A TEMPORARY reprieve for Barrack Street Garda Station should be used as an opportunity to ensure a permanent garda presence is maintained in the area, a meeting at UCC has been told. At the information evening last week — organised as part of the roll-out of plans to close four stations in Cork — residents, community leaders and gardaà heard plans to close the station at Elizabeth Fort in January were stalled but that it would be closed at some stage in 2013. Superintendent Barry McPolin assured the audience that community policing would not change following the eventual closure of the station, and claimed it would lead to more gardaà on the beat in the Barrack Street district (which includes Ballphehane, the Lough, Turner’s Cross and Greenmount). Local Independent councillor Mick Finn said that a garda presence on Barrack Street was required to ensure the proper policing of an area with some 40,000 residents augmented during the academic year by college students. � Continued on page 15.
