THERE’S life after cancer — that was the message from five runners who took part in today’s Cork City Marathon. All five have survived the illness in recent years and have since taken part in the marathon, raising cash for charity. John Quigley, Mossie Shanahan, Ned O’Brien, Liam Ryan and Noel O’Connor will complete the marathon in relays. Mossie, a taxi driver from Pouladuff, said he answered a call from John Quigley seeking cancer survivors interested in running together. “We have our ‘Cancer Survivors’ T-shirts and the message we are trying to get across is that there is life after cancer,” he said. “It is 10 years since I recovered from my illness. Some of the lads recovered two or three years ago. We have taken part in a few marathons. This is my fourth time participating and each of us raise money for different charities,” Mossie added. The five runners were among thousands taking part in today’s marathon covering a route through the city centre, and finishing at the Carrigrohane Straight Road. ● Perfect weather for runners: See page three.

Offenders on temporary releases commit further crimes committed to nine months in prison in March for burglary and was granted temporary release less than three months later. She was arrested last Monday and brought before Cork District Court on Tuesday where she was charged with two
counts of burglary. She was released on bail and garda sources said she was arrested again on Tuesday evening after allegedly committing a further two burglaries. She was remanded in custody after being brought back before the
court on Wednesday. Gardaí in Cork have expressed frustration at the temporary release system which is being used to free up overcrowded prisons. Their frustration comes as a study of recidivism by offenders has been
released by the Central Statistics Office and the Irish Prison Service. It reveals that more than 80% of offenders re-offend within a year of being released from prison. The report is based on all ● Continued on page two.
