Cork chosen for educated and skilled workforce
Chinese smartphone and device manufacturer Huawei announced today they are creating 50 jobs in new research and development centres in Cork and Dublin. The majority of these will be located in Cork city, where they already have a small presence at Webworks and 12 of the positions have already been filled. The company also said the centres may expand further in the future. The new staff will initially focus on Huawei’s customer experience product SmartCare before expanding to other projects. Derek Ding, Managing Director
of Huawei Ireland, said Cork and Dublin were chosen for their well-educated, skilled workforce. The jobs have been created with the support of the IDA. Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland said the announcement was a vote of confidence in Ireland’s technological capability. Cork’s Senator Deirdre Clune said Cork has experienced a boost in job creation from companies like Apple and Eli Lilly in 2012. Cork Chamber CEO Conor Healy said Huawei’s decision further substantiates the strength of the Cork region as a location of choice
