Hurley has honour of leading out club side
TOMORROW night at 7.45pm will be one of the proudest moments of Midleton man Gerry Hurley’s life, ZULWHV 6($1 0F&$57+<. He will lead his countrymen out to face England on his home ground when Ireland Clubs face England Counties at Temple Hill. Cork team set to be named tonight DEFENDER Michael Shields is expected to return to the Cork team to play Kildare in the league at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night (7pm).
The Barrs’ ace missed the defeat by Dublin last week due to a leg injury, but is likely to be named in the team later tonight. Damien Cahalane is considered a doubt after suffering a dead leg. He didn’t train with the U21s on Tuesday night and the management will assess the situation at training tonight. Cahalane is one of three U21s involved with the senior set-up at present, the others are Tom Clancy (Clonakilty) and John O’Rourke. This will be their last involvement with the seniors because of Cork’s opening defence of their Munster U21 title against Kerry on March 13. Cork are likely to show changes at the back with

ERIC GRIMES EHORZ makes a welcome return to Turner’s Cross tonight when he lines out in goal for Leeds United in a pre-season friendly with Cork City, 7.45pm. The former Ringmahon Rangers goalkeeper, who celebrated his 18th birthday on Monday, played for the Leeds U21s in a 2-2 draw at Wigan on Tuesday and he will be back between the sticks this evening. “I went over to Leeds two years ago on an Academy scholarship after Tony O’Neill, the Leeds scout in Kerry, saw me play in an international match. Then Bobby Tambling finally convinced me that it was the right thing to do and I made the move. “It’s been a dream move for me as I am a big Leeds fan anyway. My dad Kieran and older brother Ricky are Leeds fans as well. It’s been brilliant so far and I have no regrets,” said Grimes, who previously had trials with Ipswich Town, QPR and Preston. “I went to Ipswich for a trial on the same day as Roy Keane was sacked. I was at QPR and Neil Warnock was sacked a week later and when I was at Preston, Darren Ferguson was dismissed,” said Eric. Grimes — who has been capped by Ireland at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level and is on stand-by with Paul Doolin’s U19 squad — is hoping to win a contract extension at Elland Road in the coming weeks. “I am looking forward to it and hopefully I will get to start against City,” he said. ● See more soccer on P52-53.
