Historic move for cathedral scouts THE 2nd Cork Group attached to St Fin Barre’s Cathedral are to move to Douglas.
Due to falling numbers the group was faced with a very difficult decision — either close or move. A decision has now been reached to move to Douglas Scout Hall — which is situated across the road from Canon Packham Hall — on a trial basis until September when the position will be reviewed. The 6th/47th Cork (Douglas) have very kindly offered the use of the hall on Thursday nights and they will be able to increase their numbers from their waiting lists and new members. Most of their membership is from the Douglas area and they hope to provide a better service to their youth members by moving. The beaver colony in St Fin Barre’s has now closed and moved to Douglas, while the cub scouts will be moving on February 14 and the scout troop and rovers will move in April. Paul Colton they will continue to use the bishop’s yard for storage. In 1930 it was decided to set up a scout troop to provide activities for the boys in the choir of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. The first scoutmaster was the Rev Charles Allen, the resident preacher in the cathedral; he had previous scouting experience and was involved with a troop in Father Mathew Hall. � See page 12 for more.

Capture those precious early years with a Barry’s snap THE annual Evening Echo Barry’s Photographic Portrait Competition, now in its 38th year, has got off to a super start. Parents often say that they must get a nice portrait of their child, yet keep putting it off. This is your opportunity to capture your child, or children, in a moment in time. Memories fade but the portrait brings all those memories back to life. Portraits are being taken each day at Barry’s Studio in Pembroke Street and this weekend on Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17, they will also be at Wilton Shopping Centre. No appointments are necessary. Judging of all entries under different categories will take place, and prizes will be given to the winners. Portraits close on March 9.
