City’s volunteer heroes saluted at awards night By DEIRDRE O’REILLY
THE city saluted its heroes last night at the 10th Lord Mayor’s Community and Voluntary Awards. Of the 700 unsung voluntary groups in Cork city that were nominated for the annual awards, Cór Fhéile were the overall winners. Founded in 1947, and every year since, up to 3,500 children from 60 schools throughout the city and county perform on the Cór Fhéile stage of the City Hall over a two week period. The Cór Fhéile is organised by a small group of voluntary teachers who give their time freely to the event. Fiona Giles of Cór Fhéile said: “We can’t believe we’ve won. We really are humbled.” Six other community and voluntary awards were presented at the event which is sponsored by the (YHQLQJ (FKR and Express Kitchens and Floors. A further six people received civic awards from the Lord Mayor, Cllr John Buttimer, who said: “Tonight is a night of acknowledgment, a night of recognition, a night of celebration.” ● See pages 12 and 13 for more.
