By RONAN BAGNALL THE Society of St Vincent de Paul spent more than €4 million in Cork last year helping struggling families pay for food, fuel bills and back-to-school costs. Figures just released by Ireland’s largest charity have revealed a dramatic rise in the number of families who require help with basic items. The Cork office received a record 15,809 calls for assistance last year— an average of almost 45 calls a day — which represents a 123% increase over the last four years. In 2009, there were 7,084 calls to the Tuckey Street office in Cork, at a time when recession had taken hold of the country. That figure rose to 13,839 by 2011 and continued to increase to 15,809 last year. These numbers exclude the thousands of other people who turned directly to local parish

conferences of SVP for help, so the true figure is much higher than the official numbers. To meet the demand for help, St Vincent de Paul spent around €4million in Cork last year on direct assistance — food,
fuel bills and back to school costs. This excludes money the charity spends each year on its hostels, clothing banks and shops around the city and county. ● See page two for more
