MUNSTER boss Rob Penney has admitted he had to give his players the ‘blow torch’ treatment following their woeful display in a 34-10 hammering at the hands of Treviso on Sunday. Man United manager Alex Ferguson’s ‘hairdryer treatment’ whenever his side fail to deliver has become legendary, and Penney is hoping to provoke a response from Munster, whose Rabo Direct form has been erratic this season. The Reds squad met at the Firgrove Hotel in Mitchelstown yesterday to comb through the ashes of their latest loss in Italy. “We’ve travelled away twice and haven’t delivered, and that’s where people probably look to the head table and want reassurance and want some direction,” admitted Penney. “That’s my job, like flying a 747, there’s only certain times you get the blow torch on and this is one of them. “It’s a really disappointing thing to have to
RUGBY By SEÁN McCARTHY do. With a six-day turnaround you don’t have time to spend too much energy and effort on what’s gone on in the past because you can’t control it, but we have to do it because we have to learn from it.” Penney reckons that the chastening lessons from Munster’s last two games will stand to them when they face Ospreys on Saturday in their Rabo Direct League game at Thomond Park, 6.15pm. “It’s in times of adversity when often it’s not character building, it’s character revealing. You see the depths people will go to help and nurture each other as opposed to the other side of that. Some people can become negative and poisonous. “Thankfully this group hasn’t gone down that path, they are determined to rectify it and that’s been a pleasing outcome over the past few days.” ● See P45-47 for more.
Cork will have new sponsor by Donegal tie GAA
THE Cork County Board are targeting the football and hurling league double-header on March 16 to unveil a new sponsor and jersey for the 2013 campaign. Cork have been without a sponsor since O2 ended their long-term agreement, and the Mercy Hospital have been given the opportunity to promote their cancer appeal in the interim. That will continue for the footballers’ trip to Down Sunday, while they’re away to Tyrone a week later, when the hurlers are in Waterford. It’s now likely a new deal, believed to be with online insurance firm Chill.ie, will be concluded in time for the next home matches in Páirc Uí Rinn. Cork host All-Ireland champions Donegal at 5pm on March 16, before the hurlers meet Clare at 7pm. Cork GAA are also currently without a sponsor for the club championships, as their most recent deal with the (YHQLQJ (FKR concluded in 2011. Meanwhile, Graham Canty is again expected to feature at midfield for the footballers in Newry on Sunday, 2pm. He started there in the defeat by Kildare and is set to partner Aidan Walsh. Either Noel O’Leary or Paudie Kissane will be at six and Mark Collins is tipped to lead the attack with Barry O’Driscoll also in the frame. Donncha O’Connor didn’t train Tuesday due to a foot injury, but will be named tonight. Daniel Goulding played one half of a training match against the U21s earlier in the week and showed up well. ● See P48-50.
