Romanian gang in Cork for crime spree

A ROMANIAN gang based in Tallaght are targeting shops in Cork city in shoplifting sprees.

Meanwhile, businesses in the city are also being targeted by a group of Eastern Europeans who are based here. Both gangs are targeting shops selling high-end clothing, fragrances and electrical equipment for resale on the black market. The Tallaght-based group has been linked to incidents across the country and have

been travelling to Cork over the past fortnight to swoop on shops here. Gardaí and security guards in city centre stores are aware of the gang and two men were recently arrested after being detected in one store. Ian Bell, of Cork City Radio Link, said the gang had been targeting half a dozen shops in the city centre during their

visits here. The radio link was set up in 2009 to ensure that information on shoplifters can be shared as quickly as possible between security personnel and gardaí in the city centre. It allows information to be shared on suspects, as well as allowing retailers targeted by shoplifters to raise the alarm quickly. Meanwhile, the Cork-based Eastern European gang have up to 16 members, but it is believed not all are involved in

the actual theft. Some of the gang are used to keep staff distracted while other members of the gang carry out the thefts. The Cork City Radio Link is operated by more than 40 stores in the city centre, Mahon and Blackpool, all through the Cork Business Association. ● House break-ins in Gurranabraher have risen by 47% in recent months — see page two.

Fireman is hit by bottle

A FIREMAN was taken to hospital after being hit with a bottle while attending a bonfire last night. It happened on Sprigg’s Road as bottles were thrown at fire crews. He was taken to Cork University Hospital but his injury is not serious. Meanwhile, the fire service was also called to a fire at St Kevin’s Hospital on Lee Road.
