CORK Penny Dinners served Christmas dinner to more than 100 people this year — an increase of almost 500% in two years. The long-standing charity served 25 people in 2010, 85 in 2011 and 120 this Christmas Day. An Evening Echo campaign for the community to support Cork Penny Dinners was a runaway success and helped feed thousands of people, according to the organisation that provides more than 1,000 meals every week to the city’s needy. The campaign helped to raise approximately €60,000 when it took place in October. However, this wasn’t the only bene-

Volunteer coordinator Caitriona Twomey said: “The Evening Echo was an absolute Godsend — thanks to the campaign we’ve had a huge spike in people volunteering, monetary donations, food drops, and more. I can’t stress enough how much it helped. “Quite simply, thanks to the Evening Echo, people in Cork will not go hungry. “We had up to 120 here on Christmas Day and we were able to give
everyone a gift on top of their meal. “The impact of the Evening Echo’s website and social media was also a factor with donations coming from outside of Cork. “Nobody likes to see someone go hungry and the campaign appealed to people’s basic instinctive compassion. “Christmas Day was very special in that we were able to provide those eating with a gift and a party atmosphere.
