Carer mum appeals to Government
Please restore my grant
A CORK woman who has cared for her disabled daughter for 50 years is pleading with the Government to reverse cuts to the Carers Respite Grant. Speaking out during National Carers Week, taking place this week, 76-year-old Mary McDonnell has criticised the Government for slashing the Carers Respite Grant from â‚Ź1,700 to â‚Ź1,375 a year, due to come into force this month. Mary, from Douglas, lovingly cares for her daughter, SinĂŠad who has needed full-time care since she was born. She has cerebral palsy, is quadriplegic and has a severe curvature in her spine. She has numerous medical complications and has to take a raft of medications. Mary, who also has two sons, said: “I don’t know from day to day what’s going to happen. It’s has become harder over the years.â€? She has high praise for the frontline

staff who help her and SinĂŠad from day to day but is critical of the amount of red tape carers have to wade through. “I’m very disappointed with the cut in the respite grant. Anything the Government gives they take back when times are tough. I get â‚Ź119 a week. I only have half the carers allowance because I’m on a state pension.â€? However, there was some good news for carers and the disabled today as the Cabinet approved the continuation of a â‚Ź208 monthly mobility allowance and transport grants until at least October. They were due to cease this month after the Ombudsman ruled they were illegal. Ministers have now agreed a new scheme to provide individual payments to people with severe disabilities who require additional income to address the costs of their mobility needs. â—?
