Growing support for city and county to merge into one...

Super council THERE is growing support among politicians and business leaders for a merger of Cork city and county councils into one regional assembly to provide a powerful voice for the region.

wards the idea, but the stance has softened in recent months. Cork’s biggest business lobby group, Cork Chamber, has also called for a merger, and Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has indicated that he would support such a move. A suggestion has now been put forward that Cork voters, at the next local elections in 2014, be asked for their views on the issue as part of the balloting process. ● Continued on page two.

GARDAÍ have renewed their appeal for witnesses to an assault in the city centre yesterday morning which left a man with serious facial injuries. Gardaí at Anglesea Street garda station are investigating the assault which occurred between 12.30am and 1.45am at the junction of Lavitt’s Quay and Patrick’s Bridge. A 36-year-old man sustained serious facial injuries and is being treated at Cork University Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening. A garda spokesperson said the help of the public was always vital in an investigation such as this and that any information would be treated in confidence. Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street garda station on (021) 4522000.
