CUH to recruit 75 nurses as ban lifted By MARIA ROLSTON
CORK University Hospital (CUH) is urgently recruiting up to 75 nurses in order to address issues that led to the cancellation of surgeries at the hospital for a week last month. The HSE has approved the posts in a special exception to the Government-imposed recruitment moratorium within the public sector. However, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) says the hospital is having difficulty filling the posts due to uncertainty
over the future of nurses’ pay. The jobs decision was made following the announcement that a total of 46 medical beds will open at the hospital this year due to overwhelming demands caused by the reconfiguration of surgical services within the region.
CUH has already opened 50% of the beds and recruitment for the new nursing jobs has already begun. However, INMO Cork representative Patsy Doyle said applications for the jobs were low. “CUH is desperately trying to recruit nurses but they can’t fill the posts because of the proposed cut to graduate nurses’ pay as part of Croke Park II,” Ms Doyle said. “The proposal to start nurses’ careers on 80% of current salaries has done more damage to nursing than anything I have seen in my 25-year career. “It’s driving Irish-trained nurses overseas and is wasting the money

SIR Alex Ferguson, above, arrived at Manchester United’s Carrington training complex this morning amid massive speculation an announcement will be made about his future. United did not respond to any requests for information about Ferguson’s position last night. Fergie, regarded as the greatest football manager of all time, was a key figure in the success of Roy Keane and Denis Irwin at Old Trafford.
The announcement could come today, although there was no hint of anything different as he swept into Carrington. A number of prominent managers, including Jose Mourinho, David Moyes and Jurgen Klopp have been mentioned as possible contenders to take over, but Keane does not seem to be in the running to take over the much sought after job. ● See Evening Echo Sport.
that’s been spent on training nurses here. We’re effectively paying to staff the hospitals of the UK and Australia,” she said. The HSE spokesperson said pay rates for the advertised jobs would be dependant on experience, with new entrants being appointed on the 2011 salary scale of €27,211. However, this would descend to €21,769 if the Croke Park II nursing recruitment scheme was imposed. The INMO also plans to condemn the proposed graduate nursing recruitment scheme at its annual delegates conference opening in Letterkenny today. ● See page 18 for more.
