Cork event centre — We’ll make it happen Coveney happy to stake reputation on ensuring it becomes a reality A LARGE-SCALE events and conference centre could mean two new hotels for Cork city centre, as well as political conferences coming here, Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has confidently predicted. Minister Coveney told the Evening Echo he is determined that a final decision to begin work on a conference centre will be made this year. “I’m happy to stake my reputation on making that convention centre happen — it’s important that it happens and I think everyone wants to see it happen,” he said, adding that he sees his role in supporting Cork City Council and others to make the centre a reality.

“Cork needs a big events/convention centre, and it is going to happen. It’s a question of where and how it’s funded. I have been working with the city manger in particular and also a number of the councillors to try and make this happen as soon as possible,” he said. Two event centres already have planning permission — a Howard Holdings proposal in the docklands, and a proposal to develop the former Beamish Brewery site by Bam/Heineken. Driver in court over 170kph escapade A LUNCH time driving escapade saw a motorist drive from Cork city to the Blarney area and back again at speeds reaching over 170kph and almost crashing into a

Harvey now hit for e300,000

GARDAÍ now believe up to €300,000 of property was stolen from the Harvey Norman store at Kinsale Road last week. CCTV from the Jack Lynch Tunnel and other areas of the city are being examined at present by gardaí investigating the raid who have now revised upwards the value of goods taken. The store was targeted by the raiders at between 11.30pm on

Wednesday night and 2.30am on Thursday. It is believed the raiders used a large van to transport televisions, vacuum cleaners and other electrical equipment from the store. A similar incident occurred at the Little Island store of Harvey Norman last October when more than €50,000 of equipment was taken in that raid. ● Continued on page two.
