Crucial meeting on future of Mahon A DRAFT plan for the future of Mahon will be discussed by city councillors tonight in City Hall.
The draft of the Mahon Local Area Plan was given to councillors last week and is expected to go out to public consultation in the coming weeks. The plan will act as blueprint for the future development of the entire area. Work on drawing up the plan began two years ago. It looks at the issues of zoning areas for industrial use, with a view to job creation. It also examines the provision of amenities and infrastructure. Also under the spotlight in the report are civic and community infrastructures, land use and environmental assessments and objectives. Originally the city council planned to draw up a local area plan for the southern area of Mahon. However, concern expressed by locals led to the development of a plan to take in the whole of Mahon. He added: “There is a lot of detail in the report.� Cllr O’Leary welcomed the fact that the entire area of Mahon had been considered for the report, instead of just one part of it. He added: “There have been a lot of contributions made to it from the business sector, developers, the community and statutory agencies.�
