joke for Ramblers

COBH RAMBLERS will have to reschedule their EA Sports Cup game with Waterford United after last night’s game at the RSC was called off due to snow on the pitch, writes NOEL SPILLANE. “It’s a pity the game was called off,” said Ramblers boss Dave Hill. “It was snowing on-and-off in Waterford all day but the snow didn’t settle and it was only an hour before the kick-off that it really snowed hard

EA SPORTS CUP and stayed on the ground. “But things seemed to improve again and I wonder if we had waited another half an hour or so could we have gone ahead. ● Meanwhile, Cork City have been drawn away to Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of their Setanta Sports Cup semi-final with Drogheda taking on Sligo Rovers in the other semi-final to be played on Tuesday, April 16

“No matter who you get in the last four it’s going to be a hard game. I suppose being away first is a slight advantage but we will have to do well up at Tallaght Stadium and keep the tie alive,” said City boss Tommy Dunne. “If we can keep the tie alive and bring Rovers back to Turner’s Cross then I am sure there will be big interest in our semi-final and we will get a bumper crowd for the return leg,” he added.

Cork legends call time on senior club careers NEWTOWN will be without Ben and Jerry O’Connor and Pat Mulcahy when they face Ballymartle in the opening round of this year’s championship. The Avondhu club’s three most influential players have retired from senior hurling, after giving sterling service to the most successful club in the county over the past 13 years, winning four counties, three Munster titles and an All-Ireland club crown. The O’Connors and Mulcahy were a gigantic part of those wonderfully successful years as well of course as being three major contributors to Cork’s Munster and All-Ireland successes during their time in the red jersey If the former Cork stars don’t change their minds before championship, it’s likely the O’Connor twins

By JOHN HORGAN will play on with the club’s junior team alongside a number of their brothers. Newtown began their RedFM SHL campaign under new manager Ger ‘Sparrow’ O’Loughlin with a one-point loss to Na Piarsaigh last Sunday in wretched conditions in Farranree. They had to field without Cork star Jamie Coughlan, who is recuperating from a hip injury, but Cathal Naughton lined out as he builds up his fitness after injury. He’s back on the training ground with Cork. Meanwhile, new Carrigtwohill signing Shane Fives from Waterford lined out at corner-back against Cork last Sunday and his acquisition is a big boost to the 2012 county champions, who will open their league account next weekend against Bishopstown. ● Meanwhile, Ciarán Sheehan and Donncha O’Connor are injury doubts for Cork’s clash with Donegal next Saturday in Páirc Ui Rinn, 5pm. A shoulder injury forced Sheehan off against Tyrone, and will keep him out for at least four weeks, while Donncha O’Connor picked up an Achilles problem late in that six-point win. He may yet line out this weekend. ● Cork U21 captain Damien Cahalane will line out at midfield tomorrow night in Páirc Ui Rinn, 7.30pm, when the Munster champions host Kerry. John Cleary has a talented squad at his disposal, including seniors Thomas Clancy and John O’Rourke, with a full-forward line of Brian Hurley, Luke Connolly and Dan Mac Eoin. Brian O’Driscoll (Tadhg Mac Cárthaigh), Conor Dorman (Bishopstown) and Alan Cronin (Nemo) are in the full-back line, with the Barrs’ Ian Maguire in midfield alongside Cahalane. There are a clutch of UCC players in Darragh Ó Sé’s Kerry outfit, including Conor Cox, Gavan O’Grady and Mark Reen. CORK (U21 v Kerry): D Hanrahan (Douglas); B O’Driscoll (Tadhg Mac Cárthaigh), C Dorman (Bishopstown), A Cronin (Nemo); TJ Brosnan (Newmarket), T Clancy (Clon), J Wall (Kilbrittain); D Cahalane (Castlehaven), I Maguire (St Finbarr’s); A Cadogan (Douglas), M Sugrue (Bandon), J O’Rourke (Carbery Rangers); B Hurley (Castlehaven), L Connolly (Nemo), D Mac Eoin (Ilen). KERRY: S Murphy; P Kilkenny, D Culhane, F McNamara; P Ó Sé, T Morley, M Mangan; J Walsh, S Keane; J Hickson, M Reen, S O’Callaghan; G O’Grady, C Cox, C Brady.
