Evening Echo Meyler gets boost before Poland game

SPORT

DAVID Meyler did his international chances no harm at all with the winner for Hull City against Millwall, ZULWHV 12(/ 63,//$1(. Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni was at the Den to cast an eye over Hull’s Meyler, SLFWXUHG Robbie Brady and Paul McShane as well as Millwall keeper David Forde. Hull stayed third behind Cardiff and Leicester City in the Championship race. It was Hull’s first league win of 2013 with Meyler on target inside 40 seconds of the kick-off. He made the most of some generous defending from the home side

to calmly bag the winner. Paul McShane recovered from illness to keep his place in the team as Meyler took advantage of a Millwall back-pass to run through on goal and slot past Forde. Meanwhile Bolton’s Keith Andrews took the top gong at the 23rd FAI International Football

Awards in Dublin. Andrews, who is out of Wednesday’s friendly with Poland at the Aviva Stadium, scooped the Senior International Player of the Year while Kevin Doyle’s goal against Kazakhstan during Ireland’s World Cup qualifier last September was voted the ‘Goal of the Year’. Wigan’s James McCarthy won the Young Player of the Year. See P40 for more.

Magnificent Milford are into decider GAA

Simon Zebo in action against Wales during Saturday’s Six Nations game and left, the Irish winger flicks the ball into his hand in the lead up to Cian Healy’s try.

MILFORD are an hour away from All-Ireland camogie glory after a stirring semi-final win over champions Oulart-The-Ballagh in Wexford yesterday. The north Cork girls now meet Killimor of Galway in next month’s decider. Milford built up a 1-10 to 0-0 lead at half-time after playing with the howling wind, Regina Curtin scoring the crucial goal at 14 minutes. Then, it was batten-down-the-hatches time in the second-half as the Wexford girls fought back. But, Milford defended brilliantly to win by 1-12 to 1-7 with Killimor 2-9 to 0-12 winners over O’Donovan Rossa from Belfast in the other semi-final. Meanwhile, Cork and Kerry suffered the same fate on the opening weekend of the football league, both losing by six points on their travels. Dublin easily defeated Cork 1-18 to 2-9 at Croke Park on Saturday night and Mayo romped to 0-15 to 1-6 win over Kerry at McHale Park yesterday, holding the visitors scoreless in the second-half. The pair try to get back to winning ways next weekend, when Cork host Kildare at Påirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night at 7pm and Kerry are at home to the Dubs in Killarney on Sunday. See P49-53 for more.

He’s got legs and he knows how to use them ZINEDINE Zebo has become a YouTube sensation after a sizzling moment of magic in Ireland’s bruising 30-15 victory over Wales in their Six Nations opener on Saturday. Brilliant Munster winger Simon Zebo not only scored the opening try on his Six Nations debut, but more outrageously the 22-year-old back-heeled the ball up into his grasp to tee-up Cian Healy’s 24th-minute try. It was a piece of skill that drew comparisons to French soccer legend Zinedine

RUGBY By ÉAMONN MURPHY Zidane and Barca magician Leo Messi, that was — in some part — down to Zebo’s teenage years spent playing Gaelic football with St Michael’s, hurling with Blackrock and soccer with Avondale United. The former Pres Senior Cup sensation is a natural. Numerous videos have been posted on YouTube since the clash at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

His magnificence was termed “Match of the Day-type stuff by Irish skipper Jamie Heaslip, who forced Zebo to improvise after a slack pass, while it featured on popular US sports website Deadspin. Thankfully for Munster fans, the Cork Con club man signed a three-year deal with the province recently, which should ward off any French clubs pursuing him in the wake of Jonathan Sexton’s impending move to Racing Metro. Zebo’s father Arthur is from Martinique, a French island, while his mother Lynda hails from Leeside. His sister Jessika also has her brother’s speed, and runs with Leevale AC.
