Trap gives the nod to Green

LEEDS midfielder Paul Green has been preferred to Wigan’s James McCarthy for the Republic of Ireland’s crucial World Cup qualifier in Sweden. Green, whose presence in the side has not always attracted universal approval of fans and pundits, will partner Stoke’s Glenn Whelan in midfield at Stockholm’s Friends Arena.

SOCCER

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni’s team had otherwise as hinted at in training sessions this week, although the Italian, in naming his line-up, admitted a doubt over Hull winger Robbie Brady. Brady is not injured but Trapattoni wants to make sure he is mentally ready for the Group C encounter before finalising his side.

Millwall goalkeeper David Forde will make his first competitive start while Aston Villa’s Ciarán Clark will partner John O’Shea in central defence. West Brom striker Shane Long was selected alongside captain and Robbie Keane up front. Trapattoni feels 29-year-old Green will offer more balance to his side than the attack-minded McCarthy as he looks to utilise the forward threat of players

such as right-back Seamus Coleman. Trapattoni said: “The situation is – away team, away game. “I wish Coleman to go (forward). When he goes, we need protection. “This result is very important and it is important we play our game. “I saw his (Green’s) last game in England. He played very well.”

Rugby: Munster need to build-up a head of steam before quarter-final: P47

TOMORROW night’s Rabo Direct Pro 12 League game, Musgrave Park 5.45pm, will be the last chance for some Munster fans to see their heroes in the flesh before Munster’s Heineken Cup quarter-final against Harlequins. And what a send off it promises to be against Connacht, with Paul O’Connell returning from injury, Donncha O’Callaghan hurting from being dropped for the final Six Nations game against Italy and Ronan O’Gara with a point to prove. Rob Penney has made just three changes from the side that drew with Ospreys, all those in the back five with O’Connell and O’Callaghan joined by Sean Dougall, who is in the starting line up for the first time since January 9. With the points in the League vital for Munster if they are to make the

By SEÁN McCARTHY Top Four play-offs, and with their big game against Harlequins looming, Penney’s side will want to set down a marker. They will host a Connacht side bidding for their first four in a row of victories in the Celtic League since. Johnny O’Connor is a doubt for the visitors in an otherwise very strong pack that will include Ireland international Mike McCarthy. There are still tickets available for the clash which promises to be a real battle of wills.
