THE murder of a garda during an armed robbery last night has been described as a brutal killing that would anger and sadden the people of Ireland. Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, right, a married father of three young children, was gunned down by raiders in an attempted robbery from a County Louth credit union. Government Minister and Cork TD Simon Coveney said he was travelling back from Northern Ireland and through Dundalk when he heard the news. “The murder of this garda, who was doing his duty, will shock and anger everyone. His wife and family are now having to come to terms with his death,” he said. “It highlights the difficult job the gardaí do in putting

themselves in danger to protect others.” Garda John Parker based in Mallow, President of the Garda Representative Association, said there was deep shock across An Garda Síochána and Irish society at the killing. “This dreadful news is what every police family fears. At this time the wider garda family will be doing everything possible to support the late garda’s relatives and loved ones, friends and colleagues.”

Detective Donohoe, whose wife and brother are also members of the gardaí, was one of two detectives on escort duty when the incident occurred. It is understood four men were waiting to rob Lordship Credit Union at Bellurgan, Jenkinstown, seven miles from Dundalk. The detectives approached the men who opened fire on them, shooting Garda Donohoe before they fled in a grey Volkswagen Passat. He was pronounced dead a short while later. President Michael D Higgins led the tributes today saying he was deeply shocked by the murder. “This is a dreadful crime and all Irish people will be truly appalled by it.” Justice Minister Alan Shatter described the killing as a brutal murder and said no effort would be spared in bringing those responsible for the murder to justice.

AFTER a 21-year wait Cork basketball kingpins Bord Gáis Neptune finally got their hands on the national cup title again. Inspired by Michael McGinn, who shot 28 points, and their captain Ger Noonan, the northside club captured their first cup since 1992 with an awesome display against holders UL Eagles last night. Neptune hadn’t won a national title since the SuperLeague back in 2003, while great rivals UCC Demons were the dominant force of the noughties. However women’s side Team Montenotte Hotel couldn’t upset the odds against UL Huskies in the opener. ● See sport for more.
