THE betrayal of Blackpool is how locals today described the closure of their village post office after 100 years in business. The post office, which handled 6,000 transactions a week, will from Monday operate from the nearby shopping centre, despite a massive local campaign fought to keep it in its current central location A petition of more than 6,000 signatures, two city centre demonstrations, mass meetings and a pledge by some locals to move their business to the local credit union, failed to convince An Post to do a U-turn on their decision. The main concern among the community is the effect the move will have on its elderly residents. Socialist Party councillor Mick Barry said: “Blackpool

Residents of Blackpool and customers outside the Post Office as it closes its doors today after 100 years in the village. It moves to the shopping centre on Monday. Picture: Larry Cummins has been betrayed.” But Public Affairs Manager for An Post Angus Laverty

said: “We are happy to have the post office open on Monday and have no doubt that, in

time, residents of the village will change their opinion in relation to this decision.”
