Showcase stadium plan to cost e67m

Páirc facilities will rival top UK premiership grounds

THE redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh into a modern 50,000-capacity stadium is a step closer following last night’s City Council meeting — but local residents have vowed to fight plans for its controversial second pitch. It is expected that a planning application for the new €67m stadium will be lodged shortly after councillors approved the latest draft of the Marina Park plan which has now set out how much land can be used for the stadium’s second pitch. Following last night’s meeting the Cork County GAA Board chairman, Bob Ryan, told the Evening Echo that they want to move ahead “as soon as possible” to refurbish Páirc Uí Chaoimh into a modern sporting venue. “We are anxious to get on with this project and are very anxious to ensure that the concerns of everybody are addressed,” he said. up to 50,000 — similar to Anfield in Liverpool, Stamford Bridge in Chelsea and Yankee Stadium in New York — and could create up to 300 construction jobs. The board wants to demolish the existing covered stand and replace it with a new, two-tier stand along with larger dressing rooms, corporate boxes, medical rooms, a restaurant and a possible GAA museum. However it also includes proposals for a second all-weather pitch on the former Showgrounds land which some residents say will divide the planned new Marina Park. Consultants were asked to produce a draft masterplan for the Marina Park and tasked with integrating the second pitch into the overall design. Their proposal included a 20-metre gap between the stadium and the pitch to create a sense of continuity between ● Continued on page two.
