Color us excited for a bright new year -and all-new color to match. The color experts at Pantone are celebrating those who dare to showcase courageous presence, while also encouraging personal inventiveness and creativity. “Very Peri,” Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year was chosen to help us “embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.” According to Pantone, the color is emblematic of a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family. The hue encompasses the qualities of blues that also boasts a subtle violet-red undertone. Very Peri is best characterized for its spritely display of attitude that is balanced by its potential for imaginative expression. “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us”.

he foundations of architecture were laid in the 1st century BC when Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius defined the three guiding pillars of architectural design: • Firmitas: strength • Utilitas: utility / usefulness • Venustas: beauty

Today, El Paso’s own Root Architects, led by Rida Asfahani, AIA, and Christopher Esper, Assoc. AIA, is growing El Paso’s architectural landscape one project at a time using the same guiding principles that guided the Romans. From their award-winning coworking space, Working Capitol, featured in the October 2021 issue of The City Magazine, to TI:ME at Montecillo, and the two projects featured in this issue, St. Rogers Depot and No Vacancy, projects by Root Architects are as aesthetically pleasing as they are a challenge to the talented architects to continue to grow their vision for El Paso.

forgotten icon stood neglected for decades while

trying to find its post-railroad modern identity in the formerly wild West.

St. Rogers Depot is a historic landmark that once served as a railroad and freight depot for El Paso and the Southwest. The 1903 Italianate terminal is now owned by Steve Santamaria, who purchased the building at an auction in 2017 and breathed new life into the space that draws on El Paso’s rich history in an effort to give back to the community. Santamaria renamed the grand building after his wife Isha Rogers’ father, former El Paso mayor Jonathan Rogers, and St. Rogers Depot opened its doors for its debut event as a venue in January 2020 for sold-out performances of “Pagliacci” by the El Paso Opera. The historic renovation and adaptive reuse project was completed in 2019 by Root Architects. Rida Asfahani, the principal architect at Root Architects,

says the building sat sad and deserted at the doorstep of downtown for years before receiving much-needed modern updates that maintained its historic integrity. “The successful revitalization efforts of this property help to underscore the importance of preserving older structures, and consequently, preserving our communal history,” says Asfahani. Root Architects meticulously restored the building alongside masons who cleaned and repaired the existing brickwork; carpenters who revived the trusses, floors, and ceilings; and tile workers who expertly created an oldworld ambiance within the renovated space. Modern updates included high-performing windows crafted in the image of the existing ones that were either damaged or removed. Today, the striking brick facade and vivid green roof coalesce in a visual contrast that is reminiscent of El Paso’s past that also shines a bright light on the city’s future under the stars.
