Mayfield Community Awards aim to acknowledge the contribution of volunteers, whose efforts make up the fabric of the community. Superintendent Tom Myers, pictured, praised volunteers in the area for their fruitful efforts and described the initiative as a means of bringing the community together. “My main hope is that the awards will promote voluntary work in the area and encourage young people to follow in the footsteps of these unsung heroes.â€? The superintendent also hopes that the awards will serve to bridge the gap between gardaĂ and residents of the area: “We want to shed the “us and themâ€? mentality that exists in some young people and let them know that gardaĂ are approachable people who have the interests of the community at heart.â€? Chief Superintendent at Mayfield Garda Station Michael Finn said he was honoured to be selected as a judge for the awards, which take place in September at SilverSprings Moran Hotel.
“For me a true volunteer is someone who is humble and not driven by the glorification of charity work. They are selfless and genuinely committed to their community.â€? Cork North Central councillor John Kelleher also commended the introduction of the Mayfield honorary system. “The judges will be hard pressed to find a winner, which is testament to the high number of locals making contributions to the area,â€? he said. The idea was the brainchild of Mayfield Community Association members Joe Mullane and BrĂd Houlihan, who wanted to recognise the pillars holding the community together. Six awards will be presented at the event including the Special Achievement Award and Hall of Fame Award. Application forms are available from St Joseph’s Community Centre on the Old Youghal Road in Mayfield. For further details contact 4500538. The closing date for nominations is Friday, June 28, at 4pm.
