The former Cork City and Cobh Ramblers midfielder has left Macclesfield Town after just two weeks with the English Conference club. He joined the Silkmen on transfer deadline day but, citing personal reasons, the 27-year-old had his contract cancelled by mutual consent yesterday. “I am aware of Darren’s position and I intend to talk to him,” Dunne, left, said “The problem I have is that the budget is spent for the season and I have no room to manoeuvre, but he’s definitely a player I’d be interested in. “We might be able to do something in

By NOEL SPILLANE the transfer window in July, but it’s really too late in the day for me now with the season starting early next month,” he said. Murphy’s career has been hampered by injuries, with the Carrignavar man restricted to just 15 appearances since 2010 due to setbacks which included a dislocated shoulder, a broken leg and persistent back, hamstring and calf problems. Having joined Port Vale in the summer, he was released by the League Two club last month having previously spent four seasons with Stevenage where he won an FA Trophy medal at Wembley. Meanwhile, Cork travel to Cobh tonight to take on Ramblers in a pre-season friendly (7.45pm). ● More soccer in Cork Sports World.

Hurling bosses to defer selection HURLING

THE Cork hurling management have delayed finalising their panel for the national league which begins with a home game against Tipperary next Saturday week at Páirc Uí Rinn, ZULWHV -2+1 +25*$1 Injuries to a few players, the participation of others in next Tuesday’s big Fitzgibbon Cup game between UCC and Cork IT, and the involvement of six more with Munster in the interprovincial series this weekend, has led to the deferral of the squad announcement. Young Colm Spillane picked up a shoulder injury yesterday in UCC’s easy Fresher’s Cup win over St Patrick’s, and the extent of the damage will be assessed over the weekend. The squad will train tomorrow despite the number of absentees and the selectors will be keeping a close eye on the Mardyke showdown next week between the two colleges. One player who will definitely miss the league opener and subsequent games is Jamie Coughlan who is undergoing an operation for a troublesome hip injury. Cork face an arduous league campaign, just two home games against Tipp and Clare, and three away to Waterford, Galway and Kilkenny in that order. ● More GAA P47-50.
