Edel creates history with her double MVP win

SPORT

EDEL THORNTON (16), from Gurranabraher, went into the history books at the National Basketball Arena yesterday as Singleton’s SuperValu Brunell completed the double in the women’s U18 and U20 national cup championships. Thornton, who scored 19 points in her club’s U18 win over Glanmire put on another majestical display as Brunell defeated Killester in the U20 decider yesterday. The 16-year-old was rewarded with her performances by being awarded the MVP in both finals and in doing so became the first player in the history of the championships to achieve this amazing feat. “I am actually embarrassed, because basketball is a team game, but I will accept them

The bad news for Brunell is that Thornton has her sights of taking up a scholarship in the States. “I have dreamt of going to America since I was 12, but we will see how things go in the next few years. “I would like to thank my parents who have always been there for me taking me to games all over the country. “Winning these trophies means as much to them as it does to me,” Edel added. ● See P47-49 for more basketball.

THE Munster GAA Council will decide today on a venue for next weekend’s Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final between Cork and Clare. The game will be played at a Cork or Clare venue but it’s timing is complicated by the fact that Clare boss Davy Fitzgerald is also the team boss of Limerick IT who play Tipperary in the other semi-final. Cork’s unbeaten early season run continued on Saturday when an experimental 15 easily accounted for Waterford IT, who were minus their high profile inter-county personnel. Two big positives for the Cork selectors in the 4-16 to 1-8 victory were the scoring returns from Kilworth’s Adrian Mannix (right) and Jamie Coughlan. Between them they contributed 3-8 from play, Mannix with 2-4, two goals putting the gloss on a return to the red jersey after he was first introduced un-

Na Piarsaigh’s Christopher Joyce put down a further marker in his efforts to secure the centre-back spot while Stephen White strengthened his claims too alongside him. A feature of the game was the introduction in the closing sequences of Harbour Rovers junior player, David Pyne who acquitted himself well. There was more good news too from selector Kieran Kingston who revealed that Brian Murphy will shortly be re-joining the panel after an extended break. “He’s working away with trainer Dave Matthews and I would expect him back in the plans around the first week in February,.’’ Kingston told the Echo. ● See more GAA P50-53.
