be not saved and his body was taken from the river at around 2am. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy remained seriously ill in Kerry General Hospital today after getting into difficulties yesterday evening while swimming in the River Blackwater at Knocknagree. He had been swimming with friends in an area of deep water at Lisheen Bridge at 5.30pm when the accident occurred. Friends raised the alarm, and gardaí and two ambulance crews responded. A unit of the fire brigade also went to the scene, along with an Air Corps helicopter. He was airlifted
to Kerry General Hospital. On Saturday, a 26-year-old Lithuanian man drowned while swimming with friends at Ballyquirke lake in Moycullen, Galway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic deaths come just days after the Irish Water Safety organisation issued a warning to people to be alert for hidden dangers while swimming. The group’s spokesman John Leech said knowing the dangers will reduce the chance of water-related accidents and tragedies. “Swimming may give the feeling of warmth but muscles cool quickly in cold water which may impair a person’s ability to swim ashore,” he said.
The proposed Marina Park will be five times the size of Fitzgerald Park. Draft plans for the 32-hectare park will go on display at City Hall tomorrow. ● Pages 10 & 11.
