Music website gets chorus of approval A NEW initiative to help us learn choral arrangements of traditional Irish songs has been launched. Choirs Can launched as part of the Cork International Choral Festival, and provides a range of ways to learn and teach eight folk favourites on their website www.choirscan.com. Many people will already be familiar with the melodies of the songs, which were all included in &DV $PKUĂ„Q, the 1975 collection of songs assembled by MĂchĂĄel Ă“ hEidhin that can be

found in homes and schools across the country. The Choirs Can project, lead by Deirdre Moynihan, is aimed at secondary school or non-professional choirs and contains brand new arrangements by Deirdre, Mark Armstrong and Andrew Synnott — all well-established Irish composers. Each of the songs can be downloaded in songpacks that include printable sheet music; a recording by the vocal ensemble Moving Voices; a

spoken recording of the Irish words and a further series of recordings with each voice made more prominent in turn. As well as being audio tracks that each part of the choir can sing along to separately, these are pronunciation tools for the Irish language. Deidre said: “This will be a valuable resource for choirs in Ireland, and will have huge appeal for international choirs who are constantly seeking new Irish choral arrangements.
