‘We need your help to honour the heroes of our city’ THE Lord Mayor has called for nominations for this year’s Community and Voluntary Awards. Now in their tenth year, the awards recognise the valuable contribution the community and voluntary sector make to the life of the city. They are presented by Cork City Council and sponsored by the Evening Echo and Express Kitchen and Floors. The Lord Mayor, Cllr John Buttimer, said the awards “affirm the value of the work done and of can do attitude of the different groups. The awards will be presented to a number of different categories, including community and neighbourhood services; sports; arts and culture; equality and social inclusion; children and youth. Cllr Buttimer said: “It would be impossible to put an economic or social value on the work being undertaken by the community and voluntary sector. Much of the work, while proactive and positive in focus, also has the consequence of

preventing other issues or difficulties from emerging. “Youth cafes for teenagers provide safe places for them to meet, ensuring that they do not have to congregate or get into difficulty in other locations; a friendly call service for an elderly person means that they feel more comfortable living in their own home in the community and might not need more formal care; an adult returning to adult literacy classes opens up the possibility of future training or employment. “There are so many other examples of where the community and voluntary sector make invaluable contributions to their own area. In my experience, these individuals and organisations are the fabric and the very essence of community. They help define who we are and what is important to us. They add significantly to the quality of life and, by doing so, enrich all of us. The winners will receive their awards at a ceremony in City Hall on May 22. For more on how to nominate, see page 11.
