Murphy still hasn’t committed to Cork
ALL-STAR corner-back, Brian Murphy has not committed to the Cork hurling squad for the new season and his future, according to selector Kieran Kingston, is uncertain. The Bride Rovers clubman, an All-Ireland medal winner in 2004 and 2005 has not featured in the equation since the All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway last season and the management are hoping that his situation will be cleared up this week. “Brian hasn’t trained with us. He’s on a break at the moment,” said Kingston. “He knows that we want him back. We’d love to have him back and we are hopeful that he will join up with us again. “But it is uncertain at the moment and we’ll know hopefully, over the next week or so.’’ The Cork selector was speaking after Cork’s win over Galway champions St Thomas at CIT yesterday where he paid tribute to Eoin Cadogan who decided over
All-Star corner-back yet to link up with hurlers HURLING By JOHN HORGAN the weekend that he would concentrate on football this season. “We always knew that Eoin was going to at some stage pick either hurling or football. People outside the camps don’t realise the commitment that is required. “Eoin has been the top dual star in the country for a number of years now and it was a very difficult decision for him. We are disappointed that he has picked football, no doubt about that but at the same time we respect his decision and wish him the best. “But we are not closing the door on him, he has committed to football
now for 2013 but we are certainly keeping that door open for him into the future.’’ Cadogan now joins Sean Óg Ó hAilpín, John Gardiner, Damien Cahalane, Darren Sweetnam and Niall McCarthy as absentees from last year’s squad and it would be another substantial blow if Brian Murphy decided not to return. On the question of captaincy of the team, Kingston told the Evening Echo that it has still to be decided. Cork open their competitive season account on Saturday against UCC in the Waterford Crystal Cup at the Mardyke, 12 noon. A number of the Cork squad will be featuring for UCC, Darren McCarthy, William Egan, Killian Murphy, Conor Lehane and Seamus Harnedy.
Bennett dismisses talk of a City return
ALAN BENNETT has poured cold water on speculation linking him with a return to Cork City in the summer, ZULWHV 3$8/ '2//(5<. The Cheltenham Town captain recently reiterated his desire to finish his career at City, with whom he spent six years before joining Reading in 2006. Bennett’s contract at
SOCCER Cheltenham expires at the end of the season, with the League Two promotion chasers currently in the play-off places. “I’m here as long as Cheltenham want to keep me, 100 per cent,” said the 31-year-old defender, who led his side in Monday night’s FA Cup third round
loss to Everton. “When the day comes that they no longer want me I’ll probably end up going home, but I’m in no rush. “I’m here for as long as the gaffer and chairman think I’m doing a good job and want to keep me on, so the ball is in their court.” Bennett started 44 of Cheltenham’s 46 League Two games last term,
helping them to reach the play-off final at Wembley where lost 2-0 against Crewe Alexandra. It’s thought that a factor in any decision Bennett makes regarding his future is whether or not Cheltenham can go a step further this season by securing promotion. ● More soccer on P52-53.
O’Gara is probably going to be cited RUGBY
MUNSTER may have to go into their final crunch game of the Heineken Cup without Ronan O’Gara (below) who is in danger of having to face a citing charge for aiming a petulant kick at Edinburgh’s Sean Cox, writes SEAN McCARTHY. The Munster out-half was substituted shortly afterwards but that may not be enough to get him off the hook with the citing officer. The out-half ’s actions were missed by the match officials but will almost certainly be picked up by the citing commissioner, Italian Alberto Recaldini, who has 50 hours from the start of the match to indicate whether a citing is imminent. Munster got the win they needed in Edinburgh but crucially missed out on the bonus point which leaves their qualification for the quarter-finals in a perilous position and they will be hoping that a disinterested Racing Metro side turn up to Thomond Park next Sunday, 12.30pm. ● See P48 for more.
