Drink-drive charge Cllr ‘fled garda checkpoint’ By PADRAIG HOARE
A CORK county councillor drove off from a garda checkpoint, was chased on foot by a garda and found hiding in a bush minutes later, a court heard yesterday.
Michael Hegarty, of Moanroe, Ladysbridge — a sitting Fine Gael member of Cork County Council — appeared at Youghal District Court charged with drink-driving at Ballymacoda on August 21 last year. The court was told he later said he had consumed four drinks, including two whiskies, on the night. Garda Killian Barry told the court he and Garda Shay Lyons were operating a checkpoint in Ballymacoda in East Cork at 12.35am as the car approached. It stopped, then suddenly turned left away from the checkpoint about 50 metres away. There was a screech of tyres as the car drove off and the gardaí went in pursuit in the patrol car. After making a number of turns, the car entered the car park of the local church and entered onto the grass area. Garda Barry said a male got out of the car and began to run. He said he shouted at the male to stop but he failed to do so. Garda Barry said he gave chase for close to 150 metres. The man turned into a garden of a derelict house and hid in a bush. Garda Barry said he warned the man that he would have to draw his baton, whereupon the man came out and put his hands up, saying: “I’m sorry, I panicked.” The man identified himself WEATHER F TONIGHT

He told Garda Barry he had consumed a “few drinks” on the night, including two in the local greyhound track and two whiskies in a local bar. He told gardaí he had been stupid to drive after agreeing to bring a friend home. He was subsequently arrested after accompanying Garda Barry to the patrol car and gave a sample of his breath, which failed. A breath test at Midleton Garda Station later that morning gave a reading of 61 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. Cllr Hegarty asked the gardai if his car could be moved from where he had left it because he was embarrassed the public would see it there. He was dropped home by gardaí following his arrest and processing for drink driving at the ● Continued on page 2.
