Garda hitman probe continues
GARDAÍ were continuing to hold a former politician today who was arrested in Cork city after allegedly trying to hire a hitman to murder three people. It’s understood that the man has been in an extremely agitated state since his detention yesterday at Gurranabraher Garda Station. The ex-politician and businessman is accused of conspiring to murder a fraud squad garda, a revenue official and an accountant who were thought to be involved in an investigation into his financial affairs. at his home outside Cork city. It is believed that he approached an associate about possibly hiring a professional hitman, but that person then reported the incident to gardaí — who launched an undercover operation. This led to a meeting between the suspect and an officer posing as a contract killer around two weeks ago and subsequently led to the man’s arrest yesterday. It’s understood the suspect offered a significant sum of money to arrange the murders, thought to be around €10,000.
Gardaí alerted the intended targets of the suspected conspiracy, before moving yesterday morning to arrest the man. The arrest is being linked to a wider investigation over recent months that includes other threatening behaviour towards a Revenue official and an accountant. The man was previously questioned about offences under the Criminal Justice Fraud and Theft Act, but was released without charge. He was being questioned today at Gurranabraher Garda Station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act and he can be held for up to seven days.
Edward Bryan to be sentenced FORMER Christian Brother Edward Bryan, who was last week found guilty on seven counts of indecently assaulting boys at the North Monastery Secondary School in Cork in the Eighties, was due to be sentenced today.

Bryan, of Martinvilla, Trim, Co. Meath, had denied 10 counts of indecently assaulting four boys at the North Monastery on dates between September 1, 1984 and June 30, 1990. He was remanded in custody last Thursday until today.
