Scot says it would have been a dream come true to lead again AFTER missing out on being recalled as Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has given his support to Paul McGinley and offered to help in any way he can. McGinley got the nod at yesterday’s European Tour tournament committee meeting in Abu Dhabi, the Dubliner seeing off Scottish trio Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle, and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez to land the coveted position. But Montgomerie, who led Europe to victory in Wales three years ago and became a late contender for the job after Tom Watson was put in charge of the Americans, said: “I’m not at all disappointed – it would have been a dream come true, but it has not happened.” “I was very flattered even to be considered again – it meant a lot to me. The selection process
GOLF was such that they appointed the best man for the job. “We all get behind Paul now and wish him well. I appointed him for the Seve Trophy and he did a very good job – as he did twice as a vice-captain (in the Ryder Cup). “He’s a very good man-manager and very good at assessing people’s strengths. “I will be there to support and fly the flag for Europe.” Montgomerie lives only a few miles from Gleneagles and is bound to be on the list of possible assistant captains for the match in September next year. Asked if he had any bitterness about the way things
turned out the 49-year-old replied: “Goodness no. It’s nothing to do with that.” As for whether he might ever again be in the running for the job Montgomerie added: “Only if we keep losing and I do a Tom Watson and come back!” Watson is back in the role 20 years on from when he led the United States to their last victory on European soil and will be 65 come the match. No captain on either side has been older than that. Europe have won five of the last six matches and seven of the last nine. ● See P33 for Mark Woods’ verdict on the decision.
City get a home draw for final of U19 cup U19 SOCCER HOLDERS Cork City have been granted home venue for the final of this year’s Enda McGuill U19 Cup, ZULWHV 12(/ 63,//$1(. City who beat Dundalk at Oriel Park last year to clinch a league and FAI Cup double will play Shelbourne at Turner’s Cross towards the end of next month. No date has been confirmed as yet but Wednesday night, March 27 looks a strong possibility. City boss Paul Bowdren says he would have a preference for the game to be played at the Curragh Road venue rather than Bishopstown. “It’s great news for us and I presume, as a national final, the game will be played at Turner’s Cross. “It makes a change for us to be playing in Cork and will give us a slight advantage. The game will be more of an occasion at Turner’s Cross under lights with a better atmosphere and hopefully a bigger gate too,” he added. Shels’ scored a 4-0 win over Wexford Youths at Tolka Park last night to book their place in the final. Matthew Taylor opened the scoring after 17 minutes before Jake Donnelly netted a hat-trick with his third goal coming from the penalty spot.

Colin Montgomerie has given his full support to new Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, despite the Scotsman’s desire that he’d be picked for a second term at the helm of the European team.
The Rock: Young guns must step up THE Cork hurlers need new leaders to step up to the plate to remain competitive according to former All-Star full-back Diarmuid O’Sullivan. In the wake of the loss of Eoin Cadogan and Damien Cahalane to football, Darren Sweetnam to rugby and the exodus of the likes of Seán Óg, John Gardiner and Niall McCarthy, Rebel boss Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s options have diminished. And according to The Rock in an interview on the GAA.ie website, this represents a chance for the next generation to make their mark. “There’s a core group of guys who have been around the squad for four or five years – Paudie (O’Sullivan), Patrick

GAA Horgan, Patrick Cronin and Shane O’Neill – and they are going to have to play big parts now. A lot of pressure will fall on their shoulders. “At this moment in time, Dónal Óg Cusack and Tom Kenny are the only survivors of the older crop. “There is going to be huge pressure on the younger guys and hopefully they have the shoulders to carry it because Cork hurling needs characters, guys with ability and mental strength.” O’Sullivan, who was a Munster medallist with the Cork footballers in 2002, was not surprised by Cadogan’s decision.
“As a person who would have allegiances to Cork hurling it was bitterly disappointing because I think Eoin, over the last 12 months, had started to cement his place at centre-back, which we all know is the most vital position on a hurling field,” O’Sullivan says. “His hurling started to suffer (as a dual player) and he would admit that as well. “To be fair to him I have no doubt if he had picked hurling he would have made a fantastic centre-back for Cork full-time. “That’s going to be hard for Jimmy Barry-Murphy and his management team to take, as it is for Cork hurling people in general. We’re a proud county, proud of both our hurlers and footballers, but we always wanted to keep the best hurlers for the hurling team alone.” ● See more GAA on P50.
Eoin Cadogan is one of a number of Cork players to choose alternative sporting routes to hurling.
