Little ANGEL: Vakaris Martinaitis.

rate his second birthday on Saturday. The accident has raised questions about the reconfigured ambulance service in east Cork after neighbour Kevin Hennessy, who came to the boy’s aid, said he rang the emergency services and
was told no ambulance was available and that he should bring him to SouthDoc. Mr Hennessy drove with a garda escort to Cork University Hospital after attending SouthDoc. The Health Service Executive has launched an investigation, after confirming that an ambulance was actually
available at the time. Today’s Mass was to take place at the Church Of The Most Holy Rosary in Midleton. Protestors gathered outside the constituency office of Cork East TD David Stanton this morning over an ambulance service they said was ‘not working’.
Bus staff to ‘strike until issue resolved’ CORK Bus Éireann staff picketed outside bus stations at Parnell Place and Capwell from 5.30am today for the second day of strike action and have vowed to stay there as long as it takes. Members of the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) grounded the Bus Éireann fleet for a second day today, leaving more than 70,000 passengers facing travel chaos. School transport services were expected to operate as normal today except for the 2,500 school transport ticket holders - who use public transport services to travel to and from school who could be hit. The industrial action by members of the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) centres on a row over €5m in payroll savings. Workers from SIPTU and the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA), which have also balloted members for industrial

action, have also refused to pass picket lines. Government ministers and opposition parties have called on management and unions to enter crunch talks after 95% of services were axed yesterday. Gerry O’Donovan, chairman of the Cork branch of the NBRU, said staff took no pleasure in people’s plans being disrupted but added that they had been encouraged by public support. “It is unfortunate that this is what we have had to do but people are telling us they understand why. Our colleagues in Dublin Bus and Irish Rail are only bulling to join us. “This is no longer about bus employees, it is also about standing up for nurses and public sector workers who are being hit with unfair measures. We want it sorted once and for all and are prepared to do what it takes,” he added. Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said it must to be resolved.
