A CORK dad said when his daughter emigrated from Cork to Toronto it was like ‘somebody had shut the electricity off in their home.’ Will Roche from Whitechurch is among the thousands of families, from Cork and around the country, feeling the heartbreak of emigration caused by the country’s lack of employment opportunities for young people. He was at Cork airport yesterday saying farewell to his daughter, Delia, who was returning to Canada after Christmas. “She went and it was like somebody had shut off the electricity,” he said. “Delia has always been a live wire and is an extraordinary presence in the house which might explain why we miss her so much when she is not around. “To have her back for Christmas was wonderful, but it is always difficult to say goodbye. Her mum is very upset too as our children are the love of our lives. “Young people fail to comprehend the level of trauma that comes with saying goodbye to a son or daughter. They are embarking on an adventure, but for those who are left behind an empty house is very

lonely and can seem like a pre-cursor to the future.” Delia left because of the country’s economic situation and now works for a mortgage lending company. “It is heartbreaking to have to leave your family and each time is equally distressing, but technology
