HUNDREDS of children in Douglas have been denied access to proper sports facilities because Cork County Council has failed to deliver on a decade-old pledge to provide lands to local clubs. Frustrated parents and children gathered by greenfield lands in Castletreasure in Douglas yesterday to highlight their frustration at the council’s inability to deliver on promises made to the clubs in
By RONAN BAGNALL 2002. The council bought 29 acres of lands in 2001 and the following year pledged to lease the site to six sports clubs in the Douglas area for pitches, training fields and the development of a gymnastics club. The situation has been described by Fine Gael councillor Deirdre Forde as a “damning indictment” of the council’s ability to deliver what it promised. The council failed to secure an
access route into its own land-locked site, and after a number of setbacks, delays and legal wrangling, it decided to lease the majority of the sports site out for agricultural purposes until 2015. Five of the six sports clubs that were promised the lands never got access to the site. These include Douglas Camogie Club, Douglas Gymnastics Club, Douglas Hall Ladies Soccer Club, Douglas Ladies Football Club and Grangevale AFC. ● See page four.
