behalf

Fox News will pay $20 million to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit by former anchor Gretchen Carlson, whose allegations led to the resignation of network chief Roger Ailes in July, a source familiar with the agreement said on Tuesday. The company also settled with two other women who were part of a Fox-initiated investigation by the law firm Paul, Weiss, Wharton & Garrison, according to the source, who wished to remain anonymous. The settlements come less than two months after Fox News’ parent company, 21st Century Fox, hired Paul, Weiss to investigate claims against Ailes. During that investigation, more than two dozen women described harassment by Ailes, according to New York Magazine. In a move that legal experts said was unusual, 21st Century Fox offered a public apology to Carlson, who filed suit against Ailes in July, saying he took her off a popular show and cut her pay because she refused to have a sexual relationship with him. “We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve,” the company said. While the settlement removes some uncertainty, observers said questions remain about the conservative news channel’s ability to retain top talent and whether more allegations will surface.

Minnesota man admits to abducting, killing 11-year-old in 1989 A Minnesota man admitted in court on Tuesday to the 1989 abduction and killing of an 11-yearold boy whose remains he helped police locate last week as part of a plea agreement, authorities said. Arrest made in $3 million jewelry theft from rapper Drake’s tour bus

Rihanna arrives at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. Rihanna says her new collection for Puma was inspired by Japanese street culture. The pop star launched the autumn/ winter 2016 Fenty Puma by Rihanna line on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 at Foot Locker in New York City

Drake speaks with Rihanna after presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards in New York, U.S., August 28, 2016 An Arizona stagehand was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of stealing about $3 million in jewelry from a bus used by Grammy-winning rapper Drake on his latest concert tour, Phoenix police said. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Travion King, snatched the briefcase after boarding the bus at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday at the Talking Stick Arena in Phoenix, police spokesman Vince Lewis said. King has done unspecified contract work with local entertainment venues in the past, but was not known to be employed for work for that particular show, Lewis added.

The bus was being used for a Phoenix show featuring Drake and his fellow rapper Future. It was apparently unoccupied at the time and the jewelry did not belong to Drake, according to Lewis. Drake and Future were appearing in the city’s downtown as part of the “Summer Sixteen Tour,” which began in July, according to the event website. It was scheduled to resume on Wednesday in Los Angeles. A representative for Drake declined to comment on the case on Wednesday. King was being held at a Maricopa County jail, Lewis said. He was first arrested around

3 a.m. in a separate matter by Arizona State University Police in Tempe, a Phoenix suburb, on suspicion of trespassing after officers found him in a dormitory with a bag that held the stolen jewelry, Lewis said. Then, just before police released him on Wednesday afternoon, detectives investigating the jewelry theft learned he was being held at the jail and arrested him on suspicion of burglary, Lewis said. Portions of King’s activity were captured by arena surveillance cameras, Lewis said. Officers are working with the victim to account for the items reported stolen, Lewis said.

Rihanna launches new fashion collection for Puma NEW YORK — Rihanna says her new collection for Puma was inspired by Japanese street culture. The pop star launched the autumn/winter 2016 Fenty Puma by Rihanna line on Tuesday at Foot Locker in New York City. She says she remembers exploring fashion during her first trip to Japan years ago and leaving in awe. Her edgy collection, mostly in black and white, includes loose sweaters and pants, dresses, skirts, sneakers and sneaker heels. Fans screamed as Rihanna entered the venue, singing her songs that played in the background. She says she designed the line for her feverish fans.

Cosby could face multiple accusers at June assault trial Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial in Pennsylvania has been scheduled for June next year, and if prosecutors have their way, more than a dozen accusers will take the stand to detail what they claim is a decades-long pattern of attacks. During a hearing on Tuesday, Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O’Neill in Norristown, Pennsylvania, set Cosby’s trial for June 5, 2017, setting up what will likely be months of fiercely fought legal battles over the scope of evidence allowed at trial. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s office on Tuesday asked O’Neill’s permission to call as witnesses 13 women who claim the 79-year-old entertainer assaulted them. Cosby is charged with drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004 at his Pennsylvania home. Approximately 60 women have accused Cosby of similar attacks, though the Constand

case is the only one to result in a criminal prosecution. The former star of the 1980s TV series “The Cosby Show,” who built a long career on family-friendly comedy, has denied assaulting anyone and has portrayed all of the encounters as consensual. In general, a defendant’s prior bad acts are not admissible as evidence that he or she committed a particular crime. Prosecutors, however, are allowed on rare occasions to use evidence or witnesses to prove a defendant committed a crime as part of a longstanding pattern of behavior. Judges typically weigh the value of such evidence against the possibility that it will unfairly prejudice a jury. In incidents dating to the 1960s, all 13 women claim Cosby offered them either drinks or pills that left them disoriented and then sexually assaulted them in strikingly similar circumstances. Kevin Steele, the district attorney,

said following the hearing that the women had all agreed to appear as witnesses. The women’s names were not disclosed in court papers filed on Tuesday. But the details of their claims, outlined in the prosecutors’ motion, match those of several women who have come forward publicly. Those accusers include Heidi Thomas, an aspiring actress; Linda Kirkpatrick, who played tennis with Cosby in Las Vegas; Margie Shapiro, a former donut shop employee; and Rebecca Lynn Neal, a masseuse. Some of the women are represented by the highprofile civil rights attorney Gloria Allred. Cosby’s lawyers did not address the motion in court but said in a statement following the hearing that Allred’s “campaign against Mr. Cosby builds on racial bias and prejudice.” “The time has come to shine a spotlight on the trampling of Mr. Cosby’s civil rights,” the statement said.

Bill Cosby is helped by an aide as he returns into Courtroom A in the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S. September 6, 2016 “And when the media repeats her accusations - with no evidence, no trial and no jury - we are moved backwards as a country and away from the America that our civil rights leaders sacrificed so much to create.” Allred called the attack “desperate” and “pathetic” in a statement. “This is not an issue of racial bias,” she said. “Instead, it is an issue of

whether or not Mr. Cosby has committed acts of gender sexual violence.” Cosby’s lawyers have filed their own motions seeking to bar certain evidence, including a telephone conversation between Cosby and Constand’s mother that was secretly recorded and a deposition in which the comedian admitted giving Quaaludes to women before sexual encounters.

Apple unveils iPhone 7 but some still waiting for iPhone 8

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) unveiled an iPhone 7 with high-resolution cameras and no headphone jack at its annual launch event Wednesday, though the biggest surprise was the debut of a three-decade-old Nintendo game franchise, Super Mario Bros, on the smartphone. While shares of Apple barely budged, Nintendo’s (7974.T) U.S.-listed shares jumped 29 pct on investors’ hopes that Super Mario would be another mobile gaming hit for the Japanese company akin to the wildly popular Pokemon Go. Much of the presentation headed by Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook was devoted to technical details of photography, wireless earphones, games from Nintendo, and a new version of Apple watch - with fitness features. The biggest iPhone technical improvements all had leaked, and Apple itself spoiled the surprise by sending out tweets of some details before Cook spoke. The company then deleted the messages. Apple has reported declines in iPhone sales for the last two quarters, which raised the stakes for the iPhone 7. Some consumers and analysts are considering waiting until 2017. “Just gonna wait on iPhone 8 cuz it’s the 10th anniversary of iPhone,” Tweeted @LewBruh near the end of the event. “Ya know they gonna do something big.” But Mike Binger, senior

The Apple iPhone 7 and Airpods portfolio manager at Gradient Investments LLC in Minneapolis, said the new phone encouraged him that Apple was in good shape for a new sales cycle. “I think the iPhone 7, just from a replacement basis, will be a successful launch,” he said. The world’s best-known technology company said the iPhone 7 would have one, zooming 12-megapixel camera. Starting at $649, it is the same price as the 6S predecessor. The larger 7 ‘Plus’ edition, starting at $769, would feature two cameras, including a telephoto lens. Apple also removed the analog headphone jack from both new models, as was widely expected. The new headphones supplied by Apple with the phone will plug into the same port as the recharging cord, making it incompatible with most wired

headphones without an adaptor. Apple includes the adapter. The phones will also work with Apple’s new wireless headphones, called Air Pods, available in late October at a price of $159. The disappearance of the headphone jack “will probably annoy a certain amount of people” but they would likely get over it, Binger said. Apple described dropping the jack as an act of courage as it moved toward a wireless future with the optional Air Pods. Getting rid of the jack also increased room for stereo speakers, and Apple sharpened the technology on most features, from the camera to a pressure-sensitive home button to a boost in memory. The new phone will start shipping in major markets, including the United States and China, on Sept. 16.

Bob O’Donnell of research firm TECHnalysis said Apple’s new glossy black finish could be more popular than any tech feature, reflecting the slowdown in major tech innovations for smartphones. “While the camera improvements for the iPhone 7 Plus are nice, they are incremental for most and the lack of headphone jacks could offset that for others,” he said. Apple typically gives its main product, which accounts for more than half of its revenue, a big makeover every other year and the last major redesign was the iPhone 6 in 2014. Many are expecting a three-year cycle this time, culminating in a major redesign for 2017 to be called iPhone 8. Apple said its Apple Watch Series 2, with a swim-proof casing, will be available in more than 25 countries starting on Sept. 16. “I predict Watch sales will improve dramatically,” said Tech analyst Patrick Moorhead. “Most of the current Watch owners are early adopters and the next wave could be 10 times the size of that market.” Apple also launched a new version of the device called the Apple Watch Nike+, in partnership with the athletic goods manufacturer Nike Inc (NKE.N), featuring GPS so athletes can track their runs. Shares of Fitbit Inc (FIT.N), which makes activity-tracking bands, closed down 2 percent on the emergence of such a high-profile competitor.

Happy landings: 3 space station crew members back on Earth After watching more than 2,750 sunrises from above the Earth, three crew members of the International Space Station returned to the planet for a sparkling sunrise back on Earth Wednesday. A record-setting American astronaut and his two Russian colleagues felt the sun beat down on them on a cloudless morning after a six-month trek in orbit. NASA’s Jeff Williams returned as the U.S. record holder for time in orbit, logging 534 days in space over four missions. Williams, Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka logged 72.8 million miles in space, circling the globe 2,752 times before landing on target in the south central steppes of Kazakhstan just 23 minutes after sunrise Wednesday, 7:13 a.m. local

time (1:13 a.m. GMT). Stretched out in chairs placed in the brown wild grass, the three flyers were all smiles, giving thumbs up, chatting on cell phones. They were promptly pulled out of the Russian Soyuz capsule, which landed on its side, which is not unusual. Williams wore a black baseball cap while seated outside and talking on the phone. Ovchinin clutched a stuffed doll his daughter gave him as a mascot that went into space with him. They were then carried to a medical tent for routine tests to see how they adjust to gravity, including checking to see how they could stand. The trio undocked from the space station nearly three and a half hours before touchdown in hazy sunshine with a comfortable

welcome home temperature around 66 degrees (19 degrees Celsius) about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Zhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. They landed thanks to a large orange and white parachute and last second engine firings. NASA spokesman Dan Huot called it a “picturesque landing” on a picture-perfect day. The three conducted experiments aboard the space station. Williams set the U.S. record last month for most time spent in space. He beat the previous record set by Scott Kelly during his year in orbit. The capsule contained air samples returned from the first inflatable module deployed in orbit. The world record is held by Russian Gennady Padalka at 879 days in space. Thirteen Russians have more

Honda recalls 668,000 more cars in Japan over Takata air bags Honda Motor Co (7267.T) on Thursday said it was recalling about 668,000 vehicles in Japan to replace air bag inflators supplied by Takata Corp (7312.T), as part of an expanded nationwide recall announced earlier this year. Japan’s second-largest automaker said it had recalled models including its Fit subcompact hatchback model, and the Civic

and Accord sedan models over passenger-side air bags. Vehicles produced between 2009 and 2011 were affected, it added. The latest announcement takes Honda’s global tally of recalled air bags to about 51 million, around half of the roughly 100 million slated for recall worldwide over inflators which are at risk of exploding with excessive force.

Defective air bags have been linked to at least 14 deaths and 150 injuries worldwide, and are at the center of the auto industry’s biggest ever product recall. Thursday’s recall comes after Japan’s transport ministry in May ordered automakers to recall an additional 7 million vehicles in Japan equipped with Takata air bag inflators which do not contain

a drying agent, in phases by 2019, following an expanded recall by U.S. transport authorities. Without a drying agent, the ammonium nitrate-based propellant used in Takata inflators has a tendency to explode violently following prolonged exposure to hot, humid conditions, spraying metal shrapnel into vehicle compartments.

Sony unveils new versions of PlayStation 4

Sony Interactive Entertainment, a division of Sony Corp (6758.T), unveiled on Wednesday two new versions of its PlayStation 4 Console in an effort to help Sony maintain its sales lead over Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.T). The PlayStation 4 Pro, which will launch Nov. 10, will support higher resolution and more realistic imagery by enabling 4k resolution and higher dynamic range (HDR), said Andrew House, chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, at a PlayStation event in New York City Tuesday announcing the new products. The console will cost $399. Additionally, the company unveiled a slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient version of its PlayStation 4 Console, which will come out Sept. 15 and will cost $299. PlayStation Pro, whose code name is “Neo,” will support Sony’s virtual reality headset, due to launch in October. The PlayStation VR headset will go on sale in the United States on Oct. 13 with 50 titles available by the end of the year, the company has said. Additionally, Sony will make an upgrade available that will enable all 40 million users of its PlayStation 4 console to upgrade to HDR, House said.

A Sony PlayStation 4 Pro Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) will launch a new app when the console launches with 600 hours of 4k content, including its hit crime series “Narcos,” House said. Google’s YouTube unit is also planning an app for PS 4 Pro, he said. Since the 2013 launch, Sony has sold more than 40 million units of the PlayStation 4 console, far outpacing Microsoft Corp’s XBox One and Nintendo’s Wii U. Sony has said the games

business is set to be its biggest growth driver, helped by strong PS4 console sales, a rise in subscribers to its PlayStation network and the launch of its virtual reality headset. In the financial year through March 2017, Sony expects the gaming unit to account for 45 percent of its overall operating profit. Sony forecasts PS4 sales at 20 million units for this financial year, up from the previous year’s 17.7 million units.

Apple hones marketing for Watch with focus on fitness

Two years after unveiling the Apple Watch with apps and styles that tried to appeal to every need and every customer, Apple Inc has honed its marketing strategy, debuting a second generation product aimed squarely at the health and athletic audience. The focus on fitness will enhance the watch’s appeal to its core audience but also cements its status as a niche device, analysts said. “Apple is responding to what has resonated with customers,” said analyst Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research. “The problem is there are only so many people who want to wear a health and fitness device. If they want this to be really massive, they’re going to have to go broader.” The first new device released under Chief Executive Tim Cook, the Apple Watch has not attracted a mass audience, selling 1.6 million units in the second quarter, down more than half from a year ago, in the runup to the new version, IDC data showed. Apple’s original pitch touted the ability to send doodles, make phone calls and track fitness, while the company described it as essentially a fashion accessory.

The Apple Watch Series 2 But at a San Francisco launch event on Wednesday, where the iPhone 7 also debuted, Apple Watch videos, advertisements and demos focused narrowly on features for health enthusiasts, with the notable exception of a Pokemon Go app. The new Watch starts at $369, includes a GPS chip, and is waterproof. Apple designed a special edition with sports giant Nike Inc. Exercise buffs on social media cheered the new features, particularly the internal GPS system designed for runners who want to track workouts without dragging along their phones. “At last Apple Watch is something I can use as a runner,” Ian Bignell (@eyan_b) wrote on Twitter. Still, the device is likely

to remain a niche offering, said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Partners. “It’s becoming a more interesting product, but it is not going to be able to meaningfully impact the bottom line if iPhones slow down,” Gillis said. Apple has not broken out Watch sales, but Wall Street analysts suspect it is a small and growing contributor. Sanford Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates the watch will generate $4.1 billion in revenue for Apple this year, up from $2.7 billion in 2015. IDC analyst Ryan Reith called the new version a “great incremental improvement” and predicted it would outsell the first version, in part because of its appeal to the fitness audience. But he said it faced challenges, such as competing with smartphones for consumer spending. While the focus on fitness helps, Apple still needs a breakthrough app to nudge the smartwatch into the mainstream – and it remains unlikely to find it in Pokemon Go, the popular augmented reality game that is coming to the gadget later this year, Gillis said. “The killer app for the watch remains to be seen,” he said.

Daimler plans at least six electric car models

The Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive German carmaker Daimler (DAIGn.DE) plans to roll out at least six, and possibly as many as nine, electric car models as part of its push to compete with Tesla (TSLA.O) and Volkswagen’s (VOWG_p.DE) Audi, a person familiar with Daimler’s plans told Reuters. The maker of Mercedes-Benz cars remains on track to unveil a new electric car at the Paris motor show next month. In July, the German carmaker said it had accelerated development of premium electric cars, a segment currently dominated by United States-based rival Tesla. German trade magazine Automobilwoche earlier cited company sources as saying Daimler would bring to market more than six electric car models between 2018 and 2024. German firms are investing heavily in electric cars, a segment once neglected by the industry as customers shunned their limited operating range and high cost. But a growing political backlash against diesel fumes and recent advances in battery technology to increase the reach of an electric car by up to 50 percent have spurred major investments by Volkswagen, Daimler and suppliers such as Bosch [ROBG.UL] and Continental (CONG.DE). Reuters’ source said Mercedes would also make an SUV model with a plug-in hybrid engine powered by fuel cells, which would have a range of up to 50 km (30 miles) on battery power and would then run on electricity generated by hydrogen.

Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson insisted Thursday that she was not the female version of Jamaican teammate Usain Bolt, who sealed a treble-treble of Olympic golds in last month’s Rio Games. Thompson blasted to victories in both the 100 and 200 metres in the Brazilian city to mirror Bolt’s feat and is unbeaten this season, having got the better of Dutch rival Dafne Schippers, who beat her to the world 200m title in Beijing last season. “Oh no, I’m not the next Usain Bolt!” she said ahead of Friday’s season-ending Diamond League meet in Brussels when she will be up against Schippers once again. “Usain is unique, I guess Thompson clinched gold in the women's 100m and 200m in Rio that I am just the next Elaine Thompson.” grabs for the winner of the 100m There is now a pressure that Thompson set a personal best over discipline, wasn’t there before. 100m of 10.70 seconds in winning will be decided on Friday, “It would have been a Olympic gold, meaning the Thompson enjoying a narrow distraction going back to Jamaica Brussels meet record of 10.72sec lead over Schippers going into the and I think there are going to set by Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in race at the King be some things planned when I 2013 could be under threat. Usain Bolt finally responds to infidelity accusations on Instagram Usain bolt has addressed speculation over his relationship with his girlfriend Kasi Bennett after photographs appearing to show him with another woman surfaced. Bolt defended his title as the fastest man in the world at the Rio games in August, winning his ninth Olympic gold medal. Days later, his name made it into the headlines for very different reasons. Several pictures, including one of him with 20-year-old Brazilian student Jady Duarte and another of him dancing with another woman in a Rio nightclub soon spread over the internet. The reports also claimed Bolt was in a two-year relationship with Kasi Bennett. On Wednesday, the Jamaican sprinter shared a photograph of himself and Bennett holidaying in the French Polynesian island Bora Bora along with a cryptic caption dismissing the week-old reports. If you believe what you read, then you don’t know us,” he wrote to his 5.1 million followers. Bennett, who was an active supporter of Bolt during the Games regularly sharing encouraging photos of her boyfriend, also posted a picture of the couple, writing: “All that matters”, alongside a lightning bolt emoji.

Goodell doesn't agree with Kaepernick's actions

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell NEW YORK NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell disagrees with Colin Kaepernick's choice to kneel during the national anthem, but recognizes the quarterback's right to protest. Asked by The Associated Press about Kaepernick's decision not to stand before games when the national anthem is played, Goodell said Wednesday: "I don't necessarily agree with what he is doing." "I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don't live in a perfect society," Goodell added. "On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL. I personally believe very strongly in that." Goodell added that NFL players having a visible platform for their viewpoints. With that comes responsibility to use those platforms properly. "We have to choose

respectful ways of doing that so that we can achieve the outcomes we ultimately want and do it with the values and ideals that make our country great," said Goodell, whose late father, Charles, was a U.S. senator. "I think it's important to have respect for our country, for our flag, for the people who make our country better; for law enforcement; and for our military who are out fighting for our freedoms and our ideals." The San Francisco 49ers quarterback wouldn't stand for the anthem at the team's preseason games, with teammate Eric Reid and Seattle's Jeremy Lane doing the same. Kaepernick has cited racial injustice and police brutality among the many reasons for his actions and said he plans to continue to not stand for the anthem during the regular season.

Woods intends to make competitive return next month

Tiger Woods announced on Wednesday that he hopes to make his competitive return to golf next month, beginning with the PGA Tour's Safeway Open in Napa, California, after spending more than a year on the sidelines. The 14-times major winner also said, depending on "my continued progress and recovery", that he intends to compete at the Turkish Airlines Open in November and the Tiger Woods Foundation-run Hero World Challenge in December. Woods, the greatest player of his generation and arguably of all time, has not played competitive golf since the Wyndham Championship in late August 2015 and has been recovering from multiple back surgeries. " My rehabilitation is to the point where I'm comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do," Woods said in a statement posted on his website. "Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go." The Safeway Open, the season-opening event on the 2016-17 PGA Tour, will be played from Oct. 13-16 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa. Woods missed all four majors in a calendar year for the first time in 2016, and made just 11 tournament appearances in 2015.

BLIGHTED BY INJURIES Since the end of 2013, the former world number one has competed in only 18 events on the PGA Tour while being blighted by injuries and poor form, recording just one top10 during that period along with six missed cuts and three withdrawals. "It was difficult missing tournaments that are important to me, but this time I was smart about my recovery and didn't rush it," said Woods, who will celebrate his 41st birthday in December. "It was great spending time with my children Sam and Charlie, and also working on a lot of projects including golf-course design, the upcoming 20th anniversary of my foundation and my book about the 1997 Masters. "But I missed competing," said Woods, whose ongoing back problems led to surgeries in September and again in October. "I want to thank all the fans for their kindness and concern. I've been a pro about 20 years, and their support has never waned." Australian world number one Jason Day, preparing for this week's BMW Championship in Indiana, told reporters on Wednesday he was glad to hear about Woods' planned comeback. "It's great ... probably a lot of anticipation to see how the state of his game is," Day said. "I'm definitely looking forward to watching those tournaments and

Woods, a child prodigy who was introduced to golf before the age of two, has not won a tournament anywhere since the 2013 WGCBridgestone Invitational and his title drought in the major championships dates back to the 2008 U.S. Open.

A 79-times winner on the PGA Tour, he was world number one for a record total of 683 weeks but his form has slipped dramatically in recent years due to injuries and the mastering of a new swing while his ranking has plummeted to a mindboggling 711th after his long spell on the sidelines.

Timeline: Tiger Woods' professional golfing career

Tiger Woods The following timeline charts the professional career of American golfer Tiger Woods: 1997 - Woods, 21, wins the first of 14 career major titles with a 12-stroke victory over Tom Kite at the Masters, making him both the youngest golfer and the first black professional to triumph at Augusta National. Two months later, he was ranked number one in the world for the first time in his career. 2000 - Completes a career

grand slam by the age of 24 with wins at the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship, making him the youngest player ever to win all four major golf titles and just the second to win three majors in a year. 2001 - Won the second of his four Masters titles, to become the first person to hold all four of professional golf's major championships simultaneously - the so-called 'Tiger Slam’. 2008 - Won his 14th and most

recent major at the U.S. Open by beating Rocco Mediate on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff at Torrey Pines following an 18-hole playoff, despite playing with damaged knee cartilage and two stress fractures of the leg. 2009 - Weeks after being involved in a bizarre car accident outside his home that ballooned into a sex scandal, Woods says in December that he is taking an indefinite break from professional golf after admitting he cheated on his wife. 2010 - Makes his return to professional golf with a fourthplace finish at the Masters in April. In October, after a run of 281 weeks, Woods is unseated from the world number ranking by Lee Westwood, ending the record for most consecutive weeks at that position. 2013 - Captures his most recent PGA Tour victory with a triumph at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August, giving him 79 career wins, three short of the all-time mark held by Sam Snead. 2014 - A week before the Masters in April, Woods announces that he requires back surgery, forcing

him to miss the year's opening major for the first time since 1994. He returned to competition in July but reinjured his back the following month. 2014 - After 60 consecutive weeks, Woods is knocked from the world number one ranking in May, marking the last time he occupied that top spot. 2015 - Posts the worst score of his professional career in June after carding a mind-boggling 13-over-par 85 in the third round of the Memorial tournament in Ohio. 2015 - After seemingly being injury-free for most of the year, Woods had a second microdisectomy performed in September with a followup procedure six weeks later, forcing him to shut down his playing schedule indefinitely. 2016 - In April, he plays his first stretch of holes in eight months at a golf course opening in Montgomery, Texas 2016 - On Sept. 7, Woods announces that he hopes to make his competitive return to golf at the PGA Tour's Oct. 13-16 Safeway Open in Napa, California, after spending more than a year on the sidelines.
