VEC school budgets slashed by up to 50%
SCHOOLS and colleges run by County Cork VEC are facing “phenomenal cutsâ€? to their running cost budgets in the academic year ahead. Some of Cork county’s 21 VEC schools could be hit by a cut of more than 50% to non-pay funding as part of a nationwide â‚Ź13.2 million funding cut to the VEC sector, announced by the Department of Education in Budget 2013. The chief executive of Cork County VEC, Ms Joan Russell, said it’s was her job “to keep schools openâ€? and she called on the Government to reverse the cuts which she said “discriminateâ€? against VEC schools.
Chief executive: I’m obliged to carry out orders
By MARIA ROLSTON However she has told committee members that she could not promise that some schools will not be affected by cuts of more than 50% to their budgets for running costs due to the manner in which the cuts had to be administered, if the department’s decision was not overturned. The cuts do not affect teachers’ pay or classes, but will hit funding for services such as heat and lighting and are likely to mean that schools with high cash savings will be affected by higher
funding cuts. Several Cork County VEC committee members have asked the CEO to cap the cuts at 50%, saying that schools with high cash balances will be “penalised for hitherto prudent spending. However Ms Russell said her “hands are tied and she is obliged to carry out the department’s orders. The department has stipulated that the VECs are to provide the same level of service in 2013 as in 2012 and are to use all cash balances brought forward from 2012. See page four for more.
